Schools closed and graduation ceremonies were canceled. Summer plans, ‎ 18‎ like camps and internships, are up in the air.‎ But right now, many students are trying to stay connected, struggling with misinformation, and figuring out the best ways they can help through online method.‎ For Josh Harycki, 17, a senior student at the Shipley School in Philadelphia, the best way to contribute was to create a “social distancing pledge” for young people.‎ ‎“I saw a lot of younger generations not paying attention,” he said. “They were still going out, hanging out with people. I thought that there had to be a way to reach younger folks, who were probably not watching the news.”‎ Harycki launched a call to action on social media and then built a website with a map that tracked the locations of people who’d signed the pledge. The site also shares links to accurate sources of information like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.‎ Harycki knows that his peers are worried they can’t connect with their friends in the same way, so he created the social distancing pledge to stress that while everyone might be physically distant, they’re still connected.‎ ‎“Part of what we’re highlighting is that you might feel like you’re the only one taking this seriously, but our map shows that you’re not alone,” he said.‎ ‎24. What do the underlined words “up in the air” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?‎ A. unnatural B. uncertain C. unnecessary D. unreasonable ‎25. Why does the author describe Andrew Chen’s experience in the text?‎ A. To show how the coronavirus affected students’ lives.‎ B. To explain what worried students most when schools closed.‎ C. To illustrate the appropriate reaction to the closure of school.‎ D. To present the different views of students toward the coronavirus.‎ ‎26. Who does Harycki mainly want to reach out to?‎ A. Friends who are worried and bored.‎ B. Folks taking the coronavirus seriously.‎ C. Younger generations trying to contribute to society.‎ D. Young people who are not aware of the situation.‎ ‎27. What’s Harycki’s purpose in creating the “social distancing pledge”?‎ A. To track those people infected with the coronavirus.‎ 18‎ B. To convince young people to stay at home.‎ C. To inform young folks of latest news about the coronavirus.‎ D. To show young people they shouldn’t be concerned about the coronavirus.‎ C Instagram is about to take its biggest step toward removing likes from its platform. After months of testing an option to hide likes in select international markets, Instagram, which is owned by Facebook (FB), has already been testing hiding likes in seven other countries, including Canada, Ireland and Australia. For years, likes have been central to how celebrities, brands, politicians and everyday users experience Instagram and Facebook. It’s a way of measuring popularity and success. But in recent months, Instagram has been rethinking how likes contribute to making its platform more toxic. Now it’s considering a change.‎ The total number of likes on posts – which appear as hearts on the app – will disappear from Instagram’s main feed, profile pages and permalink pages. The owner of the account can still see their own likes, but their followers won’t know the count.‎ CNN Business previously spoke with users in countries with the test. The majority felt this move would improve well-being on the app. Instagram is the most detrimental social networking app for young people’s mental health, such as negatively impacting body image, according to one study.‎ But other users and psychologists said hiding likes won’t fix everything. The test doesn’t address some of the key ways that activity on Instagram can impact the well-being of users, including bullying, feeling left out and thinking other people’s lives are better than their own.‎ Renee Engeln, a psychology professor at Northwestern University, voiced his opinion that the biggest impact of Instagram is the content and the exposure to this constant stream of perfected images is what seems to hurt psychologically. Plus, users can still see their own likes – and feel badly if their posts don’t perform well.‎ ‎28. How do users usually experience Instagram for years?‎ A. By selecting platforms. B. By showing off talents.‎ C. By hiding likes. D. By giving likes. ‎ ‎29. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 3 mean?‎ A. profitable B. popular C. harmful D. positive 18‎ ‎30. What can we infer from the passage?‎ A. Instagram has affected youngsters’ mental health.‎ B. The account owners won’t know the count o£ likes.‎ C. Instagram tested hiding likes in seven countries first.‎ D. The majority think Instagram has been a well-being app.‎ ‎31. What could be the best title of the passage?‎ A. Instagram Misuses Likes B. More People Are Against Likes C. Likes Cause Mental Problems D. Likes will Be Hidden on Instagram D A black hole is created when a large star burns out. Like our sun, stars are unbelievably hot furnaces that burn their own matter as fuel. When most of the fuel is used up, the star begins to die.‎ The death of a star is not a quiet event. First there is a huge explosion. As its outer layer is blasted off into space, the dying star shines as brightly as a billion suns.‎ After the explosion gravity pulls in what’s left of the star. As the outside of the star sinks toward the center, the star gets smaller and smaller. The material the star is made of becomes tightly packed together. A star is so dense that a teaspoon of matter from it weighs billions of pounds.‎ The more the star shrinks, the stronger the gravity inside it becomes. Soon the star is very tiny, and the gravity pulling it in is unbelievably strong. In fact, the gravity is so strong that it even pulls light into the star! Since all the light is pulled in, none can flee. The star becomes black when there is no light. Then a black hole is born!‎ That’s what we know about black holes. What we don’t know is this: What happens inside a black hole after the star has been squeezed into a tiny ball? Does it keep getting smaller and smaller forever? Such a possibility is hard to imagine.‎ But if the black hole doesn’t keep shrinking, what happens to it? Some scientists think black holes are like doorways to another world. They say that as the star disappears from our 18‎ ‎ universe, it goes into another universe. In other words, a black hole in our universe could turn into a “white hole” in a different universe. As the black hole swallows light, the white hole shines brightly – somewhere else. But where? A different place, perhaps, or a different time – many years in the past or future.‎ Could you travel through a black hole? Right now, no. Nothing we know of could go into a black hole without being crushed. So, for the time being, black holes mostly remain a mystery.‎ Black holes are a mystery – but that hasn’t stopped scientists from dreaming about them. One scientist suggested that in the future we might make use of the power of black holes. They would supply all of Earth’s energy needs, with plenty to spare. Another scientist wondered if a black hole could someday be used to swallow earthly waste – a sort of huge waste disposal in the sky!‎ ‎32. When the star begins to die, ________.‎ A. there is no fuel left in it ‎ B. its outer layer goes into space first C. it will explode and then become smaller D. it doesn’t give off light any longer ‎33. Which of the following doesn’t help produce a black hole?‎ A. The star becomes very tiny and dense.‎ B. The light can’t go out of the star.‎ C. The gravity inside the star is very strong.‎ D. The dying star shines very brightly.‎ ‎34. What can we know from the passage?‎ A. A star will blast and die when it lacks fuel to support its burning.‎ B. A black hole can swallow everything because it becomes smaller all the time.‎ C. Man can never travel through a black hole but can make use of its power.‎ D. Scientists have found that a black hole goes into another universe and becomes a white hole.‎ ‎35. What’s the best title for this passage?‎ 18‎ A. A New Scientific Discovery: Black Holes B. How Do Black Holes Come into Being?‎ C. What Are Black Holes?‎ D. These features make us want to take care of them so they can grow up healthily and pass their genes on to the next generation.‎ Looking at baby animals and cartoon characters also cause these feelings. Childlike characteristics make babies sweet and lead us to build close ties with them. 38 ‎ There are several features that can cause this feeling. 39 If a baby animal or human wobbles a bit when walking, that can make them seem even cuter.‎ Of course, we don’t raise baby animals the same way we raise human babies, and we don’t raise cartoon characters at all. 40 Cute cartoon characters become popular this way, and baby animals are more likely to be cared for properly.‎ Think about some of the things that you find cute, and you’re likely to see that they have some of the same characteristics as a human baby.‎ A. This even works when we see things that remind us of a baby.‎ B. The science behind cuteness is still unclear.‎ C. Human babies are a good example.‎ D. However, babies get less cute as they get older. ‎ E. A large round head, large eyes, and soft skin are just some of these features.‎ F. Let’s go together.‎ Text 3‎ W: How was your picnic last week?‎ M: Horrible. The bad weather wrecked it. All our food was washed away by the heavy rain.‎ Text 4‎ W: Hi, Tom. I heard you visited London. Did you have fun?‎ M: Not really. The weather was bad. Are you alone or with a companion?‎ W: I’m going with my daughter. She’s six years old. ‎ M: Oh, the movie is very suitable for her. The overuse of drugs can cause it, or it could be that you’re worried about changes in your life. Those with a family history of mental illness are also more likely to suffer from it. ‎ M: I see. Well, I have started a new job recently, which is causing me a lot of stress. What should I do?‎ W: You should do regular physical exercise. How are your meals? I’ve used it to buy computer software, a phone, and even a camera before, and I’ve been satisfied every single time. Also, I use some other internet shopping sites to buy rare and difficult-to-find records. ‎ W: Have you bought anything online recently?‎ M: Yes. This month, I bought all of my family’s Christmas presents online. I bought my mother a coat, I got my father a golf bag, and just now I ordered a new sofa for my sister.‎ W: Really? Today I’d like to continue our discussion of early American agriculture, moving on from growing crops to raising farm animals. The animals on a typical Massachusetts farm in the early 1800s would look quite different from the ones in the 1980s. In those times, settlers brought cattle and sheep with them to America from various parts of Europe. Sadly, most of the younger animals died because the settlers were busy building houses and planting crops. Hence, they had little time to care for their animals. As the remaining livestock grew, they provided the settlers with meat, milk and wool. All of these were very important to 19th century farming families, as they could be traded for items they couldn’t produce. Nowadays, the survival of farm animals has greatly improved. Feeding is now more selective and specialized: some animals are bred for meat, others for their milk and some for their wool.‎ 18‎
