This has led to a lot of studies comparing their works, which are still important to this day. To mark the 400th anniversary of Tang Xianzu and William Shakespeare’s deaths, an exhibition called Dialogue Across Time and Space: Homage(对···表示敬意) to Tang Xianzu and William Shakespeare is being held across 26 Chinese Cultural Centers in different countries from Sept 1 to December. Shakespeare’s plays are always found in the British school curriculum(课程), while Tang’s best-known opera, The Peony Pavilion(牡丹亭), continues to be performed worldwide. Both were “great men in the circle of world drama”, according to Aoki Masaru, who put the work of Shakespeare and Tang together in his 1943 book A History of Chinese Literary Thought. Both shared a love for a journey of self-discovery. The difference is that Shakespeare’s work shows people of all backgrounds and classes, while Tang’s dramas come from a more aristocratic(贵族的) background. Tang’s lines were sung mostly in family theaters. Shakespeare, however, had to sell tickets to whoever would buy them. That probably affected their writing styles. Though few can touch Shakespeare’s range and richness of work, there is one area in which Tang’s work may have been better. That’s in the use of dreams, not only to tell a story, but also to explore ideas. The Peony Pavilion is set in the world of the characters’ dreams, especially Du Liniang, the young lady who has not seen or gotten to know Liu Mengmei when she falls in love with him. After Liu has dreamed of her, he finds her portrait(肖像画) three years after her death and can’t stop thinking about her. But for Du, a dream is a path to the freedom that young women of ancient China normally didn’t have – the freedom to love someone without their families getting in the way. Shakespeare also famously used the stage to look at Philosophy in A Midsummer Night’s Dream(仲夏夜之梦). But in a sense, the dream was Tang’s stage. 21. We can conclude from the article that______. A. Shakespeare’s works are much more popular among students than people of other age groups B. The difference in their writing styles is rooted in their living environments C. Shakespeare never used the idea of dreams in his dramas D. Tang’s work is more about the lives of the upper class 22. According to the article, dreams in Tang’s work ______. A. represent Tang’s love for freedom B. are only used to express Tang’s support for aristocratic families C. make the characters seem mysterious and interesting D. reflect problems young women in ancient China had to face 23. The writer wrote this article mainly to ______. A. describe studies of Tang Xianzu and William Shakespeare B. make a comparison between Tang Xianzu and William Shakespeare C. explain why Tang Xianzu and William Shakespeare are still famous today D. explore the use of dreams in Tang and Shakespeare’s writings B Scientists claim to have developed a revolutionary new giant 3D concrete printer that can build a 2,500-square-foot house in just 24 hours. The 3D printer, developed by Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis from the University of Southern California, could be used to build a whole house, layer by layer, in a single day. "It is basically scaling up 3D printing to the scale of building," said Khoshnevis. The giant robot replaces construction workers with a nozzle (喷嘴), which can quickly build a home based on a computer pattern, MSN News reported. Contour Crafting, as it is named, is a layered fabrication (构造) technology. Using this process, a single house or a colony of houses, each with possibly a different design, may be constructed in a single run, embedded (嵌入) in each house all the wires and pipes for electrical, plumbing(自来水管道) and air-conditioning. The potential applications of this technology are far-reaching including in emergency, low-income, and commercial housing. "Our research also addresses the application of Contour Crafting in building habitats on other planets. Contour Crafting will most probably be one of the very few feasible(可行的) approaches for building structures on other planets, such as the Moon and Mars, which are being targeted for human habitation before the end of the new century," researchers said on the project website. The technology may potentially reduce energy use and emissions(排放). And the main advantages of the Contour Crafting process over existing technologies are the superior surface finish(抛光剂) that is realized and the greatly increased speed of construction. 24. Professor Khoshnevis has recently developed a 3D printer that can ________. A. build a 2500-square-foot house in a single day. B. construct a skyscraper, layer by layer. C. design a group of houses automatically. D. assist construction workers in their work. 25. The new 3D printer uses the following to build a house EXCEPT ________. A. a nozzle B. a computer pattern C. a robot D. an air-conditioner 26. According to the text, the potential applications of Contour Crafting include building _______. A. emergency vehicles B. low-income housing C. commercial centers D. space stations on other planets 27. What advantages of this new technology is mentioned in the text? A. It creates more jobs. B. It is less time-consuming. C. It saves the building cost. D. It emits no carbon dioxide. C The value of the U.S. penny has been dropping for years. Many countries have stopped using pennies. Is it time for the U.S. to do the same? Those who think we should keep the U.S. penny offer the following arguments to support their positions: Prices will increase. If we get rid of the penny, everything will have to be rounded to the nickel (五分硬币), costing us more for everything we buy. Charities need pennies. There are thousands of small charities that depend on pennies to bring in donations. People think nothing of pouring out their old penny jars to support charity, but they won’t part with(舍弃) nickels so easily. Nickels cost even more to make. If we get rid of the penny, we will need more nickels in circulation. Nickels cost 7.7 cents to make, 2.7 cents over face value, as opposed to 0.26 cents over face value to make a penny. Since the penny costs 0.26 more than face value to make, the Mint (铸币厂) can make 5 pennies and still lose less money than making 1 nickel. People who want to retire the penny also have some persuasive arguments, including these: Pennies waste time. The average American wastes 2.4 hours a year handling pennies, or waiting for people who handle them. This statistics is the result of collecting a number of penny-handling related events, including the 30-second period we sometimes spend waiting for someone who just has to dig through their pockets or purse to find that last cent so they can pay for something with exact change (probably so they don’t get stuck with any more pennies). Making pennies wastes taxpayers’ money. It costs the U.S. Mint 1.26 cents to make each 1 cent coin, meaning that taxpayers are losing 0.26 of a cent for each one of the 7.4 billion pennies the Mint produces each year. History will repeat itself. In 1857, the Mint stopped making the half-cent coin, partly because the cost of making it was considered to be no longer needed. Yet, commerce continued without any catastrophic effects. History has shown us that updating the monetary supply in countries where the currency (货币) is very stable has had little, if any, negative effect on the economy, or on people’s acceptance of the coinage. 28. According to people who want to keep the penny, getting rid of the penny . A. is good for ordinary consumers B. is especially bad for rich people C. will be convenient for them D. may lead to fewer donations to small charities 29. Why do pennies waste time? A. Because consumers don’t always have enough change. B. Because it takes time for people to get them from their pockets or purse. C. Because pennies are not easy to take. D. Because pennies are difficult to collect. 30. The underlined word “catastrophic” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “ ”. A. direct B. positive C. important D. disastrous 31. The text is mainly developed by . A. giving examples B. setting down general rules C. comparing different opinions D. following the natural time order D The typical British employees can expect to spend about £34,000 during their whole working life on the daily costs of being in the office, including tea runs and leaving gifts for colleagues, according to research. A survey of 2,000 office workers across the UK found that the combined cost of Christmas parties and dinners, cards and presents, coffees and teas, sponsorship (赞助) requests, Secret Santa and etc. totaled about £850 a year. Over the course of a 40-year career, that would amount to about £34,000, according to Nationwide Current Account, which carried out the survey. Men generally tend to be unhappier than women about spending money at work, but women are more likely to feel stressed into paying out for work-related items. 42% of men were unhappy about spending money at work Christmas parties, compared with 34% of women. But one in five women said they felt under pressure to spend money at work Christmas parties, compared with just 12% of men. Overall, more than a quarter of people surveyed said they felt pressured when it came to contributing towards birthday and leaving gifts, with 27% of people saying this about gifts for colleagues who were leaving. Nearly 32% said they felt pressured into contributing money to help their colleagues’ charity fund raising efforts. Alan Oliver, Nationwide’s head of external affairs, said, “Working in an office can be an expensive business, especially in big teams. Too many birthdays, retirements and charity fund-raisers can take their toll on our wallets and purses. We would recommend putting in only what you can afford. Developing a regular savings habit can also help in meeting many of future life’s financial challenges.” 32. If a British man works for 30 years, the daily office costs are totally about . A. £25,500 B. £34,000 C. £20,000 D. £40,000 33. Compared with men, women’s reaction to spending money at work Christmas parties is . A. more satisfied B. unhappier C. less concerned D. more stressed 34. What does Alan Oliver advise office workers to do? A. Work in big teams. B. Save money for future use. C. Get along well with colleagues. D. Raise enough money to do charity. 35. What can be the best title for the text? A. The Management of Personal Finance B. Relations Among the UK Office Workers C. Levels of Happiness of the UK Office Workers D. The Daily Cost of the UK Employees in an Office 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 When we think about the dreams we have, it is surprising to see how many people failed even if they could have succeeded. So today I’m going to tell you five ways to kill your dreams. l Believe in overnight success. Everyone knows the story of a tech guy who built a mobile app and sold it for a lot of money. 36 If you investigate further, you will find that he is well educated and has been working on the project for 20 years. Therefore, your overnight success is always a result of what you’ve done in your life. l 37 Constantly, people around you always have opinions on which path you should take. But whichever way you choose, there are other ways you have to pick as well. And one day you need to solve those problems yourself. l Decide to rest when success is guaranteed. When your life is going great and everything is set—time to rest. Actually, when you’re growing towards a peak, you need to work even harder and find yourself another peak. If you were content with what you’ve accomplished, it would stop you from a greater success. 38 l Believe the fault is someone else’s. I constantly see people saying, “I created this great product, but the market is so bad.” If you have dreams, it’s your responsibility to make them happen. Yes, the market may be bad. But if no one bought your product, surely there is something there that is your fault. 39 l Believe that the only things that matter are the dreams themselves. Achieving a dream is a short moment, but your life is not. 40 And the only way to really achieve all of your dreams is to fully enjoy every step of your journey. A. When we face difficulties, believe in ourselves. B. The overnight success inspires so many people. C. The story may seem real, but I bet it’s incomplete. D. Be responsible for your own dreams. E. Life is never about the goals themselves. F. There’s no time to settle down. G. Believe someone else has the answers for you. My husband and I were working as volunteer teachers in a remote village in northern Thailand. Having assessed my strengths and weaknesses, I was determined to take up arts instead of science and enjoyed everything all along.
