I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register, I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas. I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card. I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holiday meaningful. Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership --- a shop selling cars --- was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the show room. “Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said. “Thank you”--- two powerful words. They’re easy to say and mean so much. 24. The words “took off” underlined in Paragraph 2 means “_________”. A. put up B. moved off C. turned off D. set up 11 26. What happened when the author found smoke coming out of his car? A. The couple sent him a business card . B. The couple offered to help him . C. He had it pulled back to the gas station. D. He called his friend for help. 27. How does the author explain the importance of expressing thanks in the passage? A. By using quotations(引语). B. By doing an experiment. C. By explaining cause and effect. D. By telling his own experiences. C Using a mobile phone before going to bed can damage your health, according to a major study. It says that radiation from the mobile phone can cause insomnia(失眠症) and headaches as well as cutting the time spent in deep sleep. Failing to get enough sleep can lead to depression, lack of concentration and personality changes. In teenagers and young children, lack of sleep can result in attention disorders and poor grades. The research showed that using mobile phones before bed causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them. Deep sleep is important as it is the time when the body rejuvenates(更新) cells and repairs damage suffered during the day. Scientists found that using mobile phones an hour before sleep affects it. In the study scientists examined the sleep patterns of 36 women and 35 men aged 18 to 45. Some were exposed to radiation that is similar to what a person receives when using a mobile phone. The others received none. The results are as follows: The first group took longer to enter the first of the deeper stages of sleep and spent less time in the deepest one. However, the second group was opposite. The findings will shock many parents. Many parents are always worried about their children’s health. But they didn’t have a better way to persuade them not to use a mobile phone. 28. The passage mainly tells us that ________. A. the lack of sleep can lead to children’s excitement B. radiation from the mobile phone can cause parents’ worries C. many children use mobile phones before sleep D. using a mobile phone before sleep doesn’t harm the aged D A long time ago, being happy was considered to be something that just happened, and there was nothing special about it. But now we know that getting along with other people is something that we can work at. It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better. One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything from our friends. Another way is to look for good points, not bad ones in other people. It is surprising how successful this treasure hunt can be. You don’t have to be spineless (软弱的) in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked and respected if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights. But do it politely and pleasantly. Being friendly and polite to your group, to other people and to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character. You can not expect to be perfect, and so you must learn not to be unhappy when you make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed unless he refuses to learn from them. Many young people become discouraged when they know in themselves qualities that they do not like—selfishness, laziness, and other unpleasant qualities. Just remember that we all have some of these faults and have to fight against them. At the same time, it is important to remember that, while you are probably no worse than others, the best way to be happy is to think yourself above other people. When something is wrong, it is good sense to try to make it right. Perhaps you don’t like a teacher or a classmate. Try to see why, and look at yourself, too. To be sure that you are not doing anything to make that person dislike you. Some day, things may turn out all right, and then you will have to learn to get along the best with situation, without thinking too much about 11 it. Worrying never helps in a situation you can’t change. 32. Which is one of the two ways the writer suggested for us to get along with others? A. To look for treasure in order to be successful. B. To draw attention of our friends. C. To pay more attention to others’ strengths. D. To demand the best share of everything. 33. According to the passage, what does one need to do if he or she wants to be popular? A. Avoid arguing with other people. B. Be polite and friendly. C. Give up some rights. D. Try to change his or her character. 34. The passage shows that there is no perfect person but someone should be blamed if he _______. A. does not draw a lesson from his own fault B. is very happy about his unpleasant quality C. is no better than others D. is selfish and lazy 35. The purpose for the writer to write the passage is to _________. A. show you the way to be happy B. teach you how to be popular among your friends C. train you to be a perfect person D. tell you how to act when you dislike a person 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Everyone knows that fish is good for health. 36 But it seems that many people don’t cook fish at home.
