C My love for dogs goes as far back as my first memory. As a little girl, I collected dog toys. At 5 years old, I was ready and willing to run away with the family dog after the threat of giving him away when he chewed up the sofa. Luckily he stayed and my affection for man's best friend continued. As an adult, my reasons for wanting to adopt a dog were purely selfish. I wanted a companion. I wanted a young, energetic dog that would need long walks or runs to help keep me active to stick to an exercise routine. Little did I know that my four-legged friend and love for dogs would help me feel more at home in and fall in love with my Shanghai community. It seemed to me that being a tall blonde didn't already attract a lot of curious stares; add a 12-kilogram black dog that believes everyone is his best friend to the picture and locals seem even more intrigued. The decision to adopt Xiao Hei definitely fulfilled those early selfish desires, but the experience has also brought me closer to my neighbors and made me feel more at home,. A few months after I first brought Xiao Hei home, I spotted the group of elderly Chinese people who gather at the park. After realizing they go there most weeknights, I decided it would be a good way to help Xiao Hei socialize with other dogs. After a few visits, it was not only an opportunity for him to play but also a chance for me to practice my Chinese. "Most Chinese give their dogs English names, but you've given him a Chinese name. Very interesting," they laughed. With that simple laugh, it seemed that barriers were broken and with each visit I felt more a part of the community. 28. Why did the author want to adopt a dog? A. To practice Chinese. B. To understand Chinese culture. C. To find a companion. D. To feel at home. 29. Who is likely to be the author of the text? A. A Shanghai native. B. A Chinese dog lover. C. A researcher on Chinese culture. D. A foreigner in Shanghai. 30. The underlined word “intrigued” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________. A. excited B. interested C. satisfied D. frightened 31. What can be inferred from the text? A. The author gets along well with her neighbors. B. The author once left home with her dog. C. The author is good at the Chinese language. D. The author will settle in Shanghai forever. D Some plants get so hungry that they eat flies, and even small frogs. What's more amazing is that these plants occur naturally (in special environments) in every state. In fact, they're found on every continent except Antarctica. You've probably seen a Venus' flytrap -- a small plant, which grows 6 to 8 inches tall in a container. At the end of its stalks (茎) are leaves that act like traps (陷阱). Inside each trap is a lining of tiny hairs. When an insect lands on them, the traps suddenly shut. Over the course of a week or so, the plant feeds on its catch. The Venus' flytrap is just one of more than 500 species of meat-eating plants, says Barry Meyers-Rice, the editor of the International Carnivorous Plant Society's Newsletter. He states although you might have read some science-fiction stories, no meat-eating plant does any danger to humans. Barry says a plant is meat-eating, only if it does all four of the following: "attract, kill, digest, and absorb" some form of insects. Meat-eating plants look and act like other green plants -- well, most of the time. All green plants make sugar to produce food. What makes meat-eating plants different is their special leaves, which need insects for one reason: nitrogen (氮). Nitrogen is a nutrient that they can't obtain any other way. Why? Almost all green plants on our planet get nitrogen from the soil. Meat-eating plants can't. They live in places where nutrients are hard to get from the soil because of its acidity. So they've come to rely on getting nitrogen from insects and small animals. In fact, nutrient-rich soil is poisonous to meat-eating plants. Never fertilize (施肥) them! But don't worry, either, if they never seem to catch any insects. They can survive, but they'll grow very slowly. 32. According to the passage, a Venus' flytrap ______. A.is a small plant which grows in a container B.is a kind of plant which gets hungry easily C.can only grow 6-8 inches tall D. can trap and feed on some form of insects 33. From the passage, we can infer that ______. A.meat-eating plants are found nowhere else except Antarctica B.all green plants get nitrogen from the soil C.meat-eating plants endanger humans in science-fiction stories D.the nutrient-poor soil is beneficial to meat-eating plants 34. Meat-eating plants grow very slowly, ______. A.so you'd better fertilize them B.simply because they can't absorb nitrogen from the soil C. probably because the supply of nitrogen is cut off D.and then they will die slowly 35. Which of the following is true? A.Meat-eating plants look and act like other green plants. B.The Venus' flytrap eats flies to get nutrient from them. C. It's hard for plants to get nutrients in the soil when acidity is high. D.Green plants make sugar at night. 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Get Your Children to Listen Children know when to tune out (不理会) their parents. If I were you, I would consider a bike as a birthday present for him. As far as I know, Peter is always in poor health so he can take more exercise by riding a bike to build up his body. In the meanwhile, you can often go outing by bike together, which is helpful to rebuild your friendship. Besides, taking a bike is an environmentally friendly means of transport. It's convenient for him to get around as well. Apart from giving him a gift, you can also adopt other means, such as traveling, seeing a movie, having dinner and going shopping.
