On the eve of my day of absence, I inform housemates, my family and close friends that I will not be reachable for twenty-four hours; then I disconnect the telephone. I sit for at least an hour in a very hot bathtub; then I lay out my clothes in preparation for my morning escape, and knowing that nothing will disturb me, I sleep well. On the morning I wake naturally, for I will have set no clock, nor informed my body timepiece when it should alarm. I dress in comfortable shoes and casual clothes and leave my house going no place. If I am living in a city, I wander streets, window-shop, or stare at buildings. I enter and leave public parks, libraries, and theatres. I stay in no place for very long. Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously , separates the past from the future. Jobs, family and friends can exist one day without any one of us. Each person deserves the day in which no problems are faced up to, no solutions searched for, We need hours of aimless wandering or sitting on park benches, observing the mysterious world of ants. If we step away for a time, we are not, as many may think, being irresponsible, but rather we are preparing ourselves to more ably perform our duties. When I return home, I am always surprised to find some questions I sought to evade had been answered and some entanglements (瓜葛) I had hoped to flee had become separated out in my absence. Not exactly, but some doctors have found a way to use a robot to check on patients while they're miles from the hospital. One is at Baltimore's Sinai Hospital Equipped with cameras,a screen and microphone, the robot is guided into the rooms of Dr Alex Gandsas' patients where he speaks to them as if he were right there. “The system allows you to be anywhere in the hospital from anywhere in the world,” said the surgeon, who specializes in weightloss operation. Besides his normal morning and afternoon personal visits,Gandsas uses the $150,000 robot to visit patients at night or when problems arise. The robot can circle the bed and adjust the position of its two cameras, giving the perception from the patient's standpoint that the doctor is there.“They love it. They'd rather see me through the robot,” he said of his patients' reaction to the machine. Nurse Florence Ford, who has worked with the robot since it was introduced about 18 months ago, said patients have reacted well, particularly because “seeing the doctor's face gives them confidence.” Gandsas presented the idea to hospital leaders as a method to more closely observe patients following weightloss operation.Since its introduction,Dr Alex found that nearly one third of his 376 patients went out of hospital earlier than first expected. Michael Chan, president of In Touch Technologies, said his company's device allows doctors to “be in more than one place at the same time.” Speaking with Gandsas through one of the robots at company headquarters,Chan said the company designs applications for the devices in remote areas and for dealing with shortages of health care workers.“They will soon be big,”said Chan when asked about their future. 28. According to the passage, which of the following statements of the robot is Correct? A.It has replaced Dr Alex to visit his patients every day. B.The patients would rather have it treat their diseases. C.Patients are likely to be treated even when doctors are far away. D.It has reduced the duty that doctors should have for their patients. 29. By using robots,Dr Alex finds that ______. A. he can operate on different patients at the same time B. the number of patients in his hospital is reducing a lot C. patients visited by robots may recover completely sooner D. their hospital doesn't need as many medical workers as before 30. From the last sentence,we can learn that Michael Chan thinks that ______. A. more robots of this kind will be used in hospitals B. people won't believe robots will do well in the future C. in the future bigger robots will be made to satisfy the needs D. the prices of the robots will be greatly reduced in the future 31. What would be the best title of the passage? A. Robot Replaces Doctors to Treat Patients B. Robot Visits Patients When Doctors Can't C. Hightech Makes Patients Better Communicate with Doctors D. Robot Has Begun to Play a Great Part in Hospital Management D It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar. And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t. In the World Book Day’s “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out), I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s really brilliant. The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied about it either) and Herman Melville. Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in-depth! But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I’ll come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so). 32. How did the author find his friend a book liar? A. By judging his manner of speaking. B. By looking into his background. C. By mentioning a famous name. D. By discussing the book itself. 33. Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report? A. Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list. B. 42% of people pretended to have read 1984. C. The author admitted having read 9 books. D. Dreams From My Father is hardly read. 34. By lying about reading, a person hopes to____________________. A. appear knowledgeable B. control the conversation C. learn about the book D. make more friends 35. What is the author’s attitude to 58% of readers? A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring C. Favorable D. Friendly 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Little Habits Make a Big Difference Everything around us is changing at amazing speed, it seems—but some things will always remain the same. 36 . I used to love chocolate, but now I can't stand it unless it's in a cookie. Text 2 W: Hello, I am here to apply for the sales job. Who should I speak to? M: Why don't you talk to our manager Jack? (2) He's the one cleaning the store windows. Text 3 M: Can I borrow a book? I am a newcomer to the college. W: Sure, but first you :need to have a library card. After that, you can borrow any book. There are many reading rooms here. (3)You can sit where you like to. Text 4 M: Linda is very quiet. But her brother talks too much. W: Yes, you are right. And he isn't friendly either. (4) Text 5 M: I'm starting to worry. The cat hasn't come home yet, and it's getting dark. Should we call her again? W: No need. When she wants to eat, she'll jump :in through the window. (5) Text 6 W: Did you hear about that woman who went missing last weekend? M: Yeah, she was walking her dogs in the forest, and didn't come back. Did she get lost? W: No, she often goes there and knows the forest well. She fell down a hill and broke her leg. (6) She is in hospital right now. M: Wow. How did she survive so long? W: Her two dogs slept beside her to keep her warm. M: That is amazing. I guess that's why people say dogs are "man's best friend". W: I know. A hiker discovered her after he heard the dogs barking. (7) M: Look! I think that is her husband on TV right now. Turn up the volume. Text 7 M: Do you know what I noticed today? I spend more time learning about the past than I do about the present. (8) W: That is why you should start watching the news to get to know the latest events. (8) M: You're right. (8) What is that on TV? W: Firemen are fighting forest fires in Los Angeles right now. (9) M: That looks like something out of a movie. W: Strange, isn't it? Fires on one side of the country, and snowstorms here in New York, M: What about world news? Anything interesting? W: World leaders are meeting in Paris to discuss climate change. M: That seems appropriate, considering what is happening in the world. When will the sports come on? (10) W: Near the end of the hour, just before the weather report. You should listen to the local news first. (10) Listen! It is about the snowstorm... Text 8 W: I'm stuck! Could you help get my car out of the snow, Mr. Brady? (11) I'm already late for school. M: It's my pleasure, Anne. I was clearing the snow on the sidewalk, anyway. W: So, when do your grandchildren get here? (12) M: My daughter is bringing them down this weekend. (12) That means I only have three days to hang these Christmas lights. W: I bet her kids will love this weather. M: So, when do you get off for the Christmas break? W: Monday. I just have a couple of tests at the end of the week, and I'm done. M: Good for you. Do you have any plans for the holiday? (13) You went to a farm with your friends last year, didn't you? W: Yes. This year, we were planning on going to a ski mountain, but the hotels were all booked. So, we will spend the holiday in the city instead. My aunt is lending me her apartment. (13) M: That is nice of her. OK, it looks like you're ready to go. You step on the gas, and I'll give you a push. W: It worked! Bye, Mr. Brady! Text 9 W: Jeffrey! I'm glad I ran into you. I need some advice. (14) M: No problem, Lili. I was just on my way to the science lab. What can I do for you? (14) W: My neighbor invited me over for dinner tonight. Is there anything I should know about Western dining traditions? (15) M: We are not too strict about these things, (15) so you needn't worry too much. W: Are you sure? I've heard there are many roles about when to come, what to bring, and how to act. M: OK, so what time did they say you'd be eating dinner? W: She said to come "around five". Does that mean I should come half an hour early, or later? (16) M: It means exactly what she said. (16) W: OK. Do I have to bring gifts? I remember she likes collecting CDs. M: If it was a larger dinner with many people, you could ask to make something. In this case, a bottle of wine is good enough. (17) W: I remember my tutor saying that iii should eat whatever they serve me. M: That's not really true. You may eat whatever you want. Just relax. You'll be fine. W: OK, thanks. I'll let you know how it goes. Text 10 Kate McClure's car ran out of gas one night on her way into Philadelphia.
