B Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from the camel’s hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that the cat’s hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush. The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged (蓬乱的). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing. The cat’s lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr.Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings (版画)by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen. In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr.Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy back to Philadelphia for a visit. In the city, Mr.Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape (风景) painting. William Williams , a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said, “Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist. 24. What is the text mainly about? A. Benjamin’s visit to Philadelphia. B. Williams’ influence on Benjamin. C. The beginning of Benjamin’s life as an artist. D. The friendship between Benjamin and Pennington. 25. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 suggest? A. The cat would be closely watched. B. The cat would get some medical care. C. Benjamin would leave his home shortly. D. Benjamin would have real brushes soon. 26. What did Pennington do to help Benjamin develop his talent? A. He took him to see painting exhibitions. B. He provided him with painting materials. C. He sent him to a school in Philadelphia. D. He taught him how to make engravings. 27. Williams’ two books helped Benjamin to ________. A. master the use of paints B. appreciate landscape paintings C. get to know other painters D. make up his mind to be a painter C A newly discovered lizard(蜥蜴)found in the Philippines has made scientists think there might be other never-before-seen creatures on that country’s islands. But scientists say those creatures might never be found because the islands’ rain forests are in danger. The latest lizard was first spotted in 2001 when scientists saw local people of the island catch it for food. Scientist took some pictures of the lizard. Finally scientists caught a lizard themselves to study. They named the new lizard the Northern Sierra Madre forest monitor because it was discovered in the islands’ Sierra Madre Mountains. The 6.6-foot-long lizard has bright yellow markings that distinguish it from more boring-looking monitors. Its legs are mainly yellow, and its tail is black and yellow. So how could scientists work in the Philippines’ rain forests for years without finding the new lizard? They say the Northern Sierra Madre forest monitor is unlike other lizards and their larger cousin, the Komodo dragon. All of those lizards are meat-eaters. But the newfound lizard eats fruit. That means it never has to come down out of the trees. It uniquely colored skin, quiet manner, and treetop home helped it remain hidden from scientists’ view for many years. The discovery of the Northern Sierra Madre forest monitor is marking scientists realize that Philippines’ rain forests may hold many undiscovered species. But those species will not be found if the rain forests keep disappearing. Twenty years ago, forests covered about 35 percent of the Philippines’ land. But people have been encroaching on that land and building on it. Today, forests cover less than 25 percent of the country’s land. 28.What is the scientists’ attitude to finding more new creatures in Philippines’ rain forests? A. Interested. B. Doubtful. C. Excited. D. Supportive. 29.How did scientists discover the new lizard? A. They caught one with the help of locals. B. The locals gave one to scientists as a gift. C. They found it from pictures taken by locals. D. They noticed it when locals hunted the lizard. 30. What is special about the newfound lizard according to Paragraph 3? A. It is a cruel meat-eater. B. It is the largest lizard in Asia. C. It spends most time in trees. D. It looks like Komodo dragons. 31. What does the underlined phrase “encroaching on” mean? A. Invading. B. Protecting. C. Gases, like soot (煤烟), or black carbon, methane (甲烷) and ozone (臭氧) in city smog, are called “short-lived climate pollutants”. Not only do they contribute to climate change, but they can cause ill health. The UN health group also says the pollutants can decrease agricultural crops. These pollutants exist both outdoors and indoors. WHO Environment Chief Maria Neira says the pollutants have a strong effect on climate change. She says the good news is that they only stay in the atmosphere for a few days to 10 years. That is much shorter than carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, which can remain for hundreds, or even thousands of years. “For the fact that they are short-lived pollutants, when you address them, you can reduce emissions (排放物) very rapidly, and then improve air quality as well as slowing the rate of near term climate change. You will have an immediate reduction in the ill-health and diseases caused by the reduction of air pollution,” she says. The WHO has a number of available and affordable ways to lessen these short-lived climate pollutants. At the top of their list: cutting vehicle emissions by requiring higher emissions and efficiency standards. More emissions are released when engines are running. Indoor air pollution also contributes to bad health and early death. The WHO reports that nearly 3 billion low-income households rely on “dirty fuels”. Coal, wood and kerosene used for cooking and heating are examples. They say cleaner and more efficient stove and fuel alternatives could cut down on the health risks. Another way they say to cut back on these pollutants is to have more investments and policies for rapid transport. These include buses, trains, bicycles, or walking routes. They say these investments could have many benefits, including safer travel, reduced health risks from noise and air pollution and more physical activities. The WHO report also calls for encouraging high- and middle-income populations to include more plant-based foods in their diets. It says this could reduce heart disease and some cancers. It could also slow the methane gas production that comes with some animal-sourced foods. 32. Why are some climate pollutants called the “short-lived”? A. They may cause deadly illnesses. B. They will shorten the life of people. C. They won’t remain in the air for long. D. They can change climate in a short time. 33. What do Maria Neira’s words mean about dealing with pollutants? A. It will have a positive effect at once. B. It will take about hundreds of years. C. It will improve the quality of life. D. It will keep air quality good for a few days. 34. Which is strongly recommended by the WHO to reduce short-lived climate pollutants? A. Reducing the use of coal. B. Reducing climate change. C. Controlling vehicle emissions. D. Lowering the methane gas production. 35. What might be the most suitable title for the text? A. Reduce Pollutants from the Air Directly B. Cut Short-lived Pollutants to Save Lives C. Quit Dirty Fuels for Cleaner Air D. It should be simple, human, personal and brief without leaving out any necessary facts. In writing a letter of application, keep in mind that the things a possible employer is most likely to want to know about are your qualifications, your achievements and your aims. 37 If the first few sentences fail to win the reader’s attention, the rest of the letter may not be continued at all. Try to key your opening remarks to the needs or interests of the employer not to your own needs or desires. For example, instead of beginning with “I saw your advertisement in today’s newspaper” you might say “I have made a careful study of your advertising during the past six months” or “I have made a survey in my neighborhood to find out how many housewives use your product and why they like it.” 38 Be clear about the kind of job for which you are now applying. College graduates looking for their first positions often ask what they can provide in a letter and what if employers want experience, which, naturally, no beginner has. 39 . It is important to write a good strong closing paragraph for your letter.Make a specific request for an interview or give the possible employer something definite to do or expect. 40 .
