Some people believe that they can’t help putting on weight as they get older, while others hold that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some more myths: I’ll never lose weight—I come from a fat family. Wrong! Though we can’t change the body type we are born with, we can’t blame our genes(基因) for making us fat. There’s plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason is that they share the same habits of eating too much and exercising too little. I am fat because I burn calories slowly. Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism (新陈代谢). In fact, although fat people consume more energy than slim people, they also fail to realize how much they eat! Keeping a diary can help you work out your daily food intake more accurately. Exercise is boring. Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it repetitively (重复地). The key is to develop a balanced and varied(变化的) program that’s fun as well as progressive. If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different route. If you do yoga, try a Tai Chi class. If you like swimming, set yourself a distance or time challenge. No pain, no gain. Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something’s wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. You may experience mild discomfort as you begin to exercise regularly, but this is your body adapting to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear relatively quickly. If they don’t, rest and seek medical advice. 21. According to the author, how can we make exercise more interesting? A. By taking varied exercise. B. By choosing simple exercise. C. By doing regular exercise. D. By sticking to outdoor exercise. 22. What is the author’s opinion about “No pain, no gain” in exercising? A. Keeping fit is essentially a painful experience. B. Exercise should be stopped if continuous pain is felt. C. Pain in exercise is a precondition for reaching your goal. D. Getting used to pain leads to positive changes in your body. 23. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To declare the importance of keeping fit. B. To clarify(阐明)some misunderstanding about fatness and exercise. C. To confirm what has long been believed about keeping fit. D. To explain some medical facts about being fat and doing exercise. B It was Monday. Mrs Smith’s dog was hungry, but there was not any meat in the house. Considering that there was no better way, Mrs Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the following words on it, “Give my dog half a pound of meat” Then she gave the paper to her dog and said gently, “Take this to the butcher(肉店), and he’s going to give you your lunch today.” Holding the piece of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher’s shop. It gave the paper to the butcher. The butcher read it carefully, recognized that it was really the lady’s handwriting and pleasantly did as he was asked to. The dog was very happy, and ate the meat up immediately. At midday, the dog came to the shop again. It gave the butcher a piece of paper again. After reading it, he gave it half a pound of meat once more. The next day, the dog came again exactly at midday. And as usual, it brought a piece of paper in the mouth. This time, the butcher did not take a look at the paper, and gave the dog its meat, for he had thought of the dog as one of his customers. However, the dog came again at four o’clock. And the same thing happened once again. To the butcher’s more surprise, it came for the third time at six o’clock, and brought with it a third piece of paper. The butcher felt a bit puzzled. He said to himself, “This is a small dog. Why does Mrs Smith give it so much meat to eat today?” Looking at the piece of paper, he found that there were not any words on it! 24.When Mrs Smith’s dog was hungry, what did she give to the dog? A. Some chicken. B. Half a pound of meat. C. A hot dog. D. A piece of paper with some words on it. 25. Mrs Smith treated her little dog quite _______. A. cruelly B. fairly C. kindly D. unfriendly 26. From its experience, the dog found that _______. A. only the paper with Mrs Smith’s words on it could bring it meat B. a piece of paper could bring it half a pound of meat C. the butcher would give the meat to it whenever he saw it D. Mrs Smith would pay for the meat it got from the butcher 27. At the end of the story, you’ll find that_________. A. the dog was clever enough to write on the paper B. the dog dared not go to the butcher’s any more C. the butcher was told not to give any meat to the dog D. the butcher found himself cheated by the clever animal C Open water swimming I had only swum in open water a few times, and always in gentle warm lakes, so I wasn’t prepared for the rough Lake Windermere on a cold day. A swimmer told me the water felt colder than expected, and that the water was a bit rough. But I, along with 10,000 other swimmers, was about to finish the challenge. Most of the swimmers taking part were doing a one-mile race, and 10 races were planned over the weekend. There seemed to be a mix of open-water enthusiasts with complete beginners—which is the aim of the swims, to get as many people as possible completing their own challenge. The oldest woman was 77, taking part in the two-mile race, alongside a man who last year had swum in every one-mile race. I had chosen the third one-mile race of the day. There were over 600 people in my race. We were taken through a children’s paddling pool-sized part of the lake where we moved in to feel how cold the water was. “Not too bad” was everyone’s thought! Then we headed (朝向)out towards the middle of the lake. We’d been warned that the first 100 metres would be really rough. However, somewhere near the 750m mark I was still waiting for the calm; it felt more like swimming in the sea than a lake. I tried to focus on my breathing and technique, and just keep going. As I approached the 400m-to-go mark,my lower right leg became painful. I recalled overhearing people talking about how they kept swimming through the pain, so I tried. But it didn’t work. I began to feel the entire leg tight and painful. I didn’t want to stop, so I bent my right knee and just kicked with the left leg. Finally I saw the finishing post(终点位子), and I just concentrated on getting there—still one-legged. My finishing time was 38 minutes 25 seconds but that didn’t matter—the atmosphere was fantastic and everyone felt a sense of achievement, whatever their time. I’m amazed and interested, and want to give it another go. I’ve been ready for my next open-water swim. 28. How did the author feel before the race? A. Scared of the most challenging race. B. Disappointed by the difficult conditions. C. Concerned about the other swimmers in the race. D. Determined to be as tough as the people around her. 29. Why does the author mention the two people in Paragraph 2? A. To stress the importance of the race. B. To praise the experienced swimmers. C. To show the wide range of the participants. D. To introduce the various events of the race. 31. The author suggests in Paragraph 4 that ______. A. the race would cause breathing problems B. the race became harder than she had expected C. it was really necessary to prepare for tough swims D. it would have been easier if she had taken others’ advice 31. What does the author talk about in the last paragraph? A. Her confidence in her own ability. B. Her pride in having swum so quickly. C. Her eagerness(急切)to repeat the experience. D. Her surprise at having managed to finish. D “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Similarly, if we drink a little more water every day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor a lot less often. A healthy diet is made up of water and a great many different kinds of foods. We know that healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and fish, are important as they provide us with energy and fiber, without giving us too much fat and sugar. But why is water important? The human body needs water to survive. Water is important as it carries poisons and waste out of our bodies. So, doctors advise us to drink plenty of water, much more than the small amount we need to stay alive. Some doctors believe that water is important for our health in all kinds of ways. They believe that a great many illnesses and health problems start as a result of dehydration --- a lack of water in the body. Most people are dehydrated at least some of time, although they probably don't know it. It is surprising to learn that if we feel thirsty, we are already in the first stage of dehydration. In fact, we are advised to drink water before we feel thirsty. These doctors think that health problems such as headaches, high blood pressure and asthma(哮喘)could be helped if people drink more water. They also believe that drinking more water can help people who are overweight. Water contains no calories so it will not make us put on weight. If we drink water, we will probably drink less sugary soft drinks such as Coca-cola. Doctors also believe that drinking more water may stop people from overeating. They say that many people think that they are hungry when they are, in fact, thirsty. Doctors suggest, therefore, that we eat less food and drink more water. There are still many health problems that cannot be solved by drinking water, so we should not stop seeing the doctor completely. However, if we make a decision to drink water every day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor a lot less often. 32. From the text, we know water can carry ________. A. poisons and waste out of our bodies B. fruits, vegetables and fish in our bodies C. sugar and fat out of our bodies D. energy and fiber in our bodies 33. Some doctors think that ________. A. people eat too much sugar B. water is not important for our health C. we should go to the doctor less often D. some health problems are caused by a lack of water 34. A. they think they are thirsty and eat less B. they think they are hungry and eat too much C. water has no calories D.it makes them thirsty 35.What does the underlined word in the third paragraph mean ?
