These stationary cameras have a sensor that is triggered(启动,引发) by heat or movement, letting researchers monitor animals without disturbing them. The traps can be used for months at a time sometimes catching hundreds of thousands of images. But these images, and the valuable information they reveal, typically just sit on researchers’ hard drives, unavailable to anyone else, according to Jorge Ahumada, a scientist at environmental nonprofit Conservation International. So he launched Wildlife Insights, an online platform where researchers could share their photos. His idea is to encourage teamwork between biologists and wildlife conservation organizations, and bring camera trap footage(片断) to the fore of conservation efforts. The site uses Artificial Intelligence designed by Google to overcome a key problem with these kinds of photos: camera traps produce an astronomical number of images to manually analyze, says Ahumada, many of which are blank images where the camera was triggered by its surroundings and not by wildlife. Manually sorting and deleting these photos is a laborious task. To get around that, after someone uploads footage to the Wildlife Insights database, its AI checks if the image was taken from a camera trap and automatically removes all blank images. If there is an animal in the image, the AI will identify the species. As well as collecting and reviewing the photos, the platform will provide analytics that could reveal trends in species’ population for different projects. That information could help researchers understand whether a species is increasing its range or if its numbers are dwindling. While open access is key, the platform has taken steps to make sure this information doesn’t get into the wrong hands. “You will have to ask Wildlife Insights for permission to get the locations of the images,” says Ahumada. “We will manage this process carefully because we know that poachers(偷猎者) could use this information to find endangered species.” 4. What’s the purpose of Wildlife Insights? A. To raise money for wildlife protection. B. To monitor wildlife in an undisturbed way. C. To encourage researchers to set camera traps. D. To make camera trap images available to the public. 5. What key problem does the AI help to deal with? A. Sorting wildlife images quickly. B. Tracking the photographed species. C. Analyzing the origins of blank images. D. Checking the performance of camera traps. 6. What does the underlined word “dwindling” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. Puzzling B. Doubling C. Dropping D. Missing 7. Why is Wildlife Insights careful about its data? A. To protect the privacy of uploaders. B. To avoid the illegal use of them. C. To charge fees to stop poachers. D. To ensure the accuracy of them. D 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第二段中“So he launched Wildlife Insights, an online platform where researchers could share their photos. His idea is to encourage teamwork between biologists and wildlife conservation organizations, and bring camera trap footage(片断) to the fore of conservation efforts.” 根据第三段“The site uses Artificial Intelligence designed by Google to overcome a key problem with these kinds of photos: camera traps produce an astronomical number of images to manually analyze, says Ahumada, many of which are blank images where the camera was triggered by its surroundings and not by wildlife. Manually sorting and deleting these photos is a laborious task.” 故选A。 根据画线词上文“That information could help researchers understand whether a species is increasing its range or if its numbers are”可知这些信息可以帮助研究人员了解一个物 种的活动范围是在扩大还是在减少。 A. 根据最后一段“While open access is key, the platform has taken steps to make sure this information doesn’t get into the wrong hands. ‘You will have to ask Wildlife Insights for permission to get the locations of the images,’ says Ahumada. ‘We will manage this process carefully because we know that poachers(偷猎者) could use this information to find endangered species.’” B。 C EcoTreasures, a young tour company based in Sydney, have involved a new plan in their Manly Coastal Walks to remove marine debris from Penguin habitats. The tour company specializes in Ecotourism experiences on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and within Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, New South Wales. Ecotreasures have been lucky to host a range of international study tour students visiting Sydney this winter, who have been participating in the plan. The students arrive in Australia for short stays of generally 7—14 days, which consist of English lessons and Australia tour experiences. EcoTreasures owner, Damien McClellan, has been happy to host the students on his tours and to involve a new element in the half-day adventure, with a purpose to clean up marine debris that accumulates in the natural environment known to be the habitat for little penguins. McClellan has been very proud to run these tours, which highlight a range of environmental awareness messages, and mentions, “when we visit the little penguin habitat at Collins Beach in Sydney Harbour National Park we conduct a beach clean-up. The students always put in 110% and we remove as much as marine debris from the catchment(积水处) as possible. We are all giving back to the location we are appreciating because of its natural beauty, and I’m proud of all these international guests caring for Australia’s environment.” The tours offer a great display of Sydney’s natural setting right on the city’s door step. Mr. McClellan also adds, “The students and teachers really enjoy their experience on the walk around Manly. We visit the beach, Sydney Harbour National Park, Cabbage tree Aquatic reserve and Manly suburbs all in a half day adventure. We always keep the walk fun and interesting by identifying native plants & searching for Whales from land with binoculars and other wildlife along the way.” EcoTreasures was founded in 2010 by Damien McClellan, and the business is looking forward to working with more partners in the future, developing new ecotourism plans for a range of target markets, and keeping it fun is part of the plan. EcoTreasures is Advanced Ecotourism and ROC certified. 8. What does EcoTreasures mainly specialize in? A. protecting Little Penguins. B. teaching students about environmental protection. C. cleaning up penguin habitats. D. holding ecotours in certain areas. 9. The underlined word “debris” in Paragraph 1 has a similar meaning to _________ A. water B. animal C. trash D. rock. 10. What does Mr. McClellan want to express in the third paragraph? A. His appreciation for natural beauty. B. His purpose to run the tours. C. His pride to run the tours. D. The importance of raising environmental awareness. 11. We can infer from the fourth paragraph that ____________. A. the tours are pleasant and valuable. B. the tours make the students tired. C. the tours are held far from Sydney. D. the tours are held mainly for students 【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. 根据第二段中的“The tour company specializes in Ecotourism experiences on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and within Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park,”(这家旅游公司专注于悉尼北部海滩和新南威尔士州Ku ring gai Chase国家公园内的生态旅游体验)可知,EcoTreasures专注于在在某些地区建立生态保护区,故选D项。 根据第二段中的“Eco Treasures owner, Damien McClellan, has been happy to host the students on his tours and to involve a new element in the half-day adventure, with a purpose to clean up marine debris that accumulates in the natural environment known to be the habitat for little penguins.” 根据第三段中的“McClellan has been very proud to run these tours, which highlight a range of environmental awareness messages”可知,组织这些旅游活动令麦克莱伦感到很自豪,因为它们突出了一系列环保意识信息,由此可知,麦克莱伦在该段主要想表达组织这些旅游活动的自豪感,故选C项。 根据第四段中的“The students and teachers really enjoy their experience on the walk around Manly. We visit the beach, Sydney Harbour National Park, Cabbage tree Aquatic reserve and Manly suburbs all in a half day adventure. We always keep the walk fun and interesting by identifying native plants & searching for Whales from land with binoculars and other wildlife along the way.”(学生和老师真的很享受他们在曼利散步的经历。 D I’ve been teaching college for many years, long enough to note the steady relaxation of attention in matters of student dress. I’ve long been used to the torn jeans, shorts in the dead of the Maine winter, and ball caps worn backward. Still, I took note recently when one of my students showed up in sleep bottoms. I’m familiar with the school of thought that says how students dress is irrelevant, so long as they’re learning. But I also wonder about the wisdom of blurring(模糊) the line between bed and desk. I smile when I think back on the occasions that my parents associated us with needing to look tidy and neat. Once, when I was 14 and my brother 12, my father announced that he was taking us into Manhattan (just a subway ride away) to see the film “2001: A Space Odyssey.” My brother and I were excited by the proposal, but were momentarily upset when my father directed us to put on our best clothes, including jackets and ties. “But why?” I begged, not wanting to change out of my comfortable jeans, T-shirt, and sneakers. “Because,” he said, “we’re going to New York.” I can still see the stars in his eyes as he said these words. So yes, I’m all for freedom of choice in matters of dress, and yes, I do want my students to be comfortable. But I also want to pay my respects to those students who believe that appearance counts. I think of the woman – a somewhat older student—I had in class a few years ago. She was someone to whom science did not come easily: She worked hard for respectable grades on every assignment. But I was struck by how tastefully she dressed, day after day. When the course ended, I took a moment to mention this to her. “You always looked so nice,” I remarked. “As if you were ready to take on the world. She answered, as if it were obvious, “I’ve waited 12 years to return to school, and I dress up to remind myself to be serious about it.” And, I might add, she seemed perfectly comfortable to me. 12. What kind of feeling is expressed in Paragraph 1? A. Excitement. B. Curiosity. C. Sympathy. D. Discontent. 13. What do we know about the author’s father? A. He valued a sense of ceremony in life. B. He liked wearing comfortable clothes. C. He always thought highly of himself. D. He was a regular movie-goer. 14. Why did the woman earn the author’s respect? A. She achieved high grades easily. B. She showed great talent for science. C. She pursued knowledge at an old age. D. She attached great importance to her dress. 15. What message does the author want to convey in the text? A. You are what you wear. B. Never judge a man by his appearance. C. You are never too old to learn. D. Treat each day like a special day. D 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第一段“I’ve been teaching college for many years, long enough to note the steady relaxation of attention in matters of student dress. But I also wonder about the wisdom of blurring(模糊) the line between bed and desk.” 根据第二段中“I smile when I think back on the occasions that my parents associated us with needing to look tidy and neat. Once, when I was 14 and my brother 12, my father announced that he was taking us into Manhattan (just a subway ride away) to see the film “2001: A Space Odyssey.” My brother and I were excited by the proposal, but were momentarily upset when my father directed us to put on our best clothes, including jackets and ties.(每当我回想起父母把我们和需要整洁的形象联系在一起的时候,我就会微笑。 故选A。 根据倒数第三段中“She was someone to whom science did not come easily: She worked hard for respectable grades on every assignment. But I was struck by how tastefully she dressed, day after day.” 根据第五段“So yes, I’m all for freedom of choice in matters of dress, and yes, I do want my students to be comfortable. But I also want to pay my respects to those students who believe that appearance counts.” 故选A。 When you think about art, you might think of it as permanent. After all, that picture you drew in kindergarten might still hang on your refrigerator years later. ___16___ Think about a Broadway performance. When it’s over, it’s over. Sure, it might live on in your memory or on film. But the live show was a special event. It was limited to one time and place. Can you think of other forms of art that are temporary? ___17___ Have you ever spent hours building a beautiful sandcastle? If you have, you probably were sad when it was time to leave the beach. You knew your work of art would be gone as soon as the tide came in. The sandy beach is a canvas(油画布) that nature erases daily. Most of the time, art made from sand can’t last long. Still, many people love using sand to create their own unique vision of beauty. ___18___ It is a type of live performance art. Artists who work in sand animation use sand to make a set of images that usually tell a story. They often start with a large amount of sand on a flat surface, such as a table. They then use their hands and fingers to draw in the sand. ___19___ However, the wide variety of beautiful and highly-detailed sand artworks might surprise you. Many of these works of art are temporary. That’s where the animation part comes in. Sand animation artists create a series of images that move to tell a story. They might also use music and special lighting to complete the effect. Sometimes they take photographs of or video their creation throughout the process. ___20___ A. Not all works of art are permanent, though. B. Sand animation is beautiful but lasts only at the moment. C. If you’re a fan of the beach, sandcastles might come to mind. D. One of the most attractive types of sand art is sand animation. E. Then, they turn it into a sand animation movie when it’s finished. F. It might seem like using sand would limit the art you could make. G. Building a sand castle is a family-friendly activity perfect for large groups. A 17. C 18. D 19. F 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“When you think about art, you might think of it as permanent. After all, that picture you drew in kindergarten might still hang on your refrigerator years later.(当你想到艺术时,你可能会认为它是永恒的。 When it’s over, it’s over. Sure, it might live on in your memory or on film. But the live show was a special event. It was limited to one time and place.( 想想百老汇的演出。 【17题详解】 根据上文“Can you think of other forms of art that are temporary?(你还能想到其他暂时的艺术形式吗?)”以及后文“Have you ever spent hours building a beautiful sandcastle?(你曾经花了几个小时建造一个美丽的沙堡吗?)” 【18题详解】 根据上文“Most of the time, art made from sand can’t last long. Still, many people love using sand to create their own unique vision of beauty.(大多数时候,用沙子做的艺术品不会持续太久。尽管如此,还是有很多人喜欢用沙子来创造自己独特的美景)”以及后文“It is a type of live performance art. Artists who work in sand animation use sand to make a set of images that usually tell a story. They often start with a large amount of sand on a flat surface, such as a table. They then use their hands and fingers to draw in the sand.(它是一种现场表演艺术。 【20题详解】 根据上文“Sand animation artists create a series of images that move to tell a story. They might also use music and special lighting to complete the effect. Sometimes they take photographs of or video their creation throughout the process.(沙画艺术家创造了一系列的图像,通过移动来讲述一个故事。 It can be hard to make a name in a male-dominated sport as a woman.
