B When Allen invited me to go on a camping trip to the mountains, I imagined a wooden cabin overlooking a lake, with a warm fireplace, hot chocolate, and soft beds. But my happy image became a nightmare when Allen and his older brother, Leo, showed up with a truck filled with camping equipment—tents, sleeping bags, and water bottles. We were going on survival training! Leo was keen to leave the city behind us and urged us to hurry. Several hours later, as we drove through the forest, the mountains seemed bigger than I remembered; the trees were larger, and the environment felt more threatening. At the trailhead, Leo tied a sleeping bag onto my already heavy pack and lectured Allen and me about hiking rules. Then, with Leo in front we set off along the narrow and steep dirt track that wound up the mountains. After 6 hours of climbing, we finally reached the top. My legs were aching and I dropped my pack and groaned but there was no time to rest. “We need to set up camp quickly,” said Leo. “There are dark clouds coming in. A storm’s on its way.” I thought he was kidding, but Leo was quite serious. He and Allen worked expertly, while I stood around and pretended to help, thunder rumbling (发出隆隆声) in the distance. We just finished putting up the tents when it hit. The wind, thunder, and lightning were relentless (持续强烈的). Leo, sensing that I was scared, started telling us some stories about his camping adventures. But each time lightning lit up the tent and the thunder echoed, I jumped. “Don’t worry. Summer storms pass quickly,” Leo said, trying to comfort me. “And at least the rain will keep the bears away,” he said with a teasing smile, which was less comforting. And just as quickly as the storm came rushing in, it passed, and we exited the tent. The view was incredible—I could see for miles. As darkness set in, I stared in wonder at the millions of stars glowing in the night sky. I wouldn’t lie—I was still wishing for a hot shower and a soft bed, but as I gazed upward at the Milky Way, I knew this was an adventure I would never forget. 4.Why did the author think his happy image became a nightmare? A. Allen had arrived earlier than arranged. B. He saw that Allen was not well prepared. C. He realized their trip would be challenging. D. Allen’s brother was unexpectedly with him. 5.Why was it necessary to set up camp immediately after reaching the mountain top? A. It was almost night time. B. The weather was changing. C. He had known the author for a long time. D. He had not been to this mountain before. 7.How did the author feel at the end of the story? A. Tired. B. Optimistic. C. Scared. D. Disappointed. C The TV series, The Longest Day in Chang’an, which was shown on Chinese online platforms last summer became a hit soon. Since then, it has been shown on partnering streaming platforms and TV networks abroad. Some websites overseas also offered the program to their users paying for it—the first time a Chinese series was broadcast as paid content abroad. “I was amazed by the overseas audience’s love for this show,” Cao Dun, director of The Longest Day in Chang’an, told Beijing Review. “I was worried that they wouldn’t understand the complex political structure of the Tang Dynasty. But in reality, the show is prompting foreign audiences to research Tang Dynasty’s history to better understand the plot.” The unique culture in ancient China is not a barrier but a bridge to connect with foreign audiences. In the TV series, every figure is given enough space to flesh out his or her character. Telling stories of ordinary Chinese people that resonate (引起共鸣) with the audience might be the way to communicate with the world. “The success of the TV series shows that beauty is a universal language crossing borders,” he told Beijing Review. His ambition is to distinguish Chinese dramas from the TV shows in the rest of the world. “The TV series is a step in my plan to tell Chinese stories to the world,” Cao said. “After describing the impressive beauty of the Tang Dynasty, I am looking for several plays that tell stories of today’s China. I don’t want to copy any country’s production. Chinese dramas have to be built on our rich culture and Chinese people’s everyday life,” Cao added. 8.What do we know about the TV series? A. It was first put on overseas. B. It can be appreciated for free. C. It was very popular once it was shown. D. It is about the development of the Tang Dynasty. 9.What does the underlined word “prompting” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Requiring. B. Reminding. C. Informing. D. Encouraging. 10.What made the TV series a success? A. Recognition of beauty. B. Stories of ordinary people. C. Diversity of Chinese culture. D. Personalities of every figure. 11.What is Cao Dun’s ambition? A. To make a successful TV series. B. To tell Chinese stories to the world. C. To show China’s different nationalities. D. To learn the ancient political structure. D Last week, Vodafone started a test of the UK’s first full 5G service, available for use by businesses in Salford. It is part of its plan to trial the technology in seven UK cities. But what can we expect from the next generation of mobile technology? One thing we will see in the preparation for the test is lots of tricks with the new tech. Earlier this year, operators paid almost £1.4 billion for the 5G wavelengths, and to compensate for that cash, they will need to catch the eye of consumers. In September, Vodafone used its bit of the range to display the UK’s first hologram (全息) call. The Manchester City captain Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram in Newbury. It isn’t all holograms, however: 5G will offer faster internet access. with Ofcom (英国通讯管理局) suggesting that video that takes a minute to download on 4G will be available in just a second. The wider application is to support connected equipment on the “internet of things” -not just the internet-enabled fridge that can reorder your milk for you, but the network that will enable driverless cars and delivery drones (无人机) to communicate with each other. Prof William Webb has warned that the technology could be a case of the emperor’s new clothes. Much of the speed increase, he claims, could have been achieved by putting more money in the 4G network, rather than a new technology. Other different voices have suggested that a focus on rolling out wider rural broadband access and addressing current network coverage would be more beneficial to the UK as a whole. Obviously, 5G will also bring a cost to consumers. It requires a handset for both 5G and 4G, and the first 5G-enabled smart phones are expected in the coming year. With the slow pace of network rollout so far, it is likely that consumers will end up upgrading to a new 5G phone well before 5G becomes widely available in the next couple of years. 12. Why does Prof William Webb say “the technology could be a case of the emperor’s new clothes”? A. He is in favor of the application of the new technology. B. 5G will bring a cost to consumers in their daily life. C. 5G helps people communicate better with each other. D. He prefers more money to be spent on 4G networks. 13. The underlined word “addressing” in the fourth paragraph has the closest meaning to . A. making a speech to B. trying to solve C. managing to decrease D. responding to 14. The last paragraph indicates that . A. it’ll take several years to make 5G accessible to the public in the UK B. 5G service shows huge development potential and a broad market C. customers are eager to use 5G smart phones instead of 4G ones D. it’s probable that 5G network rollout is speeding up in Britain 15. What do we know about the text? A. Vodafone is successful in spreading the 5G service. B. Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram by 4G . C. The application of 5G will make life much easier. D. 5G phones are available in rural areas of the UK. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Easy Ways to Give Yourself a Fresh Start It doesn’t need to be complicated or challenging to turn a fresh page on each new day. Whenever we mark a new year—by turning the calendar, returning to school or celebrating a holiday—we are looking for a fresh start. 16 But how? Here are some easy ways to connect with that feeling of starting fresh, whether it’s a new year or simply a new day in our life. 17 This means you have realized what serves your life now and what can stay in your past. Or invest in a new pen and a new notebook. Having fresh supplies can simulate even the common task of creating your to-do list. Moreover, you can learn something new by opening a book you’ve been expecting to read, searching a question that’s been in your mind, enrolling in a class that motivates your interest. Of course you can simply ask a friend for a fresh idea about an issue. 18 Take a break from technology for an hour, a day, or a week. 19 You should be able to put some space between yourself and digital devices. One reason why we sometimes struggle to start fresh is that you get stuck with reflecting on worrisome thoughts about the past, the present or even the future. 20 Allow these thoughts into your day only at a brief (30 minutes or less), specific time. The rest of the time, focus on what you are doing that’s new and positive. How do you give yourself that “fresh start” feeling? A. Electronic products might not be serving you best. B. Newness or freshness can guide us on a positive path. C. Limit your daily “worry time” and make an appointment with yourself. D. All of us enjoy newness, but what is it that leads to a sense of freshness? E. Realizing your past mistakes, you should move forward with enthusiasm. F. Increasing your knowledge on any topic means taking your mind into a fresh area. G. First, even letting go of a single box or bag of items can give you a refreshing sense. 第二部分 英语运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节:完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 When I entered Berkeley, I hoped to earn a scholarship. I heard a laugh, too, and a bang from something being dropped. Our house was noisier since my new stepsister and step-mother moved in—Jen and Mom. I called her Mom, but the word felt uncomfortable, like a pair of shoes that pinched( 夹 脚 ). I didn’t remember my own mother; she had died in an accident when I was a baby. It had always been just Dad and me. We were a team. Now, so much had changed, and sometimes I wished I had the magic to change it back. I heard Dad’s footsteps upstairs. “Do you want to take Jen skating?” he asked. “I guess.” I sighed, thinking about how Dad and I usually spent Thanksgiving Day building a big snowman. But this year, Dad was too busy helping Mom cook the turkey. “Thanks,” Dad said and put his arm around my shoulders. “We’ll make that snowman later,” he promised. “Yeah,” I agreed, not too sure we’d have time. Mom handed us some homemade cookies with smiling faces as we grabbed our skates. I had to admit, Mom came up with good ideas sometimes. Even though I liked that, I still couldn’t help but feel as if she were changing everything. “No, thanks. I’m not hungry,” I said, although I was, a little. “Ready?” I asked Jen. She nodded, and we headed out the front door. The snow crunched under our boots as we walked down the street. The silence was awkward. “Did you go skating a lot last year?” I asked, blurting out the first thing that came to my mind. Jen shook her head and looked at me. Finally she said, “On Thanksgiving, Mom and I always went to visit some friends on a farm. I especially loved seeing their big turkeys.” Until then, I’d never even thought about how Jen must be feeling. She not only had a new stepfather and stepbrother; she had a new town and home, too. Jen and her mom used to live near a lake, and she’d had to move up north with us. She’d had more changes than me.
