B In a rare and difficult mission, a plane successfully rescued two sick workers from the U.S. science station at the South Pole on Wednesday. The medical rescue took place in the dark. Regular flights to the South Pole are usually considered too risky between the months of February and October. The Amundsen-Scott station is run by the National Science Foundation. The plane arrived there after a difficult 2,400-kilometer, nine-hour trip from a British base on the Antarctic Peninsula. The National Science Foundation spokesman Peter West said the rescue operation went according to plan. “It was a very challenging operation for the pilots, for everyone who is around to support the pilots, everyone from weather forecasters, to flight followers, all those people. So it was extremely challenging and they have performed extraordinarily well in the face of those challenges.” The National Science Foundation did not release the workers’ names, nationalities, or medical conditions. The National Science Foundation decided last week to send away at least one person from the station. The station has a doctor and a physician’s assistant. They make contact with doctors in the U.S. as needed. But, the worker needed medical care that the station’s doctor could not provide. They decided to send away a second worker who was also sick. West said the rescue operation was considered risky because right now Antarctica is always dark and extremely cold. “It is dark there now, because we are into the Antarctic night. It is very cold at the South Pole. The average temperature is minus 60 Celsius, though it can be colder and can be warmer. There is weather to contend with, which is not the same as temperature. Blowing and drifting snow and all of those things.” 24. What was the task of this special flight? A. To observe climate in Antarctica. B. To send doctors to Antarctica. C. To save people from Antarctica.. D. To deliver equipment to Antarctica. 25. What was Peter West’s attitude towards the people involved in this action? A. Neutral. B. Praiseful. C. Optimistic. D. Agreeable 26. What do you know about the two workers? A. Their names. B. Their nationalities. C. Their working place. D. Their medical conditions. 27. Why were the two workers sent away? A. They couldn’t work any longer. B. They were not used to the extreme cold. C. There was no medical care in the station. D. The station doctor couldn’t treat their illness. C New efforts are underway to make American college campuses and public housing free of cigarette smoking. Twenty colleges in the United States recently received grants (许可) to help make their campuses tobacco free. And in November, U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro announced that smoking will become illegal at all public housing over the next 18 months. The federal housing department has over one million homes. “Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, healthy home free from harmful second-hand cigarette smoke,” Castro said. The move to ban smoking at public housing units and college campuses follows approval of state laws banning smoking at most workplaces. 27 American states ban smoking in all indoor workplaces, including restaurants. California became the first state to ban smoking at most workplaces in 1995. Those supporting smoke-free workplaces, public housing and college campuses give one major reason: the negative health effects of smoking. The Centers for Disease Control says the health effects of smoking are large. The CDC says cigarette smoking is the leading cause of “preventable deaths” in the United States. Smoking accounts for 480,000 deaths every year, it says. Supporters of smoking bans and smoke-free areas say the bad effects of second-hand smoke make it a public health issue. Some also say that college campuses are a good place to limit or ban smoking. Gary Reedy is chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society, which recently announced anti-smoking grants to 20 U.S. colleges. He said it is important to stop college students from smoking, “to be successful in creating a tobacco-free generation.” The CDC estimates that 13 percent of adults between the ages of 18 and 24 smoke cigarettes. Reedy said that reducing the number of college students who smoke can lead to reduced smoking rates among older adults. His reasoning? Once a person starts smoking, it is hard to stop, Reedy says. The CVS Health Foundation is providing $ 3.6 million for the anti-smoking grants. The foundation was started by the American drug store company CVS. 28. Who will benefit from the new efforts to deal with cigarettes? A. Young smokers. B. Tobacco companies. C. Students and children. D. People in public places. 29. What makes the measure to ban smoking possible? A. Money wasted on cigarettes. B. Bad health effects of smoking. C. Public awareness of health. D. Laws passed by states. 30. What does the underlined part “preventable deaths” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. Deaths caused by smoking. B. Deaths that can be stopped. C. Deaths in serious accidents. D. Deaths due to deadly diseases. 31. Which of the following matches Reedy’s opinions? A. Smoke-free campuses reduce adult smokers. B. His organization will offer enough money to colleges. C. Students won’t smoke if they weren’t at colleges. D. It is easier for college students to stop smoking. D Did you ever wonder why you have no memory of when you were a baby or very young child? The question of why adults do not remember how they learned to walk or talk has long been a mystery. Researchers in the United States are investigating this question. You know you learned how to walk and talk, but the funny thing is that you don’t remember when and how you learned this. The study involved computer-based tests. The tests were designed to work like games. They were given to 32 four-year-olds, 32 six-year-olds and 50 young adults. The tests measured the memory process that helps people recognize differences between experiences. For example: A walk with your dog when you saw a friend, and a different walk without your dog or when you did not see your friend. The second test involved showing the test subjects a number of photographs. The children and young adults taking the test were asked to compare the first group of photos with a second set of pictures. Sometimes, the two sets of photos were the same. But other times, they were different. Remembering differences in objects, such as pictures, is known as pattern separation. The two tests suggest that memory skills are more advanced for six-year-olds than 4-year-olds. That might help explain why adults do not remember when they learned to walk or talk. Memory research is important as doctors try to develop a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Persons with the disease suffer memory loss. But memory loss research is not limited to helping Alzheimer’s patients. It could help with law enforcement officers trying to get more detailed descriptions from witnesses to crimes. It could also help find ways to get better and more reliable information from young victims of crime, such as child abuse by family members or care givers. 32. How did the researchers carry out their search? A. By analyzing. B. By comparing. C. By discussing. D. By observing. 33. Why do adults not remember their early life according to the tests? A. Their memory skills haven’t developed well enough. B. They don’t have the ability of recognizing pictures. C. They don’t have any memory at that stage of life. D. Their minds are disturbed by their surroundings. 34. What do you know from the last paragraph? A. The cause of memory loss. B. The cure of a serious disease. C. The practical value of memory research. D. The reliable information from young victim. 35. What may be the best title for the text? A. When Can We Remember Our Life of Early Years? B. The Most Unforgettable Experiences We Remember. C. The Older We Are, the Better Memory Skills We Have. D. Why Can’t We Remember Our First Few Years of Life? 第二书(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The United States is primarily an English speaking country. 36 Business, education and most public aspects of life are conducted in English. Across the country, people pronounce English sounds in several different ways and some regional vocabulary differences exist, but for the most part, Americans speak one common language. 37 However, not everyone in the U.S. is a native speaker of English. Most immigrants to the country are speakers of other languages. There are hundreds of communities around the U.S. where English is not the most commonly used language. Chinese, Italian, German, Armenian, Greek, Vietnamese and French are all spoken in numerous communities in the U.S. 38 It is widely spoken in New York and across the southern part of the country. For speakers of other languages, learning English is important, but traditionally teaching people to speak English as a second language was given little attention. Non-English speakers were expected to “pick up” the language through contact in public. 39 Today, most large public schools and community colleges have ESL, English as a Second Language, programs. American English teachers feel that English students should learn the language the way they will be using it. Therefore, ESL programs teach different English lessons to different students. Some programs teach students to communicate in English in public. 40 American ESL instructional methods emphasize the importance of communication to language learning. The instructional goal is to get the English learners to learn by using their target language. A. Recently, this has changed. B. This language is called American English. C. They arrived here with their own languages. D. These methods do not feature grammar and translation. E. The majority of the population speaks English as their native language. F. Yours, Li Hua 附:听力录音文稿 Text 1 M: You’re all grown up! How old are you now? Fifteen? W: I was fifteen the last time you saw me! I’m twenty now. M: Really? It seems like just last year that you and your brother came over to visit! Text 2 M: Do you think, within a few years, many people could work at home instead of working in offices? W: Yes, of course. Science and technology have developed really fast these past few years. And in the future, I believe almost all our ideas will become reality. M: I’m looking forward to it. Text 3 M: Excuse me. I asked for this salad without cheese on it, but this one is covered in it. W: I’m sorry, sir. I’ll take it back and bring you out a new one. Can I get anything else for you? M: Just another soda, please. Thank you. Text 4 M: What would you like for your birthday, Sis? W: I want the iPhone 6S. M: That’s a pretty expensive gift! Do you think Mom and Dad will buy it for you? W: No, but I’m hoping Aunt Janine will. Text 5 W: Sir, you need to bring your chair back to its upright position and close your tray table. We’re touching down in fifteen minutes. M: Sorry, I didn’t hear the announcement. I had my headphones in. Text 6 W: Did you have a nice weekend, Charlie? M: Not really. I went camping with my family. W: That sounds fun! M: It wasn’t. Camping is so boring. I didn’t have any service on my phone, so I couldn’t check Facebook or Twitter the whole weekend! W: That doesn’t sound like a big deal. Didn’t you enjoy hiking or swimming with your family? M: Not really. I enjoyed taking pictures of us fishing, but I couldn’t even post them until we got back on Monday. W: Hmm... It sounds to me like you need to learn how to enjoy life without sharing every moment on social media. Text 7 W: You look sad, Jason. What’s wrong? M: I got a ticket just now. W: Why? M: I was driving slowly near the shopping mall when a policeman suddenly appeared from behind and asked me to pull over. I had to stop my car. He told me that I had stopped on the double yellow line while I was waiting for the light. W: Why did you do that? You are not a new driver. M: I was thinking about my mother. She’s been ill in bed. I was worrying about her, so I didn’t notice where I had stopped. W: Then what did you say? M: I said I was wrong, but the policeman wrote me a ticket anyway. That means I lost 425 dollars! W: Misfortunes often come in pairs. Text 8 W: What did you just put in the basket? M: Some peanut butter. W: That is not a jar of peanut butter. M: Okay, fine. They’re peanut butter cookies. W: You know we don’t keep cookies in the house. M: Mom, please? W: I will buy you yoghurt instead. It’s much healthier. M: I don’t like yoghurt. What about some chocolate pudding? W: You can get the low sugar kind. M: That kind doesn’t taste as good. What about some carrot cake? It has carrots in it. W: Cake also has a lot of sugar. M: This is so unfair! I’m the only kid at school who isn’t allowed to eat food that tastes good. W: Okay, I’ll let you buy one chocolate bar, but that’s it. M: Really? Are you serious? You’re the best, Mom! Text 9 W: Thanks for coming in today. Please have a seat. Tell me a little bit about yourself. Why do you think you’re qualified for this job? M: I’ve worked as a music teacher my whole life, mainly with children, and now I’m ready for a change. Because I love music so much, I think working at a radio station would be perfect for me. W: The duties of this job include answering the phones and sending emails. How are you with both of those things? M: I’m experienced in sending emails, and I’m also fairly confident on the phone. When I was a teenager, I worked at a TV station answering phone calls, so this is probably pretty similar. W: We also have some early mornings here in the studio. Sometimes you’ll have to be here around 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. How do you feel about that? M: I’m an early riser, so that’s easy for me. It also means less traffic, which I’m always a fan of. W: Do you have references I can call? M: Yes, I have a list to give you. Two are people I worked with at my last job, and one is an old graduate school professor of mine. W: Great. Well, I think that’s it. I’ll give you a call back in the next few days to let you know our decision. M: Thank you so much. Text 10 People who live in cities usually take their dirty clothes to a laundry place called a “laundromat”. These public businesses are usually open from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. A smaller laundromat might have a dozen washers and a dozen dryers, while a larger one might have twice that number. Most places do not have any employees there, as there are simple instructions posted near the machines and everything can be done without assistance. Most people bring their own washing soap, but there is often a machine that sells small packages in case you run out or forget yours. During the weekend, it can be hard to find an open machine but it is much easier during the week. Many laundry places have TVs, video games, magazines, or free Wi-Fi. Recently, many laundry places have added cafés or bars. Because people usually spend a few hours doing their laundry, having a drink or a meal is a convenient and fun way to pass the time. Of course, when so many people are washing their clothes close to each other, it is easy to make mistakes. My sister actually met her husband at a laundromat after he put her clothes in his basket by accident! 查看更多
