More than 40% of insect species are declining and a third are endangered, the analysis found. The rate of extinction is eight times faster than that of mammals, birds and reptiles. “It should be of huge concern to all of us, for insects are at the heart of every food web. They pollinate the large majority of plant species, keep the soil healthy, recycle nutrients, control pests, and much more. Love them or loathe them, we humans cannot survive without insects, ” said Prof Dave Goulson at the University of Sussex in the UK. The analysis, published in the journal Biological Conservation, says intensive agriculture is the main drive of the decline, particularly the heavy use of pesticides. Urbanization and climate change are also significant factors. One of the biggest impacts of insect loss is on the many birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish that eat insects. A small number of adaptable species are increasing in number, but not nearly enough to outweigh the big losses. Matt Shardlow, at the conservation charity Buglife, said, “It is gravely sobering to see this collation of evidence that demonstrates the pitiful state of the world’s insect populations. It is increasingly obvious that the planet’s ecology is breaking and there is a need for an intense and global effort to stop and reverse these dreadful trends.” ( )24.What does “are hurtling down ” underlined mean? A. To climb very slow in a straight direction. B. To move very fast in a particular direction. C. To become lower in value or level quickly. D. To speed up suddenly in a particular direction. ( )25.According to the passage, ________ doesn’t cause the decline of the insects. A. by giving the examples B. by making the comparison C. by giving the definition D. by making the explanation ( )27.What is the main idea of the text? A. Sharply decreasing insects numbers threaten the damage of nature. B. The impacts will be brought by the insect loss. C. The effective measures are taken to stop the scary trends. D. The leading factors that cause insects decline. C Being able to count at least ten people as friends makes us happy, but those with five or fewer are likely to be miserable, researchers say. Their study of hundreds of men and women also found that people who feel satisfied with their lives always have lots of close friends and regularly make new ones. While it is not clear whether our friends make us happy or we make friends because we are happy, the researchers say it is clear that we should maintain our friendships. Psychologist Richard Tunney said, “Whatever the reason is, actively working on friendships in the same way as to maintain a marriage is a prerequisite (必备条件) to happiness.” Dr. Tunney, of Nottingham University, quizzed(询问)more than 1,700 people about their satisfaction with their lives and the state of their friendships. Those with five friends or fewer had just a 40 percent chance of being happy. In other words, they were more likely to be unhappy than happy. Ten was the first number at which people were more likely to be happy than unhappy. The happiest people were those with dozens of friends, according to the study, which was carried out for the National Lottery (彩票). For women, this meant having 33 friends; for men, the number was 49. Dr. Tunney said, “People who were extremely satisfied with their lives had twice the number of friends of people who were extremely dissatisfied.” Women tended to have fewer friends than men but formed tighter relationships. Interestingly, the study found that childhood friends are no more likely to make us happy than people we become close to later in life. Lottery winners, however, have a different opinion on life. They are always happier than others despite spending their time with a small circle of old friends. This could be because they trust people they’ve known for a long time. ( )28. What’s the best title for this passage? A. The Secret to Happiness Is to Make New Friends. B. Having at Least 10 Good Friends Makes People Happy. C. Why Most People Like to Make Friends Regularly. D. Men’s and Women’s Friends Are Different. ( )29. Which of the following opinions may Richard Tunney NOT agree with? A. People with few friends are sure to be unhappy. B. Our friends can make us happy. C. Happiness may come from a good marriage life. D. We may become happier if we have more friends. ( )30. According to the passage, lottery winners ________. A. enjoy making new friends B. make new friends easily C. like staying with old friends D. have no time to make friends ( )31. We can conclude from the passage that ________. A. it’s enough for one person to have ten friends B. unhappy people must have few friends C. childhood friends make people happier than adulthood ones D. friendships play a major role in people’s life D Babies’ main food is rice cereal. But it is often poisoned. Studies have found that many brands contain measurable amounts of inorganic arsenic(无机砷). An August 2018 study tested 50 foods made for babies, including organic and inorganic brands such as Gerber, Earth’s Best, and other popular labels, and found evidence of at least one dangerous heavy metal in every product. Fifteen of the 50 contained enough contaminants(污染物)to pose potential health risks to a child eating one serving or less a day. Heavy metals can damage cognitive(认知的)development in children. Inorganic arsenic in drinking water has been found to lower the IQ scores of children. As heavy metals accumulate in the body over time, they can raise the risk of cancer, diabetes and other physical conditions. Of course, finding that your favorite brand is contaminated is not a reason to panic. Low levels of exposure for short periods are unlikely to cause serious effects, but parents should focus on reducing the overall levels of these poisonous substances in their children’s total diet to limit harm. Heavy metals occur naturally on Earth and are present in soil and water. But pesticides(杀虫剂), mining and pollution increase their concentrations, and farming and food manufacturing processes can contribute even more. Food makers are aware of keeping baby food poison-free: roughly a third of the tested products did not contain worrisome metal levels. Some companies are already trying to look into the sources of contamination in their products and try to reduce them. More companies should follow. But the best chance of real change will come with laws. Currently there are no US rules on acceptable levels of heavy metals in baby foods. The government and the food industry should unite to deal with the serious threat to our children. ( )32. What did the August 2018 study find? A. Fifteen of the 50 food brands contained contaminants. B. All organic food brands contained some inorganic arsenic. C. Earth’s Best proved to be a poison-free baby food brand. D. All tested products were contaminated with heavy metals. ( )33. According to the second paragraph, inorganic arsenic in drinking water has a bad effect on children’s_____. A. intelligence B. behavior C. sight D. emotion ( )34. In the fourth paragraph, the writer indicates that_____. A. food storage is a major source of metal contamination in the food products B. many food makers haven’t taken enough safety steps to reduce metal levels C. food makers should figure out the sources of contamination in their products D. food companies must be banned from producing foods containing heavy metals ( )35. According to the writer, which of the following is the vital step to make a real difference to the worrying situation? A. Stepping up baby food tests. B. Listing harmful heavy metals. C. Making out relevant regulations. D. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 听力文本 Text 1 M: I heard you’re taking a trip to China. Are you going there to spend a holiday with your family? W: No. My boss will go to an exhibition. He doesn’t speak Chinese. Text 2 M: Excuse me, but could you tell me how to get to the Red Sea Cafe, please? W: Sorry, but I’m just seeing around the city here. You can try to find it on the city map, if you like. M: Thanks. I hope that’ll help. Text 3 M: I saw Ted leave just now. He didn’t look happy. W: He wanted to borrow my car, but I told him it’s in the garage for repairs. M: But didn’t you just use it? W: Yes. I guess he saw it when I drove home. Text 4 W: How did you know the engineer Dave in my company? Do you live in the same neighbourhood? M: No, I met Dave at university. He was the leader of the student union at the time. Text 5 W: It seems you really like sandwiches and sodas. M: Well, I don’t really like sandwiches. I just don’t have time to cook. I know I’m not eating healthy. W: You can try to eat healthier. Eat more vegetables and fruit and replace sodas with water. Text 6 M: I don’t think I’ve seen you before. Are you visiting someone here? W: No. I moved to this neighborhood just a couple of days ago. M: ⑥Then do you know anyone in the neighborhood? W: ⑥Not really. And I don’t know how to get to know others. M: It’s easy. Just try to become part of the community. You can find those things that are connected with you whether it’s volunteering or finding a new job or getting involved with your child’s school. W: Thanks for your advice. So have you lived here for long? M: Not really. ⑦I’ve lived here for just about half a year. Text 7 W: James, can you believe that the average temperature today is a full one degree Celsius higher than it was in 1850. M: One degree Celsius higher? It doesn’t sound like a big deal. W: Many people think so. ⑧But planet-wide, this small rise in temperature has had big effects. M: Could you give me some examples? W: For example, that extra energy has caused weather patterns to change. Some forms of destructive weather, such as droughts and floods, have become more common or extreme. M: I guess you’re right. W: ⑨Is there anything we can do in our daily life to prevent the trend? M: ⑨Of course. We can… Text 8 W: David, it seems your son really loves playing football. M: Yes. He’s really crazy about it. (10)And I’m really worried about his safety. I am afraid that he might get serious brain damage if he plays football for long. You know, football players like kicking the ball with their heads. W: That’s true. But I don’t think you should worry too much. M: Why? W: (11)I read a paper in a medical magazine yesterday. It was about the findings of a study on brain damage of football players. M: What does it say? W: Well, the researchers scanned the brains of some retired football players and also gave them some tests. Their findings show that the retired football players didn’t have serious brain damage at all. M: (12)What a relief! W: Yes. And I think you should let your son do what he really loves! M: I will. (12)Thank you for telling me about the study. Text 9 M: I’m very pleased to have Lily Alonso with me, and I’ll be asking her about how she prepares for a concert. Lily, do you have any way of making yourself feel relaxed before a concert? W: In my early days I was in a band and we were always telling each other jokes and having a good laugh. (13)But now I spend a few minutes taking calm, slow breaths. M: And on the day of the show, do you practise everything on the stage first? W: (14)I always go there but just to get the feel of moving around it, making a mental note of how many steps I can take in any direction. I want songs to sound fresh when I do them, but they won’t be fresh to you if you’ve been singing them all day. M: What do you do after that? W: I often go and take a seat in one of the front rows. (15)I try to imagine myself up there later on, giving a really great performance, fans clapping and cheering, things like that. Whether or not that actually happens it certainly makes me feel I can do it, and that’s the important thing. Then I go back to my dressing room, which is usually nice and quiet, and get ready. M: And one final question, what do you drink before you perform? W: Well, coffee is not good for your voice because it dries out your mouth and throat. Tea and cola are also best avoided. (16)But your throat can be cleared by having a glass of freshly-squeezed(鲜榨的) lemon or orange. M: Thank you, Lily. And good luck with your next tour. W: Thanks. Text 10 W: Good evening, everyone. Summer is very close now. (20)So in tonight’s program, I’d like to introduce two water parks in the city. The first is Golfland Sunsplash Water Park.
