B Many facts suggest that children are now overweight and the situation is getting worse according to the doctors, for which I feel there are a number of reasons. Some people blame (责怪) the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less fat-giving food. There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives. There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime (消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports. The above are the main reasons from this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits. 24. According to the text, what kind of children may eat more unhealthy food? A. Those who often take exercise. B. Those who often watch television. C. Those who often have meals at home. D. Those who often walk to school. 25. The author thinks that children are becoming overweight mainly because __________ . A. their parents often cook meals for them B. they are too busy to go out and play C. they can’t choose what to eat D. there’re too many fast food shops around 26. The underlined word “steering” in the last sentence most probably means __________ . A. forcing B. guiding C. driving D. moving 27. The main purpose of this passage is to ___________ . A. tell a story B. provide facts C. give advice D.compare opinions C On her first morning in America last summer, my daughter went out to explore her new neighborhood alone, without even telling my wife or me. Of course we were worried; we had just moved from Berlin, and she was just 8. But when she came home, we realized we had no reason to panic. Beaming with pride, she told us how she had discovered the little park around the corner, and had made friends with a few local dog owners. When this story comes up in conversations with American friends, we usually meet with polite disbelief. Most are horrified by the idea that their children might roam(闲逛) around without adult supervision(监管). A study by the University of California has found that American kids spend 90 percent of their free time at home, often in front of the TV or playing video games. Such narrowing of children's world has happened across the developed world. But German parents are generally much more accepting of letting children take some risks. “We are depriving(剥夺) them of opportunities to learn how to take control of their own lives,” writes Peter Gray, a research professor at Boston College. He argues that this increases the chance that they will suffer from anxiety, depression, and various other mental disorders, which have gone up dramatically in recent decades(十年). I am no psychologist like Professor Gray, but I know I won't be around forever to protect my girls from the challenges life holds in store for them. And by giving kids more control over their lives, they learn to have more confidence in their own abilities. 28. Hearing the author's daughter exploring the new neighborhood alone, his American friends feel________. A. worried B. proud C. doubtful D. terrified 29. We can conclude from Paragraph 3 that ________. A. American kids enjoy playing at home B. German parents are less protective than American parents C. German kids like taking risks more than American kids D. American parents don't limit their children's activities in their leisure time 30. It's implied from Professor Gray's words that ________. A. parents should always be around their children to protect them from risks B. more and more parents suffer from mental problems C. children are having more opportunities to take control of their lives D. giving children more freedom is beneficial to their mental development 31. Which of the following words can best describe the author's parenting? A. Open-minded. B. Irresponsible. C. Careless. D. Protective. D I live on the West Coast of British Columbia with my husband and three children. Our day started like any other day. My husband left for work in the north of the town, which is an hour and a half’s drive. The younger children caught their bus to school ten minutes away. Our oldest attends high school and is a 40-minute drive away. I work at home in the office, working on the computer. It was November 2006 and the news had reported gusty winds. When the winds started to get strong I shut the computer down and tried to phone my husband. I left a message telling him the winds were blowing at 80 to 90 km/hr. As I hung up the phone, I heard a tree crack. I went outside and stood in the driveway. Another tree exploded and my heart was racing. When the school bus carrying the youngsters arrived, I ran to get them. No sooner had we made it to the house than another tree exploded. The children were clearly scared, so I loaded them up into the car and we parked in the middle of the yard, where no trees could land on us, it was starting to get dark. My oldest son didn’t come home on the bus and my husband was stranded at work. I called the high school and reached my son. He said he was stranded and didn’t know what to do. I called a friend in town for help. He managed to get my son home to me. Finally, my husband managed to get home. We had been prepared for such events, as we had a generator, candles, a wood stove, fresh water, batteries and two freezers full of food. We were without power for five days. But we didn’t panic―we had all the emergency equipment we needed. Thankfully, none of our neighbours were injured, but the damage was extensive. We are witnessing climate change. We need to be prepared. 32. When did the mother hear a tree crack for the third time? A. When she was on the phone. B. After she hung up the phone. C. Right before she and her kids went into the house. D. Right after she and her kids got into the house. 33. Why did the mother park the car in the middle of the yard? A. It was dark inside the house. B. It was safer there than in the house. C. She wanted to wait for her family there. D. She wanted to receive help from others. 34. What does the underlined phrase “stranded at work” probably mean? A. Busy completing his work. B. Under the pressure of work. C. Stuck at the workplace. D. Worried while working. 35. Why didn’t the family feel anxious when there was a power failure? A. Everyone made it home. B. They encouraged each other. C. The power would very soon be restored. D. They had got all the necessities for emergency. 第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 When we eat meals quickly, we miss the feeling of satiety(满足)and we continue eating long before we realize we’re full.
