Are you serious?”‎ That’s a reaction I often get when people hear the tale of my childhood.‎ It’s a story I don’t often share. Growing up in a bad home, I learned to protect myself by not speaking up. I’ve seldom said anything about how badly I was treated and hurt as a child.‎ I don’t talk about how my name was changed at least three times, what it was like to live in my van (箱式货车), or how I’ve struggled with anxiety, depression and wanting to kill myself.‎ But I learnt to start speaking up for myself. I went on to earn two graduate degrees and I will complete my doctorate (博士学位) this year. I’ve also become a widely published author. So, how did I get to where I am today?‎ What’s helped me is surrounding myself with caring, loving people. I’ve learned day-to-day skills through research, trial and error, and with the help of skilled professionals.‎ They’ve taught me how to slow down, to breathe, to be thankful for what I’ve got. They’re the ones who make my goals possible. They have also taught me to turn my past experiences into strength—to make the negatives into positives.‎ My hope is that sharing my story might help others to see what is possible even in the darkest of times and help others to speak out.‎ I don’t think I’m in any way special or unique. I’m a common man, no more deserving than anyone else. But for far too long, I’ve been afraid that others think I’m damaged goods. I’ve worried about how I might be treated differently.‎ Pain and fear teach us to be silent. It’s time for that to change.‎ I don’t know what tomorrow might bring. But one thing I’ve learned is that if we can hold on and find help, if we find ways to get through the day and speak up, we’ll not only survive, but become stronger than before.‎ Our very survival can be an inspiration all on its own. And with love of my friends, I look forward to so much more than completing my education – I look forward to the future.‎ ‎4. Why do people react the way they do after hearing the author’s story?‎ A. Many teenagers reach for their smartphones or tablets at bedtime, but it may be a good idea to switch off before you hit the pillow.‎ According to a study by researchers at Murdoch and Griffith Universities in Australia, using mobile devices late at night could harm teenagers’ sleep and lead to an increased risk of mental health problems.‎ The study was carried out on more than 1,000 Australian high school students aged between 13 and 16. It lasted four years as student participants moved from Year 8 to Year 11.‎ During the study, students were asked what time of the night they received or sent text messages and phone calls, and how well they slept.‎ The results are impressive. When the study started in Year 8, more than 85 percent of the students had a mobile pone and around one-third of these students never used ‎ phones after lights out. In contrast, 93 percent of Year 11 students had a mobile phone and only 22 percent of then had no late night mobile use when the study concluded four years later.‎ As the levels of mobile phone use increased, there was a growth in poor sleep behavior among the students. Meanwhile, mental health problems also increased. Students in Year 8 who were more likely to use phones at night were found to have higher levels of depression (抑郁) and lower self-esteem (自尊心) one year later.‎ Lynette Vernon, lead author of the study, explained that phones affect our sleep patterns because of the unnatural blue light they produce. This light could affect the level of hormones (荷尔蒙) in the body, disrupting (打乱) its balance.‎ ‎“The more you sit in bed and watch TV, play with your tablet, and play with your phone at three o’clock in the morning, the more these things affect the slow waves of your sleep pattern and give your poor quality sleep,” Mark Levi, a Sydney-based sleep doctor said.‎ Based on the findings, the researchers suggested parents should focus on guiding their children’s use of mobile devices.‎ According to Vernon, the solution is not simply to ban teenagers from using their devices, but teach them better ways of using them ‎“Back when they’re aged 7 to 10, you have to be a role model. If you put your phone away at night and it doesn’t go into your bedroom, it becomes normalized in the household and you have a much easier job,” he told The Guardian.‎ ‎8. According to the researchers, ____‎ A. texting and calling in bed in harmful to the body B. most Australian students are addicted to the use of mobile devices C. adults are less influenced by the late use of mobile devices than teenagers D. putting mobile devices away at night benefits our mental health.‎ ‎9. Mobile device use at night could lead to poor sleep because ______‎ A. people become excited and it becomes hard to fall asleep B. the light they give off changes the way our body works C. the waves they produce could disturb the body’s balance D. it increases the risks of depression and lowers self-esteem ‎10. Look around at your fellow passengers on the Tube(地铁)or the bus. They’re of every skin color and dress differently to one another. Listen, and you’ll hear many other languages besides English spoken. Some of these people, no doubt, will be tourists who are in London to see the sights. But others – in fact probably most – will be living their lives there, along with millions of others.‎ Along with white British people, there are Britons from, or with parents and grandparents from, the Caribbean, India, China and most other places. This makes London a fascinating place in which to live. The reason is that when people settle in a place, they don’t just buy a house and live there, but bring aspects of the culture of their “old country” with them.‎ The most visible sign of this is the number of restaurants offering dishes from different parts of the world. In a city in which it’s estimated 250 different languages are spoken, you can expect a similarly wide range of foods to be available. You would expect in one of the world’s leading cities to encounter(遇到) French, Italian, Chinese and Indian eateries. But in London you’ll also find Polish, Patagonian and Palestinian restaurants.‎ However, London’s multiculturalism isn’t just about food. Many types of people are gathered in one space, but the way they live differently shows in that space. They worship(崇拜)differently, for one thing. Alongside the famous old English churches by Nicholas Hawksmoor and Christopher Wren – responsible for one of the capital’s most famous landmark, St Paul’s Cathedral—you’ll find mosques(清真寺), temples and synagogues (犹太教堂).‎ London even speaks its own special kind of English. Language experts created the term “Multicultural London English” to identify the dialect of English that appeared at the end of the last century.‎ All of this makes London a very surprising and varied place to call your home. But, in a way, this has long been true. In the 18th century, the compiler(编纂者) of the first English dictionary, Samuel Johnson, once said: “ He who is tired of London is tired of life.”‎ ‎12. By describing the situation on the Tube and bus, the author intends to _____‎ A. show that London is a multicultural city B. explain why London appeals to tourists C. prove that London is a great place to live in D. inform us of how the population of Britain is made up ‎13.
