Jobs Week: Find Your Next Job Here! D. Introduction to Jobs Week B Jack was born without eyes. He's very lucky with his timing. He grew up having other kittens to play and socialize with, and was used to people from the moment he was born since there are always kids hanging around the barn. He was a favorite amongst the students at the barn. However, when it came time to find the kittens homes, no one knew where Jack would end up. That's when I got an e-mail from my friend. All she asked was “Do you still want one of the kittens? There's one here with no eyes and no one can take him.” Without thinking I told her that I did want the kitten. When we first brought him home Jack walked cautiously around, sniffing everything. He went through a time when he could climb the stairs, but couldn't get down. He would sit at the top and cry until someone came and got him. Every now and then when he gets disoriented he'll stop and cry. But we just call his name and talk to him and it isn't long before he finds his way back to us. Also, a few weeks after getting Jack, we got a new barn cat named Bear. I always take Jack outside at that time for some fresh air and exercise. He loves to run (at top speed!) around the backyard and gardens. Bear and Jack have become best friends. Jack always knows when Bear is around. He'll run across the yard straight to Bear and wrap his front legs around his neck in a big hug. When they're tired they'll lie down in the grass together. Jack is truly an inspiration. I've owned a lot of kittens in my life, but Jack is the happiest, most playful of them all. People who know Jack don't feel sorry for him. They cherish him for the treasure that he is. I have talked to a few people who haven't met him personally and tend to pity him, but they just don't understand. Jack doesn't need pity. I think that cats like him don't have disabilities; they have adaptabilities. 25. According to the first paragraph, Jack ________. A. got seriously disabled after birth B. had a good time in the place where he was born C. ended up wandering in the street at first D. grew up lonely and sad 26. When Jack first came to the author's house, he ________. A. would cry when he felt lonely B. was very happy and played wildly in the room C. had difficulty getting down the stairs D. always needed someone to guide him 27. Which of the following has a similar meaning to the underlined word “disoriented”? A. Hurt. B. Caught. C. Lost. D. Broken. 28. What can we conclude from the last paragraph? A. Jack needs people's pity. B. All disabled cats have strong adaptabilities. C. People always feel sad for Jack. D. Jack's story has inspired people. C Can you remember the first time you learned to ride a bike or drive a car?Learning these skills changed your life forever and opened up new horizons(视野). Learning about computers can be like learning how to ride a bike or drive a car. Once you have invested the time to master the skills, you will never go back to the old days. The new technology is simply too convenient and too powerful. Technological developments through the years have enabled us to do more with less effort. We have continuously looked for better ways of doing things. Each invention and new development has allowed us to extend our capabilities. Today we see one of the most dramatic technologies ever developed—the computer. It extends the capabilities of our minds. Computers have saved organizations millions of dollars. Furthermore, these same computer systems have opened up new opportunities that would have gone undiscovered or neglected(忽视). The computer may multiply what we can do, and the return on investment is high. The growth of computer usage is surprising. On the other hand, the computer can do serious damage. Invasion of privacy(侵犯隐私),fraud(欺诈),and computer-related mistakes are just a few shocking examples. The computer is like a double-edged sword. It has the ability to cut us free from some activities, but it can also cut deep into profits, personal privacy, and our society in general. How it is used is not a function of technology. It is strictly a function of how people decide to use or misuse this new technology. The choice is yours, and only through a knowledge of computer systems will you be able to avoid the dangers while enjoying the many, many benefits of the computer age. 29. The writer thinks learning about computers is like learning how to ride a bike or drive a car because ________. A. it is simple and practical B. it needs a lot of practice C. it leads people to new life experiences D. it takes much time to master the skills 30. According to the passage, computers bring people the following benefits except ________. A. avoiding mistakes B. saving money C. making money D. opening up opportunities 31. This passage is probably written for ________. A. computer teachers B. computer producers C. computer learners D. computer programmers D People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have a lifespan(寿命) that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years. Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago, US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors(肿瘤) developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy. According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improved the animal's sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors. “An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals,” the study author Dr Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass. This_phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named “Peto's paradox(悖论)”. Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not. In the elephant's case, the making of TP53 is nature's way of keeping this species alive. The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancers spreading or even developing in the first place. “Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at the School of Medicine, University of Utah, US. “It's up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.” 32. Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer? A. They have a rather large body size. B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage. C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors. D. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing. 33. According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals? A. Deadly tumors. B. The huge body mass. C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage. 34. What does the underlined part “This phenomenon” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to? A. Larger animals have protection from TP53. B. The risk of cancer is not related to body size. C. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones. D. The larger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have. 35. What can be concluded from the passage? A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer. B. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people. C. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53. D. The extra copies of elephants' genes are used to cure cancer patients. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. Located in the western suburbs of Chengdu, the spot is marked by a stream, ancient architecture and age-old trees. Du Fu was talented. When he was young he wanted to get a good job in the government. Unfortunately, he was rejected several times. He was in his fifties when he began to serve as a minor official in Chang'an (Xi'an). Du Fu was not a skilled survivor in government politics. He was dismissed in the form of a transfer to the post of personnel administrator in Huazhou. Du Fu soon gave up this minor post in disgust and set off with his family to Qinzhou in the northwest. After a short stay he moved on again, and in 759 he arrived in Chengdu. He set up a modest cottage with some money that he borrowed from a friend who served as a local governor. I have done some research. I went online and to the library to find as much information as possible about food from cloned animals. On a personal note, I am not for the plan. The reasons why I hold this view are as follows. First of all, I agree that the most important thing is that, since cloning is quite a new scientific technology, no one knows whether food from cloned animals is safe for people to eat, especially in the long term. What’s more, cloning is not very cheap at present, so most people will not be able to afford to buy food from cloned animals in supermarkets. Last but not least, I think such food will not taste as delicious as normal food. In summary, I insist that you not sell food from cloned animals in your supermarket. Or, at least, you should sell both normal food and food from cloned animals, so customers can choose as they want. Yours sincerely, Li Hua查看更多
