They told the stories of planes and ships that disappeared for no understandable reason and were never found again. They told about ships which were found undamaged but with no one on them. According to the books, more than 1,000 people disappeared in the Triangle from 1945 to 1975. According to some writers, there were no natural explanations for many of the disappearances, so they suggested other explanations. For example, some strange and terrible power exists in the Triangle. According to another writer, people from space are living at the bottom of the Atlantic, and sometimes they need human sailors and airmen for their research. These ideas were not scientific, but they were good advertisements. The books about the Bermuda Triangle were immediate successes. However, the books give little evidence to support their unusual ideas. In addition, they ignore at least three important facts that suggest natural reasons for many of the occurrences. First, messages from some of the ships and aircraft which later disappeared give us evidence of problems with navigational instruments. Similar stories are told by officers who were on duty on planes and ships which finally managed to come through the Triangle without disaster. Second, the weather in this part of the Atlantic Ocean is very unpredictable. Dangerous storms that can cause problems even for experienced pilots and sailors can begin suddenly and without warning. Finally, the Bermuda Triangle is very large, and many people, both experienced and inexperienced, sail and fly through it. Perhaps the figure of 1,000 deaths in thirty years shocks some people, but, in fact, the figure is not unusual for an area of the ocean that is so large and that is crossed by so many ships. The evidence which exists, therefore, supports one conclusion about Bermuda Triangle: we do not need stories about people from space or strange unnatural powers to explain the disappearances. 21. What was strange about the occurrences in the Bermuda according to Paragraph 1? A.Ships survived but with no passengers on board. B.Not only ships but planes went missing as well. C.There were as many as 1,000 deaths from 1945 to 1975. D.They happened across none other than the Atlantic waters. 22. Why were the books about Bermuda Triangle unscientific? A.The books were written by unknown writers. B.Nearly no supporting evidence was given. C.The books were written as advertisements. D.The writers pursued immediate success. 23. What reason for the disappearances may the author agree with? A.The sailors and airmen were taken away by strange species. B.People aboard could not stand the weather and died of diseases. C.The sailors and airmen were to blame as they were inexperienced. D.Navigational instruments going wrong caused the sink or the crash. 24. What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Bermuda Triangle disappearances, mystery or misreading? B.The deadly problems with machines of last century C.One hundred lives lost in thirty years! D.New discoveries in the Bermuda Triangle B 词数:323 主题:生物演变 文体:说明文 The Island Rule is one of the best explanations scientists could give to the observable phenomenon that animals and humans have evolved(演变) depending on the resources available in their habitats(栖息地). Through time, scientists have noticed through fossil(化石) records that some large animals from mainland habitats have dwarf (矮小的) versions in bland habitats. A report from BBC described the existence of what scientists call “hobbit island” off a small island somewhere in Indonesia. It was given such a name because fossil records of tiny, humanlike creatures have been found in the region. What they called as “hobbits” or “Homo floresiensis”, are only as tall as one metre and are small versions of early human species with tinier brains. Though scientists cannot perfectly trace the origin of the “Homo floresiensis”, they believe that they are human relatives, but it is the “island life” that has caused them to evolve as they have. Scientists have noticed through fossil records and existing organisms (有机体) today that it seems if large animals grow small in islands while small animals grow large in larger islands. In theory, animal and human bodies have adjusted to the available food and fresh water in their habitats. Since there is no opportunity for them to leave their island, they might as well adapt. New York magazine explained that islands usually have fewer predators(捕食者) than mainland ecosystems. However, it is the lack of resources that causes the death of many animals. As a means of natural adaptation, the bodies of these animals have evolved smaller than their ancestors, making their bodies require fewer resources. A report from WebEcoist listed down a few examples of animals that have shrunk significantly compared with their ancestors. Some of these include the Bali tiger as small as leopards(豹). 25. How did the name “hobbit island” come from? A.Scientists discovered dwarf people living on the island. B.One metre tall human being made a living on these islands. C.Scientists found human species with tinier brains on an island. D.Evidence showing tiny, human-like creatures on the island was found. 26. What do you know about “Homo floresiensis”? A.They used to only live somewhere in Indonesia. B.They were the earliest ancestor of human beings. C.They look small compared with normal humans. D.They gradually grew larger on the larger islands. 27. According to New York magazine, . A.animals on island lack enough food to live on B.many animals died off for no apparent reason C.too many predators will do damage to the ecosystem D.predators make island animals turn smaller 28. What can be inferred from the text? A.More predators can help animals grow stronger and larger. B.Bali tigers turn small because of adaptation to the environment. C.More food resources should be provided to islands. D.Animals on mainland are fiercer than those on islands. Ⅵ.语法填空 Happiness is for everyone.
