Some were predictable. Some surprised. But all offered a glimpse into the similarities and differences in global and Chinese user trends. Despite being blocked in China since 2010, Google’s year close list, released Wednesday, showed some likeness with Baidu’s year-end list (released December 2) with terms “Olympics” and Disney’s animated hit “Zootopia.” Chinese also shared interest in the US presidential election. “Donald Trump” and “Hillary Clinton” listed fifth and ninth among the top “People in Focus” searched on Baidu, while Trump and Hillary ranked first and second in Google’s People category. Google ranked the president-elect third overall, behind “Pokemon Go” and “iPhone 7.” As expected, most issues Chinese users searched inward focused on news such as the recent “Two-Child Policy” or “Relaxed Hukou restrictions.” Also, the Baidu lists reflected little on global news trends—the only shared international event was the Kumamoto Earthquake, ranking ninth on Baidu and tenth on Google. Though each list was categorized differently—with Baidu focusing heavily on age groups, domestic celebrities (名人) and “civic pride,” both showed the world mourned for some of the same people that passed in 2016. “Muhammad Ali” ranked first in Baidu’s “Tears events,” while the boxing legend came in fifth on Google’s “Losses,” behind Prince, David Bowie, Christina Grimmie and Alan Rickman. 21. Which issue among the top “annual search” was listed both on Google and Baidu? A. Donald Trump. B. iPhone 7. C. Zootopia. D. Kumamoto Earthquake. 22. From the passage we can infer in 2016 Chinese searchers focused more on . A. sports news B. celebrity news C. earthquake news D. national news 23. Which column would the passage probably come from? A. Language. B. Information technology. C. Culture. D. Life. B It’s not a big surprise that Grace Vander Waal was crowned winner during the “America’s Got Talent” final Wednesday night. The 12-year-old singer and ukulele (四弦琴) player became a favorite of the judges and the crowd during her first appearance on the NBC show in June, when she belted out her original song, “I Don’t Know My Name.” “You are the next Taylor Swift,” difficult-to-impress judge Simon Cowell declared at the time. The girl from New York State writes her own songs and sings with a voice mature beyond her years. During the final round this week, she performed “Clay (黏土) ,” a song about responding to bullies. “Your silly words, I won’t live inside your world. 'Cause your punches and your names, all your jokes and stupid games, they don’t work,” she sang. “No, they don’t hurt. Watch them just go right through me, because they mean nothing to me. Try to change my shape, but, baby, I’m not clay. Sorry, not today.” “The most amazing thing about Grace is that you haven’t heard anybody who sounds like her,” judge Howie Mandel said, “You haven’t heard any lyrics (抒情诗) from somebody that is like her.” When asked by crowd whether there is any artist whose career she wanted to imitate, the answer was easy for Grace: Taylor Swift, who also learned to play a string instrument as a preteen and wrote her own songs at a young age. “That would be amazing, but really, honestly, as long as I can get a living off of anything in music, I am going to be happy,” Grace said. On Wednesday night, Grace became the first female and first child act to win the show since its first season, when Bianca Ryan was crowned winner. 24. What do we know about the judge Simon Cowell from the passage? A. He is serious and handsome. B. He always encourages the contestants. C. He is not so easy to be attracted by a voice. D. He often gives the contestants high scores. 25. What is Grace Vander Waal’s purpose in her original song “Clay”? A. To tell people she likes playing clay. B. To show her refusal attitude to bullies. C. To respond to a current political problem. D. To show she was heavily harmed by bullies. 26. What is the similarity between Grace and Taylor Swift according to this passage? A. They both became famous because of the TV show. B. They wrote their own songs at a young age. C. They care about the students’ bully problems on campus. D. They like playing drums and other instruments. 27. The judge Howie Mandel felt most surprised because . A. both Grace’s voice and the words of her songs are unique B. Grace sings her original songs with a voice like her peers’ C. Grace masters many instruments at an early age D. Grace wants to be the next Taylor Swift C With the fast development of our economy and tourism, we are supposed to further understand people around the world. Not a bit of it! Superb systems of communication by air, sea and land make it possible for us to visit each other’s countries at a reasonable cost. What was once the “grand tour”, reserved for only the very rich, is now within everybody’s grasp so that modern travelers enjoy a level of comfort. But what’s the sense of this mass exchange of populations if the nations of the world keep ignoring each other? Many tourist organizations deliberately set out to protect their travelers from too much contact with the local population. The modern tourist leads a sheltered life, such as at international hotels, eating food and sipping drink there. However, he stares at the natives from a distance. Guided tours to places of interest are carefully planned. The tourist is allowed to see only what the organizers want him to see and no more, and language also holds them back. So he is only too happy to be protected in this way. The sad thing about this situation is that it leads to the continuance of national stereotypes (成见) . That is, we don’t see the people of other nations as they really are, but as we have been brought up to believe what they are. So when you set out on your travels, the only characteristics you notice are those which confirm your previous knowledge. You leave with the highly unoriginal and inaccurate impression that, say, “Latin people shout a lot”. You only have to make foreign friends to understand how absurd and harmful national stereotypes are. But how can you make foreign friends when the tourist trade does its best to prevent you? 28. What was called “Grand tour” in the past has now become ________. A. a tour still enjoyed by rich people B. a tour out of common people’s reach C. a tour everyone can set out for free D. a tour accessible to everyone 29. The underlined phrase “lead a sheltered life” probably means . A. leading a life that is served well by natives B. leading a life that is cut off from the natives C. leading a life that is scheduled well D. leading a life that is protected well from accidents 30. What is the author’s attitude toward tourism? A. Neutral. B. Positive. C. Objective. D. Critical. 31. The author wrote this passage to tell us . A. previous knowledge is necessary for tourists B. guided tour is disappointing C. the way of touring should be changed D. national stereotypes should be changed D A newly-published study has shown that loneliness can spread from one person to another, like a disease. Researchers used information from the Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948. The Framingham study gathers information about physical and mental health, personal behavior and diet. At first, the study involved about five thousand people in the American state of Massachusetts. Now, more than twelve thousand individuals are taking part. Information from the Framingham study showed earlier that happiness can spread from person to person. So can behaviors like obesity(肥胖) and the ability to stop smoking. University of Chicago psychologist John Cacioppo led the recent study. He and other researchers attempted to show how often people felt lonely. They found that the feeling of loneliness spread through social groups. Having a social connection with a lonely person increased the chances that another individual would feel lonely. In fact, a friend of a lonely person was fifty-two percent more likely to develop feelings of loneliness. A friend of that person was twenty-five percent more likely. The researchers say this shows that a person could indirectly be affected by someone’s loneliness. The effect was strongest among friends. Neighbors were the second most affected group. The effect was weaker on husbands and wives, and brothers and sisters. The researchers also found that loneliness spread more easily among women than men. The new study involved researchers from the University of Chicago, Harvard University and the University of California at San Diego. A report on the findings was published this month in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The New York Times newspaper reports that, on average, people experience feelings of loneliness about forty-eight days a year. Yet the study found that having a friend who is lonely can add about seventeen days a year of loneliness. It also found that every additional friend can decrease loneliness by about five percent, or two and a half fewer lonely days. Loneliness has been linked to health problems like depression and sleeping difficulties. The researchers believe that knowing the causes of loneliness could help in reducing it. The researchers did not study how loneliness spreads. However, the study suggests that people can take steps to stop the spread of loneliness. 32. What does this text mainly talk about? A. Loneliness being harmful. B. How loneliness spreads. C. Loneliness being infectious. D. Why people feel lonely. 33. Which of the following statements about the Framingham study is Not true? A. With the following tips, you can look forward to doubling that. 36 No, you don’t need to take out a pencil and paper; you can do this in your head, especially if whatever you are reading is a news article or a dense report. Simply read the first two paragraphs of the text to get an overview of its main points and, from there, jump down each paragraph reading only the first sentence. These are the brain exercises that help you get smarter. Use a pointer We know using your finger to read can make you feel like you’ve traveled backward to the second grade, but it’s one of the easiest ways to increase speed. 37 Aim to move the pointer faster and faster with each line. You’ll be forced to group words together in order to keep up. Stop repeating Experts say rereading text you’ve already read, accounts for up to 30 percent of the average reader’s reading time. 38 Just being aware of how much time it can waste will also be of significance. Minimize subvocalization Subvocalization means saying words in your head (or even under your breath) while you read them. And while researchers have found it’s not possible to completely get rid of the habit, it is possible to cut it down. 39 To prove to yourself that silencing your inner voice is possible, try saying “one, two, three” aloud while you read in your head. You’ll be surprised how much you can still understand. 40 In order to do this, you’ve got to fully engage in the text. What do you hope to get? Why do you want to learn the material in the first place? If whatever you are reading isn’t something you’re fully committed to, skip it. A wandering mind will lead to slower reading times. A. If you don’t want to use your finger, hold a pen or pencil under each line of text to keep your eyes focused. B. Chewing gum or listening to music can distract you from reading aloud in your head. C. Choose some paragraphs you are interested in. D. Involve yourself in silent surroundings while reading. E. Using a pointer should help you break the habit. F. Practice active reading only. G. Outline the text. Two years ago, Doniece overheard a homeless woman on a San Francisco street say that she’d never be clean. M: I’ve already known that.Anyway,I have bought the tickets.I will come back if I’m unhappy there.Don’t worry about me. W: I plan to have a party for you before that. You choose the time, alright? M: That’s very kind of you. (Text 9) W: So,have you got any plans for the weekend? M: Yeah,my father and I are going to the outdoor activity center in the mountains. W: Really? What is it like? M: Well, you can do all kinds of things. We’re going to go dirtboarding. W: What’s that? M: It’s like skateboarding or snowboarding. You have a board with wheels. You can go down mountain paths on it. W: It sounds far too difficult. M: So where are you going? W: Paris! I’m so excited! M: Paris, wow! W: Yeah, we’re going to go sightseeing, such as taking a boat along the River Seine. And then there are many art galleries.I can’t wait to go round the Louvre Museum and see those famous paintings.Picasso is my favorite artist. M: I think his paintings are somewhere.I like them very much. W: Yeah,I know, they’re in the Orsay Museum. We’re going there too.And then I want to go to the Rodin Museum to see the famous statue—The Thinker. And of course we’ll go shopping and taste French foods. (Text 10) M: I’m living in Australia with my family. Most of the people here used to live in the UK.The two countries share many traditions. One tradition that many Australians have followed till now is having a Christmas holiday. It is always very hot on Christmas Day in Australia because we are on the other side of the world. What I like most about Christmas are the Christmas trees and the presents. But my mum always cares about the Christmas dinner very much. She spends all morning cooking. She cooks roast turkey with roast potatoes and vegetables. I have to get the table ready with my two sisters. Then we will take a cracker(爆竹) to pull. The cracker is something that looks like a cardboard tube. The tube is covered with colored paper and you pull the ends to make it open with a bang! After that,we can start to eat.The meal seems to go on forever! 1—5BBACC 6—10BCABC 11—15CABAB 16—20BACBB查看更多
