And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law. However, their remote locations mean that the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of “lawlessness” in the world. The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote comers of thin area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne. “I have a special love for the French Guianese people. 1 have worked there on and off for almost ten years ," says Gin. "I've been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don't see it as a lawless Und. But rather I Me it as an area of freedom." “I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life," continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly.” His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the moderm French Republic, which bring with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide. 4. Many people alive today would have died of childhood diseases if they had been born 100 years ago. Because more people live longer, there are more people around than at any other given time. In fact, it is a decrease in death rates instead of an increase in birthrates that has led to the population explosion. Prolonging human life has also increased the dependency load. In all societies, people who are disabled or too young or too old to work are dependent on the rest of society to provide for them. In hunting and gathering cultures, old people who could not keep up might be left behind to die. In times of food shortage, babies might be allowed to die because they could not survive if their parents starved, whereas if the parents survived they could have another child. In most present societies, people feel a moral obligation to keep people alive whether they can work or not. We have a great many people today who live past the age at which they want to work or are able to work; we also have rules which require people to retire at a certain age. Unless these people were able to save money for their retirement, somebody else must support them. In the United States many retired people live on social security checks which are so little that they must live in near poverty. Older people have more illnesses than young or middle-aged people; unless they have wealth or private or government insurance, they must often “go on welfare” if they have a serious illness. When older people become too weak and ill to care for themselves, they create serious problems for their families. In the past and in some traditional cultures, they would be cared for at home until they died. Today, with most members of a household working or in school, there is often no one at home who can care for a sick or weak person. To meet this need, a great many nursing homes and convalescent hospitals have been built. These are often profit-making organizations, although some are sponsored by religious and other nonprofit groups. While a few of these institutions are good, most of them are simply “dumping grounds” for the dying in which “care” is given by poorly-paid, overworked, and under-skilled personnel. 12. The author believes that the population explosion results from______. A. an increase in birthrates B. a decrease in death rates C. the industrial development D. human beings’ cultural advances 13. It can be inferred from the passage that in hunting and gathering cultures ______ A. it was a moral responsibility for the families to keep alive the aged people who could not work B. old people were given the task of passing on the cultural wisdom of the tribe to new generations C. the survival of babies was less important than that of their parents in times of starvation D. death was celebrated as a time of rejoicing for an individual freed of the hardships of life 14. According to the passage, which of the following statements about the old people in the United States is True? A. When they reach a certain age, they retire and benefit from retirement. B. A minority of them remain in a state of near poverty after their retirement. C. With the rising prices, they must suffer more from unbearable burdens than ever. D. Many of them live on social security money which is hardly enough. 15. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude toward most of the nursing homes and convalescent hospitals? A. Critical. B. Approving. C. Optimistic. D. Sympathetic. 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. A 【解析】 本文是一篇记叙文。文章分析了人口增长的真正原因及美国的老年人问题。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第 1 段最后一句 …it is a decrease in death rates, not an increase in birthrates, that has led to the population explosion “导致人口爆炸的是死亡率的下降,而不是出生率的上升”可推知,作者认为人口爆炸的原因是死亡率的下降。故此题答案为B。 【13题详解】 推断判断题。根据文章第 2 段第 4 句 …infants might be allowed to die because they could not survive if their parents starved, where as if the parents survived they could have another child“婴儿可能会被允许死亡,因为如果他们的父母挨饿,他们就无法生存,而如果父母幸存下来,他们就可以再生一个孩子”可推知,在狩猎和采集文化中,婴儿的生存不如他们的父母在饥饿时期的生存重要。故此题答案为C。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第 2 段倒数第 2 句In the United States many retired people live on social security checks which are so little that they must live in near poverty “在美国,许多退休人员靠微薄的社会保障金生活,他们必须生活在贫困的边缘”可推知,他们中的许多人靠社会保障金生活,这远远不够。故此题答案为 D。 【15题详解】 推断判断题。根据文章最后一句 …most of them are simply “dumping grounds” for the dying in which “care” is given by poorly paid, overworked, and under skilled personnel “它们中的大多数只不过是为垂死之人提供的“垃圾场”,在那里,“护理”是由报酬低、工作过度和缺乏技能的人员提供的”可推知,作者对大多数养老院和疗养院持“批评的”态度。故此题答案为A。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If anyone had told me three years ago that I would be spending most of my weekends camping, I would have laughed heartily. I still remember how hard first day was. Before getting into the car, I thought I had learned the instructor’s orders, so once I started the car, my mind goes blank. I forgot what he had said to me altogether. The instructor kept repeating the word, “Speed up!” “Slow down!” “Turning left!” I was so much nervous that I could hardly tell which direction was left. A few minutes late, the instructor asked me to stop the car. It was a relief and I came to a suddenly stop just in the middle on the road. 【答案】 【解析】 【详解】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者在暑假期间考驾照第一天发生的故事。 1. 考查数词。在我十八岁生日后的那个暑假。eighteen意思为“十八,十八个”,表示数量,eighteenth表示“第十八个的”,故将eighteen改为eighteenth。 2. 考查冠词。我依然记得第一天是多么艰难。句中特指开始学驾照的第一天,所以在first前加上the。也可以加上my,my first day表示“我(学驾照)的第一天”。故在first前加the或my。 3. 考查连词。根据句意可知作者本以为自己已经掌握了教练的话,结果一发动车,脑中一片空白。所以前后文为转折关系。故将so改为but。 4. 考查时态。根据前文中的started可知时态为一般过去时,故将goes改为went。 5. 考查单复数。教练一直喊“加速”,“减速”,“左转”。 word的意思主要是“单词,消息”,words 可以表示为word的复数,表示某人说的话。这里指教练说的那些话,故将word改为words。 6. 考查非谓语动词。分析语境可知教练的话“加速”,“减速”,“左转”都是祈使句,根据前文“Speed up!” “Slow down!”也可以看得出来。祈使句应该用动词原形,故将Turning改为Turn。 7. 考查固定句型。我如此紧张以至于无法分辨哪个方向是左。固定句型so...that表示“如此...以至于....”,much为多余成分。故将much去掉。 8. 考查副词。做形容词的时候,later是late的比较级,如:Their deadline is quite late. Ours is even later.(他们的截止日期很迟.我们的更迟.)做副词的时候,late是迟的意思,later是稍后、随后的意思。句意:几分钟之后。故将late改为later。 9. 考查形容词。我紧急刹车。suddenly是副词,表示“意外地,忽然地”。 sudden 为形容词,表示“突然的;迅速的”。a sudden stop表示“急刹车”。故将suddenly改为sudden。 10. 考查介词。分析语境可知作者表示“在路中间急刹车”,on the road表示“在路上”, the middle of the road表示“路的中央”,强调的是“the middle”。故将on改为of。 第五部分:书面表达(满分30分) 52.假定你是李华,你校将举行“读书节” ,请你写封邮件邀请在你校学习Tony参加。内容包括: 1.目的和时间: 2.内容:交换书籍、西方文学讲座、中国诗歌朗诵比赛等。 注意:1.词数100左右;信的开头已经写好。 2.可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。 参考词汇: 读书节Reading Festival 交换exchange 文学literature 诗歌朗诵poetry reading Dear Tony, How are you doing? _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear_Tony, How_are_you_doing?
