B An Indian barber has come up with a novel technique to give people haircuts using just a small comb and a burning candle instead of a pair of scissors. Just like any barber, Dasharath Kumar, 28, combs the hair and meticulously runs the flame of the candle on the ends, giving it a unique finish. The ‘cutting-edge’ technique has made him the most demanded barber in his small village in Gulbarga in Karnataka in southern India. While Dasharath joined his family business when he was 15, the unique idea only clicked him five years ago. He says: “Electricity cut was common in our village and we were used to working in dark. But one evening while I was cutting the hair of a customer, power went off and I had to use the light from a candle to finish the haircut. But the flames of the candle that night inspired me to think of using a new technique for trimming(修剪) hair.” “I had bunch of regular customers so when I told them about the experiment, they happily said they trusted me and my skills and gave a nod for the new technique. Surprisingly, it came out very well. Since then there was no looking back.” Started with only 20 pence, customers now happily pay him £1 for his novel way of haircut. One of his daring customers Yusuf Khan, who waited for nearly two hours for his turn, said: 4 “Every barber gives a haircut using scissors but the fun of getting a haircut with a candle flame is unbeatable. Initially, I was not prepared for it but once I saw the magic of his hands, I never went back to a regular barber.” 24. The best title for the passage is probably _____. A. An amazing Indian barber B. A latest cutting fashion C. A regular barber’s future D. What made a good barber 25. The underlined word “meticulously” probably means _____. A. casually B. carefully C. freely D. randomly 26. When was Dasharath inspired to trim hair with a burning candle? A. At the age of five. B. After his graduation. C. After a power failure. D. When it’s getting dark. 27. What can we conclude from the text? A. No customers want to be back to Dasharath’s salon. B. Dasharath charges more money than any other barber. C. A traditional barber can’t make a living in the future. D. Many people are attracted by Dasharath’s technique. C Parents of pupils at Greasley Beauvale primary school, in Newthorpe, Notts, are marked from A to D based on their involvement with their children’s education. “The system is intended to improve the children’s performance at school by encouraging their parents to attend events, such as parents’ evenings and plays, and help with learning at home.” It has been in place since 2011 and has become public knowledge these days thanks to a report from Office for Standards in Education(Ofsted) earlier this month. “Children of parents in groups A and B make significantly better progress than those whose parents are in groups C and D, but that the system ensures less-engaged parents are productively supported by the school,” wrote Sir Michael Wilshaw, head of Ofsted, assessing Nottinghamshire schools in his final annual report. Then how do parents feel about being graded? “It makes my day! Telling a parent what the influence their lack of engagement is having on the life chances of their child is not easy,” said Pat Walker, 63, whose eight-year-old granddaughter attends the school. “It’s absolutely ridiculous. Those parents who work nine to five won’t have time to have as much input as, say, stay-at-home mums who have the time to contribute more and go to more school events,” said a mother-of-one. Another mother said: “I try not to take notice of it, but it really angers me that the teachers are just sitting in the room judging us all and giving us marks. It’s one thing when your child gets a bad grade, but now they openly embarrass us parents too. What on earth are teachers for? It is their job, not ours!” 28. The system mainly aims to _____. A. assess parents’ involvement in education B. improve students’ performance at school C. get more parents to help build the school 5 D. test the school’s unique teaching methods 29. It can be inferred from the text that _____. A. the school has to report to Ofsted every year B. the system has been adopted across the country C. the public knew the system very well 11 years ago D. the system hasn’t become well-known until recently 30. What does Pat Walker think of the system? A. Wasteful. B. Absurd. C. Helpful. D. Risky. 31. What does the mother imply in the last paragraph? A. Teachers have no right to judge or mark anyone. B. Schools should have done it more professionally. C. The move is supposed to get improved in the future. D. The move has switched duty from teachers to parents. D “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” But now scientists have given us another warning: too much play with smartphones or computers makes you dull too. “Many focus on the benefits of digital devices(设备) in education but ignore the costs,” said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, “losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs.” Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spend about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures and videos of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smartphones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again. Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn’t show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some sense, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us. “Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction.” said Professor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco. Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 2-16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were surprising: Their children could use a tablet (平板电脑) (59%) and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces(鞋带) (53%)! So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called “Generation Helpless”. 32. According to Professor Greenfield, using digital media in education leads to _____. A. being in bad terms with family members B. failing to relate to other people’s emotions C. making more mistakes when taking exams D. falling far behind others in all schoolwork 33. Scientists think the results of Greenfield’s experiment _____. A. are far from perfect B. are quite surprising 6 C. are alarming for people D. need to be improved 34. What can we know from the text? A. Students learned how to describe emotions in the experiment. B. Students living without screens did much better in studies. C. Too much play with digital devices raised some worries. D. Most of the UK children couldn’t tie their shoe laces. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Screens harm emotions B. Here comes a digital world! C. Stay away from the Internet D. Say no to cigarettes and alcohol. Lifelong habits start during high school years, so make sure the habits you are forming are good ones. Getting hooked on cigarettes and alcohol at a young age can lead to an adulthood spent battling addictive habits. 39 Exercise regularly. Physical activity helps build a strong body and mind. Teens who exercise throughout high school benefit from a healthy body and a mind that is more at ease with less stress. Share with friends and family. 40 A healthy teen will find someone to talk with about their problems rather than dealing with them alone or not dealing with them at all.
