It is a world-famous castle B My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and toget rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble. 24. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set? A. He got an older model than he had expected. B. He couldn’t return it when it was broken. C. He could have bought it at a lower price. D. He failed to find any movie shows on it. 25. Which of the following can best replace the phrase “signed off” in paragraph 1? A. ended all their programs B. provided fewer channels C. changed to commercials D. showed all-night movies 26. How did the author finally get this TV set working again? A. By shaking and hitting it B. By turning it on and off C. By switching channels D. By having it repaired 27. How does the author sound when telling the story? A. Curious B Anxious C Cautious D Humorous C One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem — inability to read. In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room.” I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical (相同的)to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer. Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued to the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together. My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. I never told my mother about my “miraculous” (奇迹般的) experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held. 28. The author’s mother told him to borrow a book in order to_____. A. encourage him to do more walking B. let him spend a meaningful summer C. help cure him of his reading problem D. make him learn more about weapons 29. The book caught the author’s eye because_____. A. it contained pretty pictures of animals B. it reminded him of his own dog C. he found its title easy to understand D. he liked children’s stories very much 30. Why could the author manage to read the book through? A. He was forced by his mother to read it. B. He identified with the story in the book. C. The book told the story of his pet dog. D. The happy ending of the story attracted him. 31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. The author has become a successful writer. B. The author’s mother read the same book. C. The author’s mother rewarded him with books. D. The author has had happy summers ever since. 32. Which one could be the best title of the passage? A. The Charm of a Book B. Mum’s Strict Order C. Reunion with My Beagle D. My Passion for Reading D In China, chain restaurants, especially the big multinational ones, are cool. Going to Starbucks, for example, is a status symbol. It not only says, “I’m rich enough to buy this overpriced coffee,” but also, “I’m cosmopolitan(见多识广的)enough to be part of globalization.” Where I come from in the UK, however, chains are neither fashionable nor gourmet (美食的). Chains are where you go on New Year’s Day when nowhere else is open, or when you are 5 years old and your parents can’t stand hearing, “I’m huuuuuungry!” any longer. In my own case (with regards to McDonald’s), a chainis where you are taken on your first “date”. Even at the age of 13, I knew to give the guy the “let’s just be friends” phone call the next day. In the UK, independent cafes and restaurants are making a comeback on the fashion scene. Nowadays, a Londoner who says “let’s meet for a coffee at Monmouth” (an independent cafe) is much cooler than one who says “let’s go to Starbucks”. Even if Monmouth’s coffee is a little more expensive, there’s a satisfaction in knowing your pounds aren’t going straight to the big corporations. Of course, there are chain stores all over the UK; you can’t go five minutes without spotting a Costa Coffee. But numbers do not add up to good taste. I do, however, have a confession (坦白). After moving to China I had moments when all the rice and Kung Pao Chicken became too much. I, too, have returned to McDonald’s. 33.Many Chinese people like to go to multinational chain restaurants because ______. A. the restaurants give customers a taste of foreign culture. B. the restaurants offer different food and drinks from other restaurants. C. they believe that eating there will show their wealth and social status. D. these restaurants are perfect places for a romantic date. 34.Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. The author has grown tired of Chinese food. B. Branches of Monmouth’s cafe can be found all over the UK. C. Most independent stores are closed on New Year’s Day in the UK. D. It is cool in the UK to take your first date to a chain restaurant. 35.We can infer from the article that ______. A. the author doesn’t like food from Pizza Hut. B. many Britons don’t like big corporations. C. many Britons think that numbers mean poor quality. D. the author doesn’t like to follow fashion trends. Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until the 20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history--- a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living. Britain was only the beginning. 57_ .The process(过程) of urbanization--- the migration (迁移) of people from the countryside to the city--- was the result of modernization, which has rapidly changed how people live and where they live. In 1990, fewer than 40% of Americans lived in urban areas. Today, over 82% of Americans live in cities. Only about 2% live on farms. 58 . Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized. Even in advanced agricultural societies, it took about ninety-five people on farms to feed five people in cities. _ 59__ . Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite(精英) and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them. Cities survived by taxing(对…征税)farmers and were limited in size by the amount of surplus(剩余的;多余的) food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city. Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country. _60_ . But as a matter of fact, he left me alone to complete the whole work. (3) Text 4 W: When is our plane to take off? M: At half past five. W: Oh, dear. We have only 15 minutes to go through customs(海关) and check our baggage. (4) Text 5 W: What a day! Do you always have weather like this in May? M: I have never experienced such hot and rainy days at least. (5) Text 6 M: Susan, are you coming for lunch with us? W: Yes, Alex, but I have to put these things on the table away first. M: All the things? Oh, dear, it will take you ages. W: I know, but there isn’t enough space to keep everything. I want to put these things on the top of the shelf. M: Oh, no. Louise fell off a chair when she tried to put a bottle on the top of a shelf last week, (6) and she is still in hospital now. W: OK. I’ll deal with all this after lunch. (7) Text 7 W: Hello, this is the International Youth Hostel. How can I help you? M: I want to book three single rooms for next Monday. W: Sorry. We have only one single room and one double room. (8) Would you like to book now? M: As long as the three of us can have a place to sleep, it’s OK. (8) Do you take bank cards? W: Yes, we accept CB, ABC, and CCB cards. M: And how about the Internet? W: There’s Internet in the rooms. But it has to be paid for by the hour. (9) M: That’s OK. Is breakfast included? W: Yes, breakfast is free, and there is also free parking. M: Fantastic. Text 8 M: I’m hungry. W: So am I. But we don’t have much money. (10) M: We have enough for McDonald’s. (10) W: That would be great. I will have a Fish set. (11) It’s not quite so fatty as a Big Mac. M: Well, if you want low-fat food, you’d best go someplace else. W: Well, they taste pretty good, don’t they? M: The unhealthy stuff usually does. You stay here, and I’ll go order. W: Take your time! I’m hungry but I’m tired as well. M: OK. Fish for you, Big Mac for me. That’s what you wanted, right? W: That’s great. They do a lot of different things now, don’t they? There are salads, Mexican burgers, all sorts of things. (12) M: Yes, I think so. McDonald’s sure helps when you are short on time and money. Text 9 M: Hey, Joan. I need your advice. W: Of course. How can I help? M: I’m hosting my first business lunch next week. Usually, I take a co-worker with me, but this time I’m on my own. (13) I want to do everything right. W: I’m happy to give you some advice. M: Good. Is there anything in particular I should do, or should not do? W: Use good table manners, and don’t be late! (14) Where are you having lunch? M: At Oscar’s Seafood. W: That’s a good place. The service is excellent, the atmosphere is nice, and it’s not too noisy. Make sure to send them an email about the lunch. Mention the seafood and ask if it is all right. (15) M: OK. And how soon should I get down to business? W: Wait until everyone has looked at the menu and ordered. Spend some time on small talk first. (16) You want to get to know them and let them get to know you. After that, you can bring up what you really want to discuss. (16) Text 10 And finally, the weather for the 25th of May.
