The work I do at Sainsbury's is very physical like stacking shelves. I am lucky because the amount I lift at work is nothing compared with the weight I lift in the gym. I know I have the strength to bear it I am originally from Nigeria. I came here when I was seven. Money was always tight. My parents gave me everything I needed, but there was no money for luxuries. I worked hard at school though and, with the help of professors, I got the best A-level grades in my class Unfortunately, though I had applied for "settled "British residential status the Home Office ‎ waited until I was in sixth form to approve my application. That meant I was not eligible for a student loan. The only way I could afford to go to university was that I got a job that would pay for all my living costs and my parents paid for my tuition fees I don’t have much time to socialize because of my job. Ideally, I’d like to have more time to study so I can excel(do much better than most people) at my course. Yes, I have a lot on my plate, but working hard isnt new for me. Growing up, my parents cultivated in me the importance of working hard for what I want in life.‎ My dream is to get a job in the NHS. But now, I’m just focused on trying to get the best grades I can. Whenever I find life hard, I tell myself this is about my future ‎24. Why does the author work long hours and sometimes overtime every week?‎ A. To pay for his own living expenses B. Which proverb can best summarize the passage?‎ A. Actions speak louder than words B. God help those who help the themselves C. A penny saved is a penny earned D. Where there is life, there is hope C Recently, many e-commerce platforms, including Didi Taxi, Ctrip, Fliggy, JD and Taobao, have been uncovered that they are cheating their frequent customers. Their ways are pretty clever. When there are new users or conservative old users, they will give a quite appealing price to attract them into registering and buying goods. However, their big data is not that friendly to the stable users and frequent visitors. The system always offers them higher price for the same products or service. How does this happen? According to the data analysis, the system knows clearly that although they feel the price is high, they will finally pay the bill. By collecting and analyzing users’ profiles, buying habits and other information, big data recommends the same products to different users with different prices. ‎ Companies also try other ways to make money, making online consumption far more worrying. For example, video websites always offer 120 seconds’ advertisements, which drives people crazy. And even if you pay for the membership to get rid of the ads, you have to “enjoy” 15-second “private” ads. By broadcasting them, companies make huge profits --- second to the membership fees. Also, owning 100Mbps network, you still put up with the slow speed when you are downloading a song. You have no choice but to become a VIP when you seek high quality services. Users seem to be lambs(羊羔) among wolves. Even though they say,” Since you have money, I’ll charge you more”, we can’t do anything about it. ‎ It pains us that we haven’t figured out a way to deal with the problem. The only thing we can do is replacing our iPhones with Android phones if we want to buy a membership card, and applying for new accounts if we want cheaper hotels. Not finding a way to fight back, we can’t do anything but accept them passively. ‎ ‎28. How does big data serve companies according to the text? ‎ ‎ A. By being kind to all users. ‎ ‎ B. By giving a discount to stable users. ‎ ‎ C. By attracting new users by analyzing their shopping habits. ‎ ‎ D. By recommending the same products with higher prices to regular users.‎ ‎29. What do we know from the third paragraph? ‎ ‎ A. Membership can rid you of all the ads. ‎ B. Only by being a VIP can you get a better service. ‎ C. The slow download speed is due to your poor network.‎ D. Advertising income is the biggest income for video websites. ‎ ‎30. What is the author’ attitude towards the chances of finding a way to fight back? ‎ ‎ A. Negative. B. Casual. C. Uncertain. D. Positive. ‎ ‎31. What is the main idea of the text? ‎ ‎ A. The big data provides helpful information to users. ‎ B. We have to accept online consumption as it is. ‎ C. There exist many online consumption traps. ‎ D. Regular customers are richer. ‎ D If you were to travel anywhere in the globe— even to visit remote tribes (部落人) who have little contact with the larger world — would people be able to read your emotions from your facial expressions and would you be able to read theirs? ‎ Charles Darwin argued in The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals that basic facial expressions are universal — suggesting that they are hard-wired within us as the product of natural selection. In other words, you would know if someone looked happy, or sad, etc., wherever you were in the world.‎ Since Darwin's day, researchers have, indeed, traveled to faraway corners of the world to test the "universality theory". Paul Ekman, professor of psychology at UC San Francisco and inspiration for the TV show Lie To Me, reported that even Fore tribesmen of New Guinea could look at photos of people from other cultures and identify what emotions were displaying.‎ Since Ekman's work, other papers have tested the universality theory and occasionally challenged it. Rachael Jack of the University of Glasgow and co-authors used computer graphics to produce facial animations (动画). They then showed these animations to 15 Western Caucasian people far away from countryside and 15 East Asian from modern cities. They were asked to divide the facial expressions into groups.‎ This is what they found: They did get six groups from the Western Caucasians. But the results between emotion groups from the East Asians were complexed. They believe this suggests modern cultural factors have a greater influence than before. ‎ ‎32. Charles Darwin held the view in his book that ______.‎ A. facial expressions are understood by all ‎ B. facial expressions are easy to read ‎ C. man and animals share the same emotions ‎ D. some facial expressions can cause confusion ‎33. According to the third paragraph, Fore tribesmen of New Guinea ______.‎ ‎ A. were confused by the photos ‎ B. read the facial expressions in wrong ways ‎ C. could recognize the basic facial expressions ‎ D. had different facial expressions from city people ‎34. Since Darwin, all papers have tested the “universality theory” and _______. ‎ ‎ A. no authors have agreed B. all authors have found the same results ‎ C. some papers have been lost D. some authors have expressed different ideas ‎ ‎35. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?‎ CP:central point P1-P3: Point 1-Point 3 SP: sub-point C: Conclusion ‎ ‎ ‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Taking a test can be very stressful for any student. Helping students prepare may help to reduce some of their anxiety. Here are some studying strategies to help them cope with test anxiety. ‎ ‎ 36 ‎ When writing note cards, the students are actively reviewing the information. As students review their note cards, they can determine what material they have mastered and what material they need to further review. ‎ Use practice tests.‎ ‎ 37 To help them become comfortable when facing time pressure, try using practice tests. Many teachers will give students old tests for an upcoming test. These materials are useful because they allow students to gain familiarity with the format(格式)of these tests. 38 ‎ The important part of this method is to time your students while they are working on the practice test. 39 With this practice, they can determine if they need to spend less time on difficult questions in order to leave enough time for completing the rest of the test. ‎ Play games.‎ Some students may find sitting still at a desk and reading over their notes boring. These students often don’t use their studying time effectively, because they become distracted by other things. 40 ‎ A. For these students, turning studying into a game may keep their interest in what they are studying.‎ B. Timing your student allows them to get some idea of how long it will take to complete a test.‎ C. Students often become anxious during a test, because the time is limited.‎ D. However, if old tests can’t be provided, students could use practice tests. ‎ E. Anxiety is unavoidable, especially when preparing for major exams.‎ F. Overcome test anxiety.‎ G.
