Police officers handed out $200 grocery store gift cards to people who turned in an automatic weapon, and $100 gift cards to those who provided a handgun or shotgun. Los Angeles has held an annual gun buyback since 2009, and similar events have been organized in years past in several other cities, including Detroit and Boston. Police in San Diego had a buyback earlier this month. Some experts say the buybacks have little effect in reducing gun violence, but Villaraigosa touted the buyback program as one step that can be taken in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14 that claimed the lives of 20 children and six adult staff members. Los Angeles normally has its gun buyback in May, but Villaraigosa announced last week that the city would have this special buyback in response to the Newtown tragedy(悲剧). “There are a number of things we can do. This is just one of them,” Villaraigosa said on CNN. “We’ve got to also address the culture of violence that we’ve got in this country.” At the last count, the Los Angeles gun buyback had collected 1,366 firearms, including 477 handguns and 49 assault weapons, said Vicki Curry, a spokeswoman for the mayor. The buyback ended at 4 p.m. local time, but a final number of guns collected was not expected to be released before Thursday. In May, the city’s annual gun buyback program collected 1,673 firearms at six locations, compared to two locations used for the program on Wednesday, Curry said. At each of the locations where the buyback was held, a line of cars stretched around the block, Curry said. People dropping off their guns were asked to leave them in the trunks of their cars, where officers collected the weapons. While officials in Los Angeles and elsewhere have said the gun buybacks help keep streets safe, a 2004 report by the National Research Council of the National Academies questioned that conclusion. According to a leading expert, having a cluttered environment reflects a cluttered mind, but the act of tidying up can help you be more successful. The advice comes from Jayne Morris, the resident “life coach” for NHS Online, who said it is no good just moving the mess around. In order to clear the mind, unwanted items must be thrown away to free your “inner world”, she said. Ms Morris, who claims to have coached celebrities to major business figures, said, “Clearing clutter from your desk has the power to transform your business.” How? Because clutter in your outer environment is the physical sign of all the clutter going on inside of you. “Clearing clutter has a chain effect across your entire life, including your work. Having an untidy desk covered in clutter could be stopping you achieving the business success you want.” She is sure cleaning up will be helpful even though some of history’s biggest achievers lived and worked in messy conditions. Churchill was considered untidy from a boy throughout his life, from his office to his artist’s studio, and the lab where Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin was famously untidy. Among the recommendations is that simply tidying a desk at work and an overflowing filing cabinet(陈列柜) will instantly have a positive impact on “your inner world”. Anything that is no longer used should not be put into storage but thrown away completely. Keeping something in the loft, garage or other part of the house, does not help because it is still connected to the person “by tiny energetic lines”, Ms Morris claims. She said, “The things in your life that are useful to you, that add value to your life, that serve a current purpose are charged with positive energy that refreshes you and enriches your life. But the things that you don’t ever use and don’t need anymore have the opposite effect on your energy. Things that no longer fit or serve you, use up your energy.” ( )5. The underlined word “cluttered” (in Para.2) is closest in meaning to “ ”. A. messy B. brief C. complex D. aggressive ( )6. Which of the following statements does Ms Morris agree to? A. Changing the position of stuff frequently will help to build up a clear mind. B. A tidy office will lead to a success in your business affairs in no time. C. To have a free mind, we need to throw away unneeded items at times. D. You can pack up your things in garage or loft to cheer you up. ( )7. According to Ms Morris, an untidy desk probably means that . A. you are quite a failure B. you are in a messy mind C. you are too tired to deal with it D. you have achieved the business success ( )8. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Less Untidy, More Successful B. How to Improve Your Inner World C. Cleaning Up Makes You Less Intelligent D. But, what exactly is green computing? The term “green computing” is one that is being used in many different markets and areas all over the world in today’s global technology. Yet, many computer users out there aren’t sure what it means. Green computing is actually pretty easy to explain and to do—it is basically learning to use computer resources more efficiently to help the environment as well as making energy savings. The main goal of a green computing program is to reduce the use of energy and materials that harm the environment. Green computing helps to promote the use of biodegradable products and recycle computer parts whenever possible. Green computing started as early as 1992, when the EPA created Energy Star, which is a voluntary labeling program that promotes energy efficient computing equipment and technologies. It was because of this program that many computer manufacturers launched sleep mode and millions of computer users around the world began to adopt this policy to help save energy when they were not using their computers. The term “green computing” began to be used around the same time as well, and began to become a goal that more companies strive to meet over the years. There are several government agencies that have continued to help strive for better standards for computers and companies to help promote green promoting. Energy Star was actually revised in October of 2006 to make the requirements stricter for computers, and also implemented a ranking system for products. Because of these new requirements, there are over 20 states that have now established a special recycling program for old computers and electronics to help with green computing. Many of today’s IT systems are beginning to rely on both people and hardware to help push their computer systems towards a more green computing system to help both the company and others. This is a hard balance to achieve, as it has to satisfy users, management, and regulatory compliance(顺从). Even the disposal of computer waste is all managed so that everyone in the circle is happy with the outcome. But, many companies are learning the best ways that they can go more green when it comes to their computing and also help their business in the process. While many home computer users may not be quite as familiar with green computing as large firms, this term is starting to become more mainstream all around the world and the requirements for new, better computers to help both the companies and the end users of the equipment, as well as our environment, are becoming more and more urgent. In the debate, we impressed the audience and our opponents with convincing evidence and impeccable logic. The judges gave the comment that it is our close cooperation that made us stand out. To be honest, we went through many hardships and deserved the praise. First, we were separated into two groups for the purpose of collecting data from abundant books and mountains of websites and analyzing the opponents’ possible argument in an attempt to contradict them forcefully. Then, we made a good analysis of each member’s strengths and weaknesses to develop his or her potential to the fullest. I appreciated it very much when my partners offered me much help when I was at a loss what to prepare. We got along very well and our friendship was thus strengthened. Without doubt, the experience broadened my eyes and enriched my knowledge. What counts most is that such activities benefit each of us a lot in the long term, such as the art of cooperation and a lifelong bond.查看更多
