Chris Lewis D. Liz Payne B Samuel Osmond is a 19-year-old law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲)by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.‎ Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable. They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn’t even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.‎ Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me ---I hear the notes and can bear them in mind---each and every note,” says Samuel.‎ Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can’t play it. Samuel says confidently,” It’s all about super memory---I guess I have that gift.”‎ However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn’t stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.‎ Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies.‎ ‎4. What is special about Samuel Osmond?‎ A. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider-story” is often told. Robert Bruce, the leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web. The spider tried to ‎ reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times to span(跨过) the gap. On the seventh time he made it and went on to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone to defeat the English. Edison, the inventor of the light bulb(灯泡), made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make a new type of battery when he had failed so often, he replied, “Failure? I have no failure. Now I know 50 000 ways it won’t work.”‎ So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top form yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?‎ Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question: “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?” This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway.‎ The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to live with yourself, even though you maybe have failed.‎ ‎8. This passage deals with _______.‎ A. failure and success B. two sides of failure C. the “spider-story” D. the invention of light bulb ‎9. Robert Bruce is put in the passage to show that _______.‎ A. failure must come before success ‎ B. nature will help us if we let it C. people who fail have plenty of companies D. we should face failure directly and overcome difficulties ‎10. The thing the writer does NOT tell you to do to deal with failure is to _______.‎ A. check out your goals to see if they are right for you B. avoid things that are beyond you C. think about failure as part of your life D. think about failure to find out what went wrong 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” It applies when you meet someone new. 11 Here are several tips to help you out.‎ Always dress to impress.‎ They say dress for the job you want, not the job you have. If you’re aiming for that senior management position, then create a good impression by wearing a suit and tie if you’re a man. Women should wear an interview- appropriate blouse and skirt or pants. Clean nails are important. 12 It’s an interview, not a party.‎ Be on time.‎ ‎13 If you are going to run late, then might as well not show up at all. Always come 10 to 15 minutes early and this time to mentally prepare yourself for the interview one last time.‎ Shake hands firmly.‎ Always shake the hand of your interviewer after the initial (最初的)greeting is exchanged. If the interviewer doesn’t extend his hand, extend yours anyway. 14 Just make sure you keep a tissue(至今) in your pocket, in case you need to wipe your damp hands if you’re a bit nervous.‎ ‎15‎ Before going to the job interview do your research about the company’s background. Find out the most you can about the company’s history, policy and goals, and by all means research about the job position you’re applying for.‎ Job interviews can be very stressful exercises. If you want to get the job, that starts with a good first interview. Good luck!‎ A. Ask questions.‎ B. Do your research.‎ C. It’s a sign of goodwill.‎ D. Well, the same applies to job interviews.‎ E. Oh, and keep jewelry and perfumes(香水) to a minimum.‎ F. It also shows how nervous you are about the entire thing.‎ G.
