Students spent the most time on social media, reading email, online shopping for items and watching videos.‎ Their academic performance suffered. In all, 127 students agreed to participate in the study, and they were monitored when they went online. Motivation to succeed in class was measured by an online survey sent to each participant when the term was over.‎ Interestingly, using the Internet for class purposes did not help students` test scores. But Ravizza said she wasn’t surprised. “There were no Internet- based assignments in this course, which means that most of the `academic use` was downloading lecture slides in order to follow along or take notes.”‎ ‎“Previous research has shown that taking notes on a laptop is not as beneficial for learning as writing notes by hand.
