She lives on the other side of the world, and I went to visit her, not wanting to leave and feeling like I was leaving home against my will. However, I wanted to show her my support because she is my only sister.‎ ‎  So I boarded the plane in mid-August, and hated the long flight. I arrived, tired and hungry. I had left my husband of 2 years, alone, in our old New Orleans house.‎ ‎  I was all set and ready to perform for my sister for the music festival on Sunday morning when I received a call from Chicago. The hurricane was predicted to hit our city, and many people had already evacuated, but my husband chose to stay behind. He could not get a call to me on the other side of the world, but he could call his cousin in Chicago. He gave his cousin a message for me, that he would be just fine, and not to worry.‎ ‎  As the day wore on, I finally took the stage in front of hundreds of Europeans, and I realized, thanks to CNN, that New Orleans was under water.‎ ‎  I performed, hoping that my husband would survive. And I performed perfectly. The audience stood and applauded. I left the stage and went straight to the TV. I saw the street sign near my home, of Humanity Street, but nothing below it, except water.‎ ‎  In the days that followed, I found out that my house, my car, my clothes, my furniture, everything that I’d left behind was gone…but not my husband. He survived by riding on the rear bumper(后保险杠)of a VW bus, holding on to the overhead luggage rack, in the pouring rain, down the highway from New Orleans, half-way to Baton Rouge. The rest of the journey was a long walk, but he survived.‎ ‎  By the first week of September, I flew back to the Baton Rouge airport, and hugged my husband. Since then, our relationship has grown deeper; we have completely rebuilt our house, bought a new car, bought new furniture and new clothes and joined an inspirational, spirit-filled community. ‎ ‎21. Why did the author leave home? ‎ ‎  A. To look after her sister.                             B. To attend a music festival.       ‎ ‎  C. To watch a performance.                      D. To visit her husband’s cousin. ‎ ‎22. How did the author feel when she left home? ‎ ‎  A. Disappointed.              B. Worried.                C. Tired.             D. Unwilling. ‎ ‎23. What might be the title for the passage? ‎ ‎  A. Lost it All, Gained Even More B. Once Gone, Never Returned ‎ ‎ C. Caught in the Hurricane D. Trapped in a Dilemma ‎ B Being physically active three times a week reduces the odds of being depressed by about 16%, according to new UCL research carried out as part of the Public Health Research Center.‎ The study, published in JAMA Psychiatry, found a two-way relationship between depression and physical activity. People who increased their weekly activity reported fewer depressive symptoms but those with more depressive symptoms were less active, particularly at younger ages.‎ Researchers followed 11,135 people born in 1958 up until the age of 50, recording depressive symptoms and levels of physical activity at regular intervals in adulthood. They found that each additional activity period per week reduced odds of depression by 6%. In England 19% of men and 26% of women are currently classed as “inactive”, and this study suggests that activity could significantly improve their mental as well as physical health.‎ ‎“Assuming the association is causal, physical activity has a protective effect against depression. If an adult between their twenties and forties who isn’t physically active became active 3 times per week, they would reduce their risks of depression by about 16%.” says Dr.‎ ‎ Snehal of the UCL Institute of Child Health, lead author of the study.‎ Professor Mark, Director of the Public Health Research Center, said, “Many people are already aware of the benefits of physical activity on their general health, but now we are seeing more evidence that suggest it also has a positive effect on a person’s mental well-being. The latest research highlights just how important it is to ensure that people are working and living in environments that allow them to be both physically active and mentally healthy.”‎ ‎25. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?‎ ‎ A. To tell us a fun story about how to protect us against depression.‎ ‎ B. To introduce a research on the link between activity and depression.‎ ‎ C. To persuade readers to increase their weekly activity.‎ ‎ D. To describe the disadvantages of physical activity.‎ ‎ 26. According to the second paragraph, if people increase their weekly activity, ______. ‎ ‎ A.their depressive symptoms will be fewer ‎ ‎ B. their depressive symptoms will be more ‎ C. they will become much younger ‎ D. they will become more depressive ‎27. Increasing physical activities can free people from depression in a way.‎ ‎28. The author shows his view mainly by_______.‎ ‎ A. doing research B. comparing and contrasting ‎ ‎ C. trying on himself D. discussing and summarizing C Scientists in Britain have managed to teach bumblebees (大黄蜂)to pull strings to get to food and then pass on what they have learned to others in their colony (群体)一showing a high level of intelligence despite their tiny brains.‎ Researchers at Queen Mary University of London said the experiments, often used to test the intelligence of apes (猿)and birds, showed for the first time that some insects are up to the task, and can also pass skills on through several generations.‎ The findings add to the evidence suggesting the ability for “culture spread” 一 the ability to learn and pass on knowledge and skills — may not be exclusive to humans.‎ In the research, published in the journal PLOS Biology on Tuesday, the scientists were able to train 23 out of a group of 40 bees to pull strings with their legs and feet.‎ The strings were attached to discs — or artificial “flowers” 一 containing food at their center but placed under a transparent screen. The bees, spotting the food beneath the screen, learned to pull the “flowers” out by pulling the string with their legs and feet to be able to get to it.‎ From another group of bees given the chance to solve the task without any training, only two of 110 were successful.‎ Another group of bees was then allowed to observe the trained bees pulling the strings, and 60 percent of them successfully learned the skill. Finally, trained bees were put in colonies, and the scientists found the technique spread successfully to a majority of the colony’s worker bees.‎ Lars Chittka, a Queen Mary University professor who guided the project, said the team is ‎ interested in figuring out the brain processes behind the bees’ learning and teaching skills.‎ ‎29. What does the underlined word “exclusive” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?‎ A. unique. B. ordinary. C. widespread. D. beneficial.‎ ‎30. What did the researchers find about bees?‎ A. Bees are as clever as birds. B. Bees learn best in insects.‎ C. Bees can be trained to learn skills. D. Bees are born good learners.‎ ‎31. What may the research team focus on next?‎ A. Where bees learn skills. B. What else bees can do.‎ C. How bees’ brain work. D. How bees teach others. ‎ ‎32. What may be the best title for the text?‎ A. Bees can learn and teach B. Small bees, great abilities ‎ C. Let bees learn D. Bees are smarter ‎ D In her new book, “The Smartest Kids in the World,” Amanda Ripley, an investigative journalist, tells the story of Tom, a high-school student from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, who decides to spend his senior year in Warsaw, Poland. Poland is a surprising educational success story: in the past decade, the country raised students’ test scores from significantly below average to well above it. Polish kids have now outscored(超过……分数) American kids in math and science, even though Poland spends, on average, less than half as much per student as the United States does. One of the most striking differences between the high school Tom attended in Gettysburg and the one he ends up at in Warsaw is that the latter has no football team, or, for that matter, teams of any kind.‎ That American high schools waste more time and money on sports than on math is an old complaint. This is not a matter of how any given student who plays sports does in school, but of the culture and its priorities. This December, when the latest Program for International Student Assessment(PISA) results are announced, it’s safe to predict that American high-school students will once again display their limited skills in math and reading, outscored not just by students in Poland but also by students in places like South Korea, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, and Japan. Meanwhile, they will have played some very exciting football games, which will have been breathlessly written up in their hometown papers. ‎ Why does this situation continue? Well, for one thing, kids like it. And for another, according to Ripley, parents seem to like the arrangement, too. She describes a tour she took of a school in Washington D.C., which costs thirty thousand dollars a year. The tour leader—a mother with three children in the school—was asked about the school’s flaws(暇疵). When she said that the math program was weak, none of the parents taking the tour reacted. When she said that the football program was weak, the parents suddenly became concerned. “Really?” one of them asked worriedly, “What do you mean?”‎ One of the ironies(讽刺) of the situation is that sports reveal what is possible. American kids’ performance on the field shows just how well they can do when expectations are high. It’s too bad that their test scores show the same thing. ‎ ‎33. According to Paragraph 2, we know that _______.‎ ‎ A. too much importance is placed on sports in America ‎ ‎ B. little time is spent on sports in Japanese schools ‎ C. American high schools complain about sports time ‎ D. PISA plays a very important role in America ‎34. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means _______.‎ ‎ A. American students’ academic performance worries their parents a lot ‎ ‎ B. high expectations push up American students’ academic performance ‎ ‎ C. low expectations result in American students’ poor PISA performance ‎ ‎ D. lacking practice contributes to American students’ average performance ‎35. The purpose of this article is to _______.‎ ‎ A. draw public attention to a weakness in American school tradition ‎ ‎ B. call on American schools to learn from the Polish model ‎ C. compare Polish schools with those in America ‎ D. explain what is wrong with American schools and provide solutions ‎ 第二节 ‎(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ You’d think the human race would have understood sleeping very well by now, but many of us are still sleeping poorly.
