This was a strange obituary, for it told Alfred Nobel, the man who was reading it, that he was dead. The newspaper had confused Alfred with his brother, Ludwig, who had recently died.‎ ‎    Nobel was shocked to read that he had passed away, and he was even more annoyed by the title of the obituary : The Merchant of Death Is Dead. Alfred was a very rich and successful armaments manufacturer(武器制造商).‎ ‎    This incident got him thinking about his reputation. What would people think of him after his real death? Would they really say “That was a man who profited from killing”? It was this thought ‎ that led him to leave his money一a huge amount of it—for the founding of the famous Nobel Prizes. His aim was for his money to be used to support the ongoing quest(追求) for excellence in the sciences and literature, and the ideal of peace. Thousands of men and women have been honored since the first awards were given out in 1901. The awards let the world know about the developments that may have a huge effect on our lives.‎ ‎    However, the prizes are controversial sometimes. There is often protest(抗议) at the award of the peace prize when not everyone thinks that the award-winners deserve the award. Even the award for literature has sometimes been criticized because the award committee often neglects important writers. The highly influential novelists James Joyce and Marcel Proust, for example, were never honored by the Swedish Academy.‎ ‎    Still, for the most part of the awards don’t cause many complaints. Alfred Nobel founded the prizes to recognize those who have had “the greatest benefit to mankind" and few would disagree that most of the prize winners—among them. Albert Einstein and Martin Luther King— have made contributions that deserved to be honored and remembered.‎ ‎1.How did Alfred Nobel feel when he read the obituary in the newspaper? A.Sad and worried. B.Shocked and upset. C.Surprised and confused. D.Amused and puzzled. 2.What did Alfred Nobel decide to do after reading the obituary? A.Seek excellence in the sciences, B.Donate all his money to the charity. C.Stop producing any killing weapons. D.Set up the Nobel Prizes with his money. 3.Why does the author mention James Joyce and Marcel Proust? A.To show the controversy of some Nobel Prizes. B.To give examples of influential Nobel Prizes. C.To explain the standard of giving out the Nobel Prizes. D.To prove the influence of the Nobel Prizes on literature. 4.What does the author think of the Nobel ‎ Prizes? A.There should be more female winners. B.There are too many controversial winners. C.They have honored many worthy winners. D.The committee should be more selective.‎ ‎3、    Here is a record of the discussion about AI (artificial intelligence) conducted by several scientists:‎ ‎    Scientist A: I would say that we are quite a long way off developing the AI, though I do think it will happen within the next thirty or forty years. We will probably remain in control of technology and it will help us solve many of the world’s problems. However, no one really knows what will happen if machines become more intelligent than humans. They may help us, ignore us or destroy us. I tend to believe AI will have a positive influence on our future lives, but whether that is true will be partly up to us.‎ ‎    Scientist B: I have to admit that the potential consequences of creating something that can match or go beyond human intelligence frighten me. Even now, scientists are teaching computers how to learn on their own. At some point in the near future, their intelligence may well take off and develop at an ever-increasing speed. Human beings evolve biologically very slowly and we would be quickly substituted. In the short term, there is the danger that robots will take over millions of human jobs, creating a large underclass of unemployed people. This could mean large-scale poverty and social unrest. In the lone term machines might decide the world would be better without humans.‎ ‎    Scientist C: I’m a member of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots. Forget the movie image of a terrifying Terminator stamping on human skulls (头骨) and think of what s happening right now: military machines like drones, gun turrets and sentry robots are already being used to kill with very little human input. The next step will be autonomous “murderbots” following orders but finally deciding who to kill on their own. It seems clear to me that this would be completely unethical and dangerous for humans. We need to be very cautious indeed about what we ask machines to do.‎ ‎1.What is Scientist B worried about? A.AI technology will destroy the ‎ earth. B.Computers can’t think by themselves. C.Robots will take the place of humans. D.Humans will be unhappy without machines. 2.What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to? A.I launch the campaign to Stop Killer Robots. B.We forget the movie image of a terrifying Terminator. C."Murderbots" can't decide by themselves. D."Murderbots" will be against human's orders. 3.Which statement is CORRECT according to the record? A.Scientist A thinks AI technology will never develop. B.The employment will be affected by AI technology in the future. C."Murderbots" will follow the orders of their manufactures in the wars. D.All the three scientists agree that AI technology will benefit human beings. 4.Who agree(s) AI has more negative aspects than positive aspects? A.Scientist A B.Scientist B C.Scientists B&C D.Scientists B&A ‎4、    The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem(生态系统). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat(栖息地).‎ ‎    It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.‎ ‎    Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.‎ ‎    What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.‎ ‎1.What is the passage mainly about?‎ A.Disappearance of African elephants. B.Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants. C.The effect of African elephants' search for food. D.The eating habit of African elephants.‎ ‎2.What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean?‎ A.Fixing the time. B.Worsening the state. C.Improving the quality. D.Deciding the conditions.‎ ‎3.What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?‎ A.They result from the destruction of rain forests. B.They provide food mainly for African elephants. C.They are home to many endangered animals. D.They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.‎ ‎4.The passage is developed mainly by _____.‎ A.showing the effect and then explaining the causes B.pointing out similarities and differences C.describing the changes in space order D.giving examples ‎5、The jobs of the future have not yet been invented. ①         By helping them develop classic skills that will serve them well no matter what the future holds.     1.Curiosity     Your children need to be deeply curious. ②         Ask kids, "What ingredients(配料) can we add to make these pancakes even better next time?" and then try them out. Not only are you forbidden to throw anything at the animals or feed them, but also you aren’t allowed to take photos with them in case you will be attacked. Meanwhile, you'd better not play games with untrained animals. Finally, no littering signs can be seen around the park, so please respect them.‎ ‎    I wish you a good time here.‎ Li Jin 解析:‎ ‎【要点翻译】‎ ‎1.野生动物是我们的朋友,没有它们我们不能独自生活在地球上。‎ Wild animals are our friends, without whom we can't live on the earth alone.‎ ‎2.为了保护我们的朋友及保证你的安全,请按如下方法做。‎ To protect our friends and guarantee your safety, please do as follows.‎ ‎3.绝不要靠近动物,尤其是像老虎、狮子、大象这样的危险动物。‎ Never get close to the animals, especially dangerous ones like tigers, lions, and elephants.‎ ‎4.不仅禁止你朝动物扔东西和喂养它们,而且不允许你拍照以防你被攻击。‎ Not only are you forbidden to throw anything at the animals or feed them, but also you aren't allowed to take photos with them in case you will be attacked.‎ ‎5.你最好不要和未经训练的动物做游戏。‎ You'd better not play games with untrained animals.‎ ‎6.公园里到处都能看见禁止乱扔垃圾的标志,请遵守。‎ No littering signs can be seen around the park, so please respect them.‎ ‎ ‎
