Thirty years later and now a U. S. Geological Survey research geologist, Thieler, is combining science and smartphone technology to help study an endangered bird, the Atlantic coast piping plover.‎ The piping plover is a shorebird that breeds (繁殖) along the Atlantic coast, the Great Lakes and the Great Plains. Rising sea level associated with climate change, as well as increased development in their beach habitats (栖息地), threatens the species. To help track changes in piping plover habitats, Thieler developed a free app called iPlover in 2012. This is a marked change from the typical way scientists collect data, which involves gathering information by using specialized equipment or writing in notebooks and then putting it into spreadsheets.‎ Since releasing iPlover, scientists have gathered data across 1,500 km of breeding range. That equals about a third of the distance across the U. S., which is a large area to cover for only two thousand breeding pairs of piping plovers on the east coast. Instead of having to travel and spend days at each site, a number of cooperators in the field use the app to collect and send data, allowing scientists to gather data more efficiently. It also allows them to collect data at the same time during each breeding season, providing a better picture of changes that happen over longer periods of time. And fast, centralized access means scientists can look at data quickly to get a realtime idea of where and how piping plovers are using their habitats.‎ While iPlover is used by trained field staff, other apps like the U. S. Geological Survey's webbased “iCoast — Did the Coast Change?” invite citizen scientists to identify coastal changes by comparing bird'seyeview photographs taken before and after storms. All the information scientists and citizen scientists alike collect helps federal and state agencies create policy plans for addressing climate change impacts worldwide.‎ 语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了美国的地质学家将科学和智能手机技术结合起来,研制出一款app监测笛鸻栖息地的变化,从而帮助保护这种濒危动物。‎ ‎4.What can we know about the piping plover?‎ A.Its behaviour is changing.‎ B.Its habitat is growing bigger.‎ C.Its living environment is becoming worse.‎ D.Its breeding is limited to the Atlantic coast.‎ 解析:选C 推理判断题。 C。‎ ‎5.Why did Thieler develop iPlover?‎ A.To study shorelines across America.‎ B.To advance information technology.‎ C.To find out global climate change.‎ D.To monitor changes of piping plover habitats.‎ 解析:选D 细节理解题。 D。‎ ‎6.Which of the following benefits the piping plover?‎ A.The camping equipment.‎ B.Research on smartphones.‎ C.The changeable coast.‎ D.Progress in technology.‎ 解析:选D 推理判断题。 D。‎ ‎7.What would be the best title of the text?‎ A.Protecting Endangered Shorebirds B.Rob Thieler, a Creative Scientist C.iPlover, a Tool for Training Field Staff D.Differences Between iPlover and iCoast 解析:选A 标题归纳题。 ‎ C ‎(2019·陕西质检一)It's easy to keep your aging brain as quick as it was in college. Use a website full of brain games or download the right apps, and within 20 minutes you'll be doing your part to sharpen your memory and slow the decline of your mental functions. At least that's what the companies behind this booming industry would have you believe. But is it true?‎ Concrete proof about the benefits of brain games is hard to come by, experts say, when it comes to measurably improving aspects of mental fitness, like having a good memory. “People would really love to believe they could do something like this and make their brain better, but there's just no solid evidence,” says Randall W. Engle, a primary investigator at the Attention & Working Memory Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology.‎ That's not to say brain games are without benefits. Experts say these kinds of mental exercises can change your brain. The brain changes with just about everything you do, including mental training exercises. But numerous studies have shown that brain games lack what researchers call “transfer”. In other words, repeating a game over and over again teaches you how to play the game and get better at it but your brain aging won't necessarily come to a stop.‎ ‎“It's like, you walk through fresh snow, and you leave a trace. If you walk the same route again, the trace gets deeper and deeper,” says Ursula Staudinger, director of the Butler Columbia Aging Center at Columbia University. The fact that structural changes occur does not imply that in general this brain has become more capable. It has become more capable of doing exactly the tasks it was practicing.‎ 语篇解读:本文是一篇科普说明文。 ‎ ‎8.We can infer from the first paragraph that ________.‎ A.brain games improve the memory B.brain aging actually can be quitted C.people don't believe brain games D.the author doubts the effect of brain games 解析:选D 推理判断题。 ‎ ‎9.What does Engle think of the functions of brain games?‎ A.They really make some difference.‎ B.Their effects still need proving.‎ C.People like to be led by the nose.‎ D.People don't believe the effects.‎ 解析:选B 细节理解题。 ‎ ‎10.The underlined word in Paragraph 3 most probably means “________”.‎ A.stopping the brain aging B.having the brain working C.making the brain more passive D.speeding up the brain aging 解析:选A 词义猜测题。 ‎ ‎11.Which can be the best title of the passage?‎ A.Games Stop Brain Aging B.Unavoidable Brain Aging C.Games' Roles Need Proving D.Games Improve Your Brain 解析:选C 标题归纳题。 ‎ D ‎(2019·济南模拟)Children of all ages gathered in New York City recently for the American International Toy Fair. Hidden among already popular toys were new, hightech educational products. Toymakers are working to create these products for improving a child's emotional intelligence.‎ Companies showed off their products last week at New York's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.‎ PleIQ is a set of plastic toy blocks. It uses visual reality technology to teach words, numbers and other things. Edison Durán directs the company that makes PleIQ. He showed people at the Toy Fair how virtual images appear on the blocks when they are held in front of a tablet camera. PleIQ has children act as teacher or guide to a companion character.‎ On the other side of the convention center, Karen Hu from another company demonstrated an educational robot called Woobo. The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touch screen face to get them started. Hu described how the robot can help a child who has autism (自闭症). “The child can communicate with Woobo ... telling him about certain things.”‎ At the EQtainment stand, sales director Jonathan Erickson explained the company's toys. ‎ ‎“The purpose of all of our products is to develop emotional and social intelligence,” he said. Erickson showed off a board game called “Q's Race to the Top”. He said the game got his 4yearold daughter to open up. “The biggest thing is her talking. And that's the key of all this — getting her feelings expressed out. Like, ‘Hey, what does it feel like to be sad?’ or ‘What does it feel like to be happy?’ ”‎ It remains to be seen whether a game or toy can improve emotional intelligence. But toymakers are doing what they can to help parents in their efforts to raise wellrounded children.‎ 语篇解读:本文主要介绍了可帮助提高孩子们情商的新玩具。‎ ‎12.How does PleIQ instruct children to learn?‎ A.By playing the role of a companion.‎ B.By giving direct guidance.‎ C.By taking photos with a camera.‎ D.By presenting visual images.‎ 解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“It uses visual reality technology to teach words, numbers and other things”可知,PleIQ是通过虚拟现实技术教孩子学习的;根据该段中的“He showed ... a tablet camera”可知,这种虚拟现实技术能够展示视觉影像来教孩子,故选D项。‎ ‎13.What can be inferred about Woobo from Paragraph 4?‎ A.It is programmed to replace teachers.‎ B.It may be good company for kids.‎ C.It can get started automatically.‎ D.It is intended to design games.‎ 解析:选B 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“The child can communicate with Woobo ... telling him about certain things”可知,孩子可以和Woobo交流并遵循Woobo给的指示,因为孩子把Woobo当成伙伴而不是告诉他做特定事情的家长或其他人,因此可以推断Woobo可以很好地陪伴孩子,故选B项。‎ ‎14.What does Jonathan Erickson think of his toys?‎ A.They are quite easy to operate.‎ B.They can teach children numbers.‎ C.They help kids express themselves.‎ D.They can show their emotions clearly.‎ 解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第五段中的“The biggest thing is her talking. And that's the key of all this — getting her feelings expressed out”可知,Jonathan Erickson认为他的玩具能够让孩子表达自己的感情,故选C项。‎ ‎15.What is the best title of the text?‎ A.Toys help to build emotional intelligence B.Educational toys sell well in the Toy Fair C.Toymakers are making profits in education D.Children celebrate the Toy Fair 解析:选A 标题归纳题。根据第一段中的“Hidden among already popular toys were new, hightech educational products.
