Enter the Red Hat Society -a group holding the belief that old ladies should have fun. “My grandmothers didn’t do anything but keep house and serve everybody. They were programmed to do that,” said Emily Cornette, head of a chapter of the 7-year-old Red Hat Society. While men have long spent their time fishing and playing golf, women have sometimes seemed to become unnoticed as they age. But the generation now turning 50 is the baby boomers(生育高峰期出生的人), and the same people who refused their parents’ way of being young are now trying a new way of growing old. If you take into consideration feminism(女权主义), a bit of spare money, and better health for most elderly, the Red Hat Society looks almost inevitable(必然的). In this society, women over 50 wear red hats and purple(紫色的) clothes, while the women under 50 wear pink hats and light purple clothing. “The organization took the idea from a poem by Jenny Joseph that begins: “When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat, which doesn’t go.” said Ellen Cooper, who founded the Red Hat Society in 1998. When the ladies started to wear the red hats, they attracted lots of attention. “The point of this is that we need a rest from always doing something for someone else,” Cooper said. “Women feel so ashamed and sorry when they do something for themselves.” This is why chapters are discouraged from raising money or doing anything useful. “We’re a ladies’ play group. It couldn’t be more simple,” added Cooper’s assistant Joe Heywood. 36.The underlined word “chapter” in paragraph 2 means __________. A.one branch of an organization B.a written agreement of a club C.one part of a collection of poems D.a period in a society’s history 37. From the text , we know that the “baby boomers” are a group of people who __________. A.have gradually become more noticeable B.are worried about getting old too quickly C.are enjoying a good life with plenty of money to spend D.tried living a different life from their parents when they were young 38. It could be inferred from the text that members of the Red Hat Society are __________. A.interested in raising money for social work B.programmers who can plan well for their future C.believers in equality between men and women D.good at cooking big meals and taking care of others 39.Who set up the Red Hat Society ? A.Emily Cornette . B.Ellen Cooper . C.Jenny Joseph . D.Joe Heywood. 40.Women join the Red Hat Society because . A.they want to stay young B.they would like to appear more attractive C.they would like to have fun and live for themselves D.they want to be more like their parents B Wugging, or web use giving, describes the act of giving to charity at no cost to the user. By using Everyclick.com, which is being added to a number of university computers across the UK, students can raise money every time they search, but it won’t cost them a penny. Research shows that students are extremely passionate about supporting charity — 88% of full time students have used the Internet to give to charity. This age group is often the least likely to have their own income. 19% of 22 to 24 year olds have short-term debts of more than £5,000. With rising personal debt levels in this age group, due to university tuition fees or personal loans and a lack of long-term savings, traditional methods of donating to charity are often not appealing (有感染力的) or possible. Beth Truman, a 21-year-old recent university graduate, has used Everyclick.com to donate to her chosen charity, the RSPCA, for two years and has seen the “wugging” movement grow in popularity with students. “When you’re at university you become more socially aware, but it’s sometimes hard to give to others when you have little money yourself,” says Beth,“Wugging is great for people in this age group as it allows them to use the technology on a daily basis to give to charity, without costing them a single penny.” Wugging is perfect for people who want to be more socially aware and supportive but don’t feel they have the means to do so. Students using the web can raise money for causes they care about without costing them anything in terms of time or money, and charities get a valuable source of funding. Everyclick.com works like any other search engine, allowing users to search for information, news and images but users can decide which of the UK’s 170,000 charities they would like to support through their clicks. Everyclick.com then makes monthly payments to every registered charity. Launched in June 2005, Everyclick.com is now the eighth largest search engine and one of the busiest charity websites in the UK. 41. According to the passage, “wugging” is actually ______. A. a website B. a charity-related action C. a school organization D. a student movement 42. In the case of charity, Everyclick.com ______. A. frees students of the financial worries B. receives much money from students C. offers valuable information to students D. praises students for their money-raising 43. What does Beth Truman think of the “wugging” movement? A. It makes Everyclick.com popular in the UK. B. It becomes easy to do charity because of it. C. It results in students’ more social awareness. D. It helps students to save money. 44. From the passage, we can conclude that ______. A. most full time students do charity on the Internet every day B. Everyclick.com helps students pay for the college education C. “wugging” is a win-win idea for both students and charities D. Everyclick.com is the most successful search engine in the UK 45. What would be the best title for this passage? A. “Wugging”, a new popular term on the Internet. B. British people show strong interest in charity. C. More Britain charities benefit from the Internet. D. Students raise money for charity by “wugging”. C The girl looking for the job turned out to be excellent but she ended up giving her employer a headache when it also turned out that she used an unreal diploma (文凭). In December, a Civil Administration Bureau in the city of Wuhan, Hubei Province, announced that it needed five new staff members. Some 120 people applied and took the exam. Applicants were required to show proof of a college degree at least. Mei Jing beat everyone, in the test and the interview. When a follow-up check was done, however, her education certificate was discovered to be an unreal one. This was a bit of an embarrassment for the employers. A dilemma, one might say. If she were hired because of her excellent performance, she still wouldn’t have the qualifications on paper. But, if she were dropped because she didn’t meet the education requirements, they would lose a good worker. Tough problem. While Mei’s future hangs in the balance, the public having learned of the case, got involved. Some people said the bureau should employ her, since results are the only important thing. “After all, ability is more important than a diploma,” said one office worker. Others, however, have attacked Mei’s dishonesty. They said that morality (道德) was, after all, more important than talent, especially in the case of a government position. Mei wasn’t honest, so she shouldn’t be hired. Case closed. But, Shen Ronghua, the head of the Shanghai Public Administration and Human resources Institute, tries to be a bit more philosophical. “There is still a sort of ‘diploma means this’ prejudice (偏见)among people,” Shen explains, “Many employers regard a diploma as the only sign of ability and talent.” So, with this in mind, people may pay little attention to whether someone has real ability or not. They turn to chasing a diploma instead. The unreal diploma is the natural product of this thought. The conclusion? “China needs a new human resource system. The new system will not define a person only by his or her diploma,” Shen says. 46. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “dilemma” in Paragraph Four? A. A problem easy to deal with or solve. B. A situation in which it is difficult for you to make the decision. C. A difference in two or more statements, ideas, or stories. D. Something said or done that is funny. 47. What can we infer from this news report? A. The Civil Administration Bureau of Wuhan employed the girl. B. The girl was not employed because of dishonesty. C. It remained to be seen whether the girl was to be employed or not. D. Another Human Resource Institute employed the girl. 48. What does Shen Ronghua mean by saying “diploma means this”? A. A diploma can tell whether a person is honest or not. B. A diploma is the only sign of ability and talent. C. A diploma is what you get after you finish a course. D. A diploma means a job. 49. Which statement is NOT true according to the news report? A. It seemed that the reporter agrees with Shen Ronghua’s opinion. B. If you want to get the job , you have to meet a certain education requirement. C. Most people held the view that morality was the most important thing. D. One official said that something should be done to change the human resource system. 50. Which of the following do you think is the best title of this news report? A. A Girl’s Unlucky Experience B. Unreal Diploma C. Dishonesty Has Been Attacked D. Can A Diploma Be All D In a few years, you might be able to speak Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French, and English — and all at the same time. This sounds incredible, but Alex Waibel, a computer science professor at US's Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Germany's University of Karlsruhe, announced last week that it may soon be reality. He and his team have invented software and hardware that could make it far easier for people who speak different languages to understand each other. One application, called Lecture Translation, can easily translate a speech from one language into another. Current translation technologies typically limit speakers to certain topics or a limited vocabulary. Users also have to be trained how to use the programme. Another prototype(雏形机) can send translations of a speech to different listeners depending on what language they speak. “It is like having a simultaneous translator right next to you but without disturbing the person next to you,” Waibel said. Prefer to read? So-called Translation Glasses transcribe(转录)the translations on a tiny liquid-crystal(液晶) display(LCD) screen. Then there’s the Muscle Translator. Electrodes capture (捕获) the electrical signals from facial muscle movements made naturally when a person is mouthing words. The signals are then translated into speech. The electrodes could be replaced with wireless chips (芯片) implanted (植入)in a person's face, according to researchers. During a demonstration held last Thursday in CMU's Pittsburgh campus, a Chinese student named Stan Jou had 11 tiny electrodes attached to the muscles of his cheeks, neck and throat. Then he mouthed — without speaking aloud — a few words in Mandarin(普通话) to the audience. A few seconds later, the phrase was displayed on a computer screen and spoken out by the computer in English and Spanish: “Let me introduce our new prototype.” This particular gadget(器械),when fully developed, might allow anyone to speak in any number of languages or, as Waibel put it, “to switch your mouth to a foreign language”. “The idea behind the university's prototypes is to create ‘good enough’ bridges for cross-cultural exchanges that are becoming more common in the world,” Waibel said. With spontaneous(自发的) translators, foreign drivers in Germany could listen to traffic warnings on the radio, tourists in China could read all the signs and talk with local people, and leaders of different countries could have secret talks without any interpreters there. 51. Which of the following statements is not TRUE? A. A Lecture Translation can translate what you said into other languages easily. B. There is no Muscle Translator in the world now. C. Muscle Translators can translate what you think into speech if you just move your mouth. D. The spontaneous translators will help us a lot. 52. What kind of equipment is NOT mentioned in this passage? A. Lecture Translation. B. Muscle Translator. C. Multiple Translator. D. Translation Prototype. 53. What’s the final destination of inventing the language translators? A. To make cultural exchanges between different countries easier. B. To help students learn foreign languages more easily. C. To make people live in foreign countries more comfortably. D. To help people learn more foreign languages in the future. 54. What can be inferred from the seventh paragraph? A. The translator is so good that it can translate any language into the very language you need. B. The translator is becoming more and more common in the world as a bridge. C. With the help of the translator, you only need to open your mouth when you want to say something without saying the exact words at all. D. The translator needs to be improved before being put into market. 55. Where can this passage probably be from? A. A newspaper. B. A magazine on science. C. A fairy tale. D. A scientific fantasy book. 第II卷 第三部分 写作 第一节 阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) Why not take a more measured approach to be a happier , healthier you? From your office to your bedroom to your car, these small changes can have a big impact on your life. Wake up ten minutes earlier. When you start your morning in a hurry, you set a stressful tone for the day. (I'm speaking from experience here.) Even ten extra minutes in the morning can help you feel more calm, collected, and ready to face the day. Spend five minutes in silence or meditation (冥想). You'll soon realize, whether it's in the morning or evening, that five minutes of sitting quietly with your eyes closed seems a lot longer than five minutes. But just this short silence can foster a quietness that carries through the day. When things go off the rails, simply close your eyes and recall that earlier quietness. Walk. Is there one trip you'd normally make in the car (to work, the gym, the store) that you can make on foot? Walking saves money (good for you) and gas (good for the environment) and burns calories (around 2,000 steps equal one mile), which is good for your health. Tell someone you love them. Life is never long enough to say this as many times as it should be said, whether to your mother , a friend, a significant other, or your dog. Make it a habit to tell someone at least once a day that you love him or her. While it may feel strange at first, you will never regret it. Stand (or sit) up straight. Good posture prevents back and neck pain and even builds confidence. When driving, tilt (倾斜) your rearview mirror (后视镜) up a bit. You'll have to sit up to see. At your desk, the top of your computer screen should be at eye level. Put a small cushion in the curve of your lower back, and your spine(脊柱) will become straight. 56. What does the text mainly talk about? (no more than 10 words) ___________________________________________________________________________ 57. Why is getting up ten minutes earlier in the morning suggested? (no more than 18 words) ____________________________________________________________________________ 58. What's the meaning of the underlined word “foster” in Paragraph 3? (no more than 2 words) ____________________________________________________________________________ 59. What benefits can you get from good posture? (no more than 15 words) ____________________________________________________________________________ 60. Do you like going to school on foot? Why or why not? (no more than 25 words) ____________________________________________________________________________ 第二节 书面表达 (满分25分) 假设你是校学生会主席,为了解决城市空气污染问题,你代表学生会向全校师生发出倡议。请根据以下要点,写一份倡议书: 1. 简述城市空气污染的危害; 2. 提出解决该问题的建议: (1) 尽量少开车; (2)不随地扔垃圾; (3)关闭一些工厂; ... 3. 发出号召。 注意:1. 可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯; 3. 词数 100~120。 书面表达 Dear teachers and students, These days one major environmental problem in our city is air pollution. Every day we have to take in very dirty air, which does great harm to our health. To make the air in the city fresher, we should keep the following in mind.
