A. $495 B. $800 C. $995 D. $1,100 B I am always nervous when I get an email from my parents with “FYI (For Your Information)”. My parents are in their late 70s, and while they are quite healthy for their ages, I worry about what messages they are going to give me. I got such an email in September from my father. He sent an email from my cousin who told that her father, my uncle Reese, had passed away. The news made my mind go blank though I have met him less than a dozen times in my life, because Reese was the first of my parent’s siblings(兄弟姐妹) to die, and I was simply not ready for that. The memorial service was set in Florida, and I quickly decided I needed to go. I needed to be there for my father, and I needed to go for myself. Reese is about nine years older than my father, and I started to do the math in my head. I know that doesn’t make sense, but I will do anything to reason that I still have a lot of time before I am in my cousin’s shoes. Reese’s memorial service was small with only family and perhaps a dozen of his friends. The funeral was attended by an even smaller number, and then, the family gathered at a nearby bar to look at old photographs found among Reese’ possessions. As we drove back to the Orlando International Airport, I thought about how I am not sure what my parents want, not only in their memorial services, but also how they want to be remembered and where they want to be laid to rest. These are going to be difficult conversations, but I know I need to have them. Maybe not right now, but we do need to open the discussion at some point. It may feel too early, but I trust my parents will know that when adult children raise these questions, we do it out of love to honor their lives and their wishes. 5. Why do emails with “FYI” make the author uneasy? A. She’s too busy to read those emails. B. She’s afraid to get bad news about her parents. C. They often bring unpleasant news. D. She dislikes her parents’ nonstop talking. 6. How did the author feel about the email from her cousin? A. Disappointed. B. Annoyed. C. Confused. D. Shocked 7. What do we know from the third and fourth paragraphs? A. A get-together was held at home. B. Reese’s friends didn’t appear. C. Not many people attended the funeral. D. The author hesitated to go to Florida. 8. What does the author decide to do after the funeral? A. Have a talk with her parents about death. B. Express her love for her parents bravely. C. Value her parents’ wishes.[] D. Get everything ready for her parents. C Every year on April 1, April Fools’ Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. In France, it’s called “Poisson d’Avril” or “Fish of April.” In Scotland, the holiday is often called “Gowkie Day.” In Iraq, the holiday is called Kithbet Neesan or “April Lie.” History experts say people have celebrated April Fools’ Day for a long time. Some believe the tradition comes from the ancient Romans more than two thousand years ago. It was a day of playing games and pretending to be someone else. Others say the day for fooling began in France in 1564, when King Charles changed the yearly calendar. He moved New Year’s Day from April 1 to January 1. Many people did not know about the change because of communication problems back then. Some people continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1. Other people called them April Fools and played jokes on them. In the United States, April Fools’ Day is just a day of joking and playing tricks on friends. These kinds of jokes are also called pranks. These jokes typically end in the prankster shouting “April Fools’!” Simple pranks, like telling a friend a funny lie or making prank phone calls, are still common. But, major companies also get in on April Fools’ Day fun in a much bigger way. A few years ago, on April 1, Starbucks announced it was introducing new coffee cup sizes -- Plenta and Micra. The very large cups, bigger than a human head, remained useful for customers even after finishing all that coffee. According to Starbucks, the cups could be used as a rain hat, a pot for plants, or a lampshade. It did not take long for customers to catch on to the prank! More and more people use social media or smart phone apps to play pranks on their friends on April Fools’ Day. One very annoying smart phone app, Cat Facts, sends funny facts about cats to your friends’ phones, every day. 9. Why did some people keep the old New Year’s Day? A. It was known only by the government. B. They wanted to be different from others. C. They like the old celebration. D. They didn’t know the time changed. 10. Americans celebrated April Fool’s Day to _________. A. improve the friendship between friends. B. have fun and play jokes on others. C. find a chance to give children gifts. D. escape the stress of their work. 11. What is the meaning of the underlined words “get in on” in Paragraph 5? A. Join in. B. Turn down. C. Break away from. D. Give up. 12. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text? A. To introduce a new festival. B. To tell a story on April Fool’s Day. C. To introduce April Fool’s Day. D. To express love to the friends. D BMW, Intel and computer firm Mobileye have signed a deal to cooperate on the systems needed to make cars that can go without any help from a human driver. The vehicles will be capable of driving safely along major roads as well as in suburban and inner city areas. BMW said it hoped the cooperation would mean it could put robot cars into production by 2021. The research partnership was announced on the day when US officials began an investigation into a car crash involving a Tesla Model S, to which self-driving technology could have contributed. Achieving this, said BMW, would make it possible for teams of unmanned vehicles to operate safely. This, it added, could lead to the creation of long-distance delivery services that employ robot-driven trucks. In a statement, the three firms said they were convinced that automated(自动的) driving technology will make travel safer and easier. They promised to make the results of the research available to other car makers and electronic firms to help make the standard for technology used in autonomous vehicles. Early work would focus on “highly automated driving” which BMW planned to demonstrate this year. More tests of the technology across lots of vehicles are planned for 2018. Before now, BMW has shown off concept cars that use autonomous technology and it is already working with Baidu in China to produce a self-driving car suited to that market. 13. As a result, our handwriting is not so good as it was in the past. In order to protect our Chinese characters and write both nicely and neatly, we’d like to offer some suggestions. Firstly, we should spend less time online so that we can have more time to read books and newspapers. Moreover, we’d better form the habit of practicing handwriting and keeping diaries every day. Besides, it is better to write letters to our relatives and friends by hand rather than send e-mails.As the saying goes, “The style is the man.” Beautiful and neat handwriting is beneficial to us students. So please pay more attention to our handwriting in the future. Let’s take action now! Students’ Union查看更多
