He jumped in to the water, but he didn't realize that a crocodile(鳄鱼)was swimming toward him. His mother was looking out the window and shouted to her son as loudly as she could. She ran toward the water and saw the two as they got closer and closer together. Hearing her voice, the little boy became scared and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the crocodile reached him. From the dark, the mother held her little boy by the arms just as the crocodile caught his legs. That began a tug-of war(拔河)between the two. The crocodile was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by. When he heard her crying, he ran out from his truck, too aim and shot the crocodile. Amazingly, after weeks and weeks in hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were full of cuts from the accident. And on his arms were deep scars(伤痕)from his mother's fingernails. A newspaper reporter asked the boy if he would show him his scars. C Have your parents ever told you any strange or scary things about protecting your eyes? For example, they might have said that you'd go blind from reading in the dark, but you could make up for it by eating a lot of carrots. This is just one of the wrong ideas you may have heard of. Below teens has picked out scientific explanations for three mistakes the people often make about eyes. Let's take a look. Can eating carrots improve your eyesight? Carrots are rich in Vitamin A, which is essential for our eyes' general health. Vitamin A helps the eyes to make light into signals, allowing people to see in low light conditions. However, eating more carrots doesn't help you see better. A certain minimum amount will help, but a large number of carrots will not give you superhuman vision or allow you to get rid of your glasses. If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too? Myopia(近视)can be passed from parents to children. A study by the American Optometric Association found that if both parents are myopia, there's a 33 to 60 percent chance that the child is. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23 to 40 percent, and it's down to 6 to 15 percent for kids with non-myopia parents. So no matter how bad your parents' eyesight is, you still have a chance having good eyesight. Is it true that people who are color blind can't see colors? Color blindness doesn't mean that someone can't see colors at all, like a black and white movie. Most commonly, it means that someone has difficulty telling certain colors apart, usually green and red or blue and yellow. Color blindness is usually a condition caused by not having color cone cells or the cells not working. If the cells don't respond in the right way to differences in wavelengths of light, color blindness happens. There are different levels of color blindness. Some people cannot tell the difference between colors in dim light, while others have difficulty in any light. In the most serious from of color blindness, everything is seen in shades of grey. 23. According to the passage, which is the RIGHT idea about eating carrots? A. Eating carrots doesn't help people see better. B. People need to eat as many carrots as possible. C. Eating carrots is good for eyes, but people don't need to eat a lot of them. D. Eating a lot of carrots is only appropriate for those who work in low light conditions. 24. Sam's mother is shortsighted, but his father is not. How much could be his chances of having good eyesight? A. 6-15% B. 23-40% C. 33-60% D. 60-77% 25. How does the author describe color blindness according to the passage? A. Most people who are color blind can only see grey. B. Lacking color cone cells can cause color blindness. C. Those who can't tell green from red are not really color blind. D. Most people who are color blind can only see black and white. 26. What's the best title of this passage? A. Misunderstanding about Eyes. B. Advice on Protecting Your Eyes. C. Reasons for Bad Eyesight and Color Blindness. D. Medical Information about Improving Your Vision. D Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin leaning on their first day of life. Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile of her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregiver. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings. One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant(怀孕的)woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device(装置)in the mouth of the newborn baby. The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again. Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children. Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers tried to measure the sensitivity(敏感度)of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children's activities and did not interfere( 干涉)unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression(抑郁). The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear. These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression. 27.
