That's the question scientists will be asking in Lima next month, when a selection of potatoes will begin undergoing tests to determine whether they are fit to grow on Mars. NASA, the US space agency, is conducting the pioneering experiment together with Lima's International Potato Center. They will cultivate a hundred selected varieties in Marslike conditions that could eventually pave the way for building a dome on the Red Planet for farming the vegetable. Of the selected candidates,40 are native to the Andes Mountains, conditioned to grow in different ecological zones, can stand sudden climate changes and reproduce in rocky areas. The other 60 are improved varieties, able to survive with little water and salt. They are also immune to viruses. Those that pass the tests must meet a final criterion—they must be able not only to grow well on Mars but also reproduce in large quantities. “We're almost 100 percent certain that many of the selected potatoes will pass the tests,” said Julio Valdivia Silva, a Peruvian NASA astrobiologist (太空生物学家)who is taking part in the ambitious project. The scientists plan to transport 100 kilos of soil to a lab in Lima that will simulate the complex Martian atmosphere—which contains mostly carbon dioxide—and expose it to extreme ultraviolet(紫外线的) radiation. If the varieties selected for next month's experiment don't adapt to the desert soil, the researchers will introduce nutrients, which will be provided by radiation. In future years, NASA plans to build a Mars research center in the Peruvian desert. It would create a perfect copy of the Martian landscape and atmosphere for future research into space farming that could serve manned missions to Mars and other planets in the solar system. Others refer to it as a living or openair museum. Built in Brazil to honor Columbus' first voyage to the New World, the Nina, a Columbusera replica (复制品) ship, provides visitors with an accurate visual of the size and sailing equipment of Columbus' favorite ship from over 500 years ago. I joined the crew of the Nina in Gulf Shores, Alabama, in February 2013. As part of a research project sponsored by my university, my goal was to document my days aboard the ship in a blog. I quickly realized that I gained the most valuable insights when I observed or gave tours to schoolage children. The fieldtrip tour of the Nina is handson learning at its best.In this setting, students could touch the line, pass around a ballast stone (压舱石), and move the extremely large tiller that controlled the direction of the ships in Columbus' days. They soon came to understand the labor involved in sailing the ship back in his time.I was pleased to see the students become active participants in their learning process. The Nina is not the only traveling museum that provides such field trips. A visit to Jamestown Settlement, for example, allows visitors to board three recreations of the ships that brought the first settlers from England to Virginia in the early 1600s.Historical guides, dressed in period costumes, give tours of the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. These guides often portray a character that would have lived and worked during that time period. Students touring these ships are encouraged to interact with the guides in order to better understand the daily life in the past. My experience on the Nina helps testify (证实) my longheld belief that students stay interested, ask better questions, and engage(参与)in higherorder thinking tasks when they are actively engaged in the learning process. The students who boarded the Nina came as passive learners. They left as bold explorers. [语篇解读] 本文介绍了哥伦布航海时的航船的复制品Nina,它是一个开放的博物馆。学生参观这一特殊的博物馆可以积极主动参与学习。 5.What occupation is the author engaged in? A.Shipping. B.Education. C.Ecological tourism. I spent three busy days in the capital of Italy, seeing lots of tourist attractions and walking down streets lit by Christmas decorations. There were a lot of things I love about the city. Rome is one of the most ancient cities in the world and is full of wonderful relics (遗迹)from its distant past. These monuments include the Roman Forum and the vast Coliseum where gladiators used to fight each other until death and hunt animals coming from another country. The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating. You can't quite believe how old they are. I studied the masterpieces of the Renaissance period at university and was very excited to see them in real life. I walked around the museum in Vatican City and saw plenty of famous sculptures(雕塑). The best part of the visit was, without doubt, the Sistine Chapel Ceiling, painted in the early 16th century by Michelangelo. It was so breathtaking that I couldn't tear my eyes away from it. In Rome, there is a lot of food on offer for tourists but some of it isn't of very good quality. I made an effort to find reliable restaurants to taste the popular meals of the region, like pasta with tomato, onion and bacon. I also loved eating ice cream and hot chocolate under the Christmas lights. Rome has not only lots of luxury boutiques (精品店) but also plenty of shops that were more in my price range! It was a perfect opportunity to go and buy presents for my family and friends. There was also a Christmas market, where I bought a sparkly decoration for the tree. Working experience or an advanced degree?Well, I believe diverse people have different answers. 1 Here are some reasons: Above all, most of jobs don't require such a high degree, which means just some work, such as theoretical physics, archaeology, or literature, needs high academic qualification. 2 For example, when you are offering a department manager post, and there is a man who has already been a manager for three years but only has a master's degree and an inexperienced person with a doctor's degree, which one would you choose? Definitely the first one for the manager who doesn't acquire a doctor's degree but has rich working experience. 3 For instance, Bill Gates, who was the richest man in the world and one of the most successful merchants. What a wise choice when he decided to abandon studying so that he could gain more working experience instead of a doctor's degree!Or Steve Paul Jobs, who discontinued his study at the age of nineteen in order to become a member of a computer company just like Bill Gates. 4 5 Maybe you shouldn't have to gain an advanced or high degree, but that doesn't mean nothing. Probably a bachelor's degree is still necessary in this fiercely competitive society. All in all, I think rich working experience is much more important than an advanced degree. A.However, a degree is still required for most people. B.Meanwhile, rich working experience will draw more attention. C.Secondly, plenty of experience will bring you success much earlier. D.In my view, either working experience or an advanced degree counts. E.As for me, I will say working experience without hesitation. F.As a matter of fact, more people with rich working experience become successful. G.From all of these, we can see that an advanced degree isn't so necessary as working experience.
