A My daughter Alisa was born blind in her right eye and was bullied (欺侮) pretty severely in school. So I quitted my job as a babysitter and then schooled my daughter heart and soul at home. A year ago a boy of 14 befriended my daughter on Facebook after reading something Alisa wrote about bullying. Today he messaged her and asked if she would like six tickets to a Colorado Rockies baseball game. They have never met in person but she said, “Sure! That would be great.” Then I received a call from his mother explaining why her son had chosen my daughter. She said he thought my daughter deserved them because of all the good she did in the community. Her son, she explained, had experienced a similar situation and was also home schooled. What she said is true. Now my daughter Alisa continues to teach groups of girls in trouble in our community how to look within themselves for the positive and how to be their own person. Everything taken into consideration, we decided to meet the mother and the boy at a local bike shop. After meeting, the boy approached my car and my daughter gave him a hug and thanked him for his generosity. She told him that she had never been to a baseball game and that she was going to take her entire family, including myself, her dad, little sister, her cousin and an aunt who has brain cancer. We all thanked one another, got in our car, and went our way. As we drove home my daughter opened the envelope. Inside it were the tickets and $100 each to buy hot dogs, pay for parking and not have any worries but a great time. My daughter has always been the giver and now she and our family are the receivers and I can not tell you how incredibly honored we feel to be on the other end. What an incredible young man to have such a kind idea. 1. What did the author once do according to the passage? A. She was a ticket seller. B. She was a babysitter. C. She was a school teacher. D. She was a social worker. 2. How did the boy get to know the author’s daughter? A. They met when buying tickets to a baseball game. B. They became familiar when talking face to face. C. They got in touch via the Internet. D. They went to the same school and met each other. 3. Why did the boy want to offer free tickets to Alisa? A. Because Alisa often helps those in trouble. B. Because he has a lot money to share. C. Because Alisa is a disabled girl. D. Because he has a similar situation with Alisa. 4. Which of the following best describes the passage? A. Where there is a will, there is a way. B. A friend in need is a friend indeed. C. Two heads are better than one. D. Good is rewarded with good. B When Peng Liyuan stepped off the plane in Moscow, the whole world wanted to know who dressed the elegant first lady. The reporter released the secret — Ma Ke. Peng Liyuan has been wearing Ma Ke’s designs for more than a decade, a fact that was only highlighted recently when she was on her first state visit, accompanying her husband President Xi Jinping. The elegant and attractive Peng, formerly a popular singer, has been compared with the US’ first lady Michelle Obama and France’s Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, since stepping off the airplane in Moscow on March 22. Suddenly, everyone was curious to know more about the first lady’s wardrobe. Even so, Ma prefers a low-¬key approach. “If you eat a tasty egg why would you want to see the hen?” she says of all the media attention. Ma’s relationship with Peng began 10 years ago after a concert in Guangzhou when a reporter told Peng she knew the designer behind the label Exception de Mixmind. Peng asked for an introduction because she was a fan of Ma’s designs and had been wearing them for years. The two naturally became friends. Ma says, “The painting reflects the painter, and clothes reflect both the designer and the wearer. Someone desires fame and wealth, or love and sympathy; what you have in your heart is reflected in the design. Those who don’t share my philosophy won’t buy my clothes. Peng is a caring person, devoted to charity and environmental protection, which is exactly what I’m doing now.” However, regardless of the brand, Peng’s support of Chinese labels has surprised millions of Chinese who favor foreign fashion brands. “Instead she presented a vision of Chinese fashion, desiring to bring Chinese designers to the world stage,” says a western designer. The first lady’s double-¬breasted coat and her black leather handbag aren’t available at any of Exception’s shops, though Exception’s physical stores do have seen a rising number of visitors. 5. The passage mainly discusses ________. A. the friendship between Peng Liyuan and her designer B. the designer of the first lady Peng Liyuan’s dress, Ma Ke C. Peng Liyuan’s clothes on her first state visit D. the reactions to Peng Liyuan’s first visit to Moscow 6. In the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 Ma Ke mentioned “an egg and the hen” to show ________. A. it is hard to explain “Which came first, the egg or the hen?” B. her dissatisfaction with the media attention on her dress C. the outcome was more important than the process D. paying such great attention to her was unnecessary 7. In the passage, Peng Liyuan ________. A. often reflects on what she has in her heart before choosing clothes B. always desires the exceptional charm of the brand C. is sympathetic and has a strong environmental consciousness D. is knowledgeable in philosophy C Why You Should Celebrate Your Mistakes When you make a mistake, big or small, cherish(珍视) it like it's the most precious thing in the world, because in some ways, it is. Most of us feel bad when we make mistakes, beat ourselves up about it, feel like failures, get mad at ourselves. And that's only natural: most of us have been taught from a young age that mistakes are bad, that we should try to avoid mistakes. We've been scolded when we make mistakes at home, school and work. Maybe not always, but probably enough times to make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction. Yet without mistakes, we could not learn or grow. If you think about it that way, mistakes should be cherished and celebrated for being one of the most amazing things in the world: they make learning possible; they make growth and improvement possible. By trial and error-trying things, making mistakes, and learning from those mistakes-we have figured out how to make electric light, to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, to fly. Mistakes make walking possible for the smallest toddler, make speech possible, make works of genius possible. Think about how we learn: we don't just consume information about something and instantly know it or know how to do it. You don't just read about painting, or writing, or computer programming, or baking, or playing the piano, and know how to do them right away. Instead, you get information about something, from reading or from another person or from observing usually...then you construct a model in your mind...then you test it out by trying it in the real world...then you make mistakes...then you revise the model based on the results of your real-world experimentation and repeat, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, until you've pretty much learned how to do something. That's how we learn as babies and toddlers, and how we learn as adults. Mistakes are how we learn to do something new, because if you succeed in something, it's probably something you already knew how to do. You haven't really grown much from that success---at most it's the last step on your journey, not the whole journey. Most of the journey was made up of mistakes, if it's a good journey. So if you value learning, if you value growing and improving, then you should value mistakes. They are amazing things that make a world of brilliance possible. 8. Why do most of us feel bad about making mistakes? A. Because we've been taught so from a young age. B. Because it's a natural part in our life. C. Because mistakes make us suffer a lot. D. Because mistakes have ruined many people's careers. 9. According to the passage, what is the right attitude to mistakes? A. We should try to avoid making mistakes. B. We should owe great inventions mainly to mistakes. C. We should treat mistakes as good chances to learn. D. We should make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction. 10. The underlined word "toddler" in Paragraph 6 probably means __________. A. a school teenager learning to write B. a kindergarten child learning to draw C. a primary school pupil learning to read D. a small child learning to walk 11. We can learn from the passage that __________. A. most of us can really grow from success B. we learn to make mistakes by trial and error C. growing and improving are based on mistakes D. we read about something and know how to do it right away D I discovered the power of fear when I became stuck to my driveway, as if my feet were crazy—glued to the cement(水泥).As much as I tried, I could not move them. The realization that my daughters were playing in Nancy's house, just one-half block away, paralyzed(麻痹) my legs, making me unable to move when I neared the end of our driveway. Dense, black smoke was rising from behind the Sycamore Maple trees on the other side of the street and was enveloping three houses, making them barely visible. Nancy's house was one of them. I tried to call out for my daughters hoping to see them run safely to my arms, but my voice was also stuck - stuck in my throat with no intention of coming out. There I stood, helpless, paralyzed and silenced by fear, unable to protect the two little girls I loved more than even I had realized. Although trapped in a body that couldn't move or speak, I could still hear. I could hear other mothers anxiously calling their children. I could hear a frightening silence that covered the neighborhood instead of the usual happy voices of children. And, finally, I could hear the alarm of the fire engine. As the alarm announced, "We're on our way," it instantly dissolved the crazy glue that had held my feet to the cement and it unlocked the soundproof box that had silenced my voice. I was free to make sure my daughters were safe. As I continued down the driveway, two little girls, my two little girls, ran toward me from across the street. They had come home to tell me about the fire in the garage next to Nancy's house. Not only did my feet and voice work now, but my eyes were also in good working order and had no trouble producing tears. 12. Why was the author stuck to her driveway? A. The fear for her daughters' safety struck her. B. Thick black smoke blocked her view. C. The cement on the driveway was still wet. D. She was too tired to move her legs. 13. What made the author able to move and speak again? A. Shouting from other anxious mothers. B. The alarm of the coming fire engine. C. Strange silence in the neighborhood. D. The courage to protect her daughters. 14. What does the author suggest at the end of the story? A. She overcame her fear and fully recovered, B. She was really thankful to see her girls saved. C. She was too excited to believe what she saw. D. She burst into tears of relief and happiness. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. The Power of Fear B. Love in Fire C. A Narrow Escape D. The Price of Fear 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后面的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Love Your Parents Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part, a source of who you are. Here are some ways to love your parents. 16 . A gentle “good morning” and “I love you” will warm a coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Without your parents, we might still wander at an unknown corner in an unknown world. Respect them more and cherish these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them, preparing yourself for when you’re off on your own. It’s OK to get angry but angry actions don’t help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, write down your feelings, or talk to a friend. 17 Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don’t get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it’s cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings and make mistakes. 18 Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents? Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or go somewhere with them. 19 Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find they are your teachers in this way or another. Some people simply may not be able to love their parents. 20 Seek help if you are being abused (虐待) in any way. Parents do not have a right to harm you. A. It’s reported that in China many children in mountainous areas still can’t go to school as a consequence of poverty. Last week, our class held a discussion about how to help them to go to school and lead a happy childhood. Here are our suggestions. To start with, some old textbooks and clothes can be collected and sent to those children so that they can be reused by the m. In addition, it’s also of great significance to appeal to more people and social organizations to help and care for those poor children. As far as I’m concerned, we should save some of our pocket money and give it to those children in need. Above all, we should give them respect, never looking down upon them because they are poor. We’ll really appreciate it if you can, through the English Weekly, increase public awareness of the poor children’s living conditions and call on more people to help them. Yours, Li Hua查看更多
