When you’re pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process. 1. Yotel New York The self-service kiosks at this high-tech New York hotel work just like the ones you’d see at an airport. There are just five-steps to register and obtain your card key. There is even a robotic luggage bellboy. You tap in the number of bags you’re carrying and sizes, then wait for a robot arm to swing down and store your luggage in a locker (say, for a day trip). This also speeds up the check-in process if the first thing you need to do, like me, is head to a series of meetings. 2. Marriott Detroit Airport Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroit Airport hotel. (I’ve tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) Here is the basic idea: you download the iPhone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk. 3. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis I happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. Like the Yotel, the kiosk asks you to insert your credit card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole process took about three minutes, when I left, I was equally impressed with the fast check-out. An agent meets you in the lobby with, an iPad and asks for an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line. 4. Radisson: LaCrosse The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster. At a few select hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in Wisconsin, you use a mobile app to register and then receive a barcode by email or text. When you get the kiosk, you scan the barcode to get your key without any other steps required. It’s super-fast. You can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Phoenix as well. 51. What does the underlined word ‘infuriate’ in Paragraph 2 most probably mean? A. annoy B. remind C. amuse D. impress 52. Which two hotels offer a mobile app for customers to check in? A. Yotel New York and Marriott Detroit Airport B. Marriott Detroit Airport and Radisson LaCrosse C. Marriott Detroit Airport and Hyatt Regency Minneapolis D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis and Radisson LaCrosse 53. Which hotel will send you a receipt by email? A. Yotel New York B. Marriott Detroit Airport C. Radisson LaCrosse D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis B “Did you hear what happened to Adam Last Friday?” Lindsey whispers to Tori. With her eyes shining, Tori brags, “You bet I did. Sean told me two days ago.” Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happened to be yours truly, Adam Freedman, I can tell you that what they are saying is (a) not nice and (b) not even true. Still, Lindsey and Tori aren’t very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话)。I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people, it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group. An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic -- breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out -- that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain. If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor (传言) can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don’t. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the “in group.” In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority. Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The do’s and don’ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook. The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have. 54. The author uses a conversation at the beginning of the passage to ______ . A. introduce a topic B. present an argument C. describe the characters D. clarify his writing purpose 55. An important negative effects of gossip is that it ______. A. breaks up relationships B. embarrasses the listener C. spreads information around D. causes unpleasant experiences 56. What advice does the author give in the passage? A. Never become a gossiper B. Stay away from gossipers C. Don’t let gossip turn into lies D. Think twice before you gossip. C Hollywood’s theory that machines with evil (邪恶) minds will drive armies of killer robots is just silly. The real problem relates to the possibility that artificial intelligence(AI) may become extremely good at achieving something other than what we really want. In 1960 a well-known mathematician Norbert Wiener, who founded the field of cybernetics (控制论), put it this way: “If we use, to achieve our purposes, a mechanical agency with whose operation we cannot effectively interfere (干预), we had better be quite sure that the purpose put into the machine is the purpose which we really desire.” A machine with a specific purpose has another quality, one that we usually associate with living things: a wish to preserve its own existence. For the machine, this quality is not in-born, nor is it something introduced by humans; it is a logical consequence of the simple fact that the machine cannot achieve its original purpose if it is dead. So if we send out a robot with the single instruction of fetching coffee, it will have a strong desire to secure success by disabling its own off switch or even killing anyone who might interfere with its task. If we are not careful, then, we could face a kind of global chess match against very determined, super intelligent machines whose objectives conflict with our own, with the real world as the chessboard. The possibility of entering into and losing such a match should concentrate the minds of computer scientists. Some researchers argue that we can seal the machines inside a kind of firewall, using them to answer difficult questions but never allowing them to affect the real world. Unfortunately, that plan seems unlikely to work: we have yet to invent a firewall that is secure against ordinary humans, let alone super intelligent machines. Solving the safety problem well enough to move forward in AI seems to be possible but not easy. There are probably decades in which to plan for the arrival of super intelligent machines. But the problem should not be dismissed out of hand, as it has been by some AI researchers. Some argue that humans and machines can coexist as long as they work in teams—yet that is not possible unless machines share the goals of humans. Others say we can just “switch them off” as if super intelligent machines are too stupid to think of that possibility. Still others think that super intelligent AI will never happen. On September 11, 1933, famous physicist Ernest Rutherford stated, with confidence, “Anyone who expects a source of power in the transformation of these atoms is talking moonshine.” However, on September 12, 1933, physicist Leo Szilard invented the neutron-induced (中子诱导) nuclear chain reaction. 57. Paragraph 1 mainly tells us that artificial intelligence may . A. run out of human control B. satisfy human’s real desires C. command armies of killer robots D. work faster than a mathematician 58. Machines with specific purposes are associated with living things partly because they might be able to . A. prevent themselves from being destroyed B achieve their original goals independently C. do anything successfully with given orders D. beat humans in international chess matches 59. According to some researchers, we can use firewalls to . A. help super intelligent machines work better B. be secure against evil human beings C. keep machines from being harmed D. avoid robots’ affecting the world 60. What does the author think of the safety problem of super intelligent machines? A. It will disappear with the development of AI. B. It will get worse with human interference. C. It will be solved but with difficulty. D. It will stay for a decade. D He leant down to the pickpocket. The heaving and gasping (喘气) had stopped, but he was still making a show of his breathlessness. “That’s better,” Mallon said. “Can you stand up? Try to stand up. Here,” he said, and gripped the pickpocket’s arm and forced him upright until he saw his face for the first time. As the pickpocket labored for breath, he gazed up at Mallon with his dark eyes. “How could you?” they asked. Mallon might have said, “Because you tried to steal from me.” But he was still conscious of the flush of joy he’d felt when his blow struck home — when he knew he’d hurt the man. Where that joy came from he couldn’t say, but he knew that its roots were deeper than some clumsy failed theft. Fat drops of rain began to patter on the awning (雨篷). “How are you?” Mallon said. “Can you walk?” The pickpocket turned away and leant against the store window with both hands, and his head sank lower as his shoulders rose and fell. A gray-haired woman inside the store rapped on the glass and made a shooing motion. When the pickpocket ignored her, she rapped harder and kept rapping. “I have to go,” Mallon said. “I’m sorry.” He looked up at the sky. “I’m sorry,” he said again, and stepped into the rain and walked quickly up the street. One of the Bangladeshi umbrella sellers was working the corner, and Mallon had just paid seven euros when he heard a woman shouting. He didn’t want to look back but did. It was the woman from the shop, pushing and batting the pickpocket away from the window while he bent down and covered his head like a boxer trying to get through the last seconds of a round. Mallon slipped his wallet back into his jacket pocket and took the umbrella that the Bangladeshi had opened for him. The pickpocket was out on the sidewalk now, in the rain. The woman stood just under the awning with her arms crossed over her chest. “Excuse me, madam,” Mallon said, coming up to them. “This man isn’t well. He needs to rest a moment.” “I know these people,” she said. “Our Romans don’t want them here.” The rain fell in sheets, ran down the pickpocket’s shiny scalp and face, down his leather jacket. “Here,” Mallon said, and offered him the umbrella, but he only looked at Mallon with his hurt dark eyes and then lowered his head again. Mallon bumped him in the shoulder with the handle of the umbrella. “Go on — take it!” he said. And finally, with a beaten, unwilling look, the pickpocket did. And that was when he saw a taxi round the corner with a light glowing on its roof. Mallon ran out waving his arm and the cab turned sharply to the pavement, sending a lot of water over his shoes. He opened the door but couldn’t help looking back. The pickpocket had lowered the umbrella to the ground upside down and was leaning on the shaft, head low, neck bared to the sky. “Wait,” Mallon said to the driver. He went back and grabbed the pickpocket’s sleeve and pulled him to the cab. “Get in,” Mallon said, and took the umbrella and pushed him into the back seat. He leaned inside. “O.K., where do you live?” “No Gypsies!” the driver said. He was twisted around, glaring at the pickpocket. “Gypsy? Look, he’s not well. I’ll pay,” Mallon added. The driver shook his head. “No Gypsies. Get him out,” Mallon looked at the driver’s nameplate: Michele Kadare. “It’s the law,” he said, “If you don’t take us, Signor Kadare, I’ll report you and you’ll lose your license. Believe me — I am quite serious.” The driver fastened those pale eyes on Mallon and turned and put his hands on the steering wheel. He raised his eyes to the rearview mirror and he and Mallon exchanged stares. “O.K., Mr. American,” he said. “You pay.” 61. What kind of person is Mallon according to the passage? A. stubborn and cruel B. kind and considerate C. cruel but honest D. generous but stubborn 62. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 indicate? A. Mallon shouldn’t have saved the pickpocket. B. The pickpocket was a little suspicious of Mallon’s intention C. The pickpocket blamed Mallon for his failure to steal D. Mallon must have beaten the pickpocket before helping him. 63. Where should the sentence “He hesitated, then turned back.” be placed? A. Between paragraphs 5 and 6. B. Between paragraphs 6 and 7. C. Between paragraphs 7 and 8. D. Between paragraphs 8 and 9. 64. From the attitudes of the woman and the driver towards the pickpocket, we can conclude that ________. A. the Gypsies had a bad reputation in Rome B. the pickpocket frequently stole around the woman’s store C. everyone was protected by the law in Rome except the Gypsies D. the pickpocket couldn’t purchase anything in the woman’s store 65. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A. The taxi didn’t take the pickpocket to his house in the end. B. The pickpocket succeeded in stealing something from Mallon. C. The pickpocket had conflicting emotions about Mallon’s help D. The umbrella seller gave an umbrella to Mallon free of charge A young person is said to have a behavior disorder when his or her behavior is noticeably different from that expected in the school or community. This can also be stated in simpler terms as a child who is not doing what adults want him to do at a particular time. Children with this disorder often seem to be behaving in different and socially unacceptable ways. Like learning disabilities, behavior disorders are hard to diagnose. There are no physical symptoms (症状) in the body that are observable or measurable. Behavior disorders are therefore identified by observing behavior patterns in the child over a period of time. If a child shows some of the following behaviors, he may be labeled with a behavior disorder: ◆ Aggression and cruelty to people and animals. ◆ Destruction of property — defacing or damaging things. ◆ Little sympathy and concern for others. ◆ Takes no responsibility for behavior. Also lies, cheats and steals easily. ◆ Disregards (漠视) rules and regulations. In addition to these general symptoms of a behavior disorder, there are other symptoms characteristic of more specific behavior disorders such as ADHD — this is the inattentive, can’t-sit-still behavior. The attention can’t last long and the behavior is impulsive at times. The child also seems quite distracted and forgetful. Behavior disorders come from brain injury, child abuse, and shock, etc. There have also been indications that it could be a genetic disorder. The behavior therefore is an involuntary response to these experiences and the child should not be blamed for his behavior. Since the child has problems controlling his behavior, it stands to reason that his performance in school will be affected. A child with a behavior disorder will feel bad about himself and that low self-esteem will be further worsened by the adults round him who do not treat his condition with understanding and willingness to help. Behavior disorders are best dealt with by behavior and psychological treatments. But, as with disabilities, accurate diagnosis is important and this must be over a length of time. It is also important in trying to modify(改进) the behavior to be clear about what is the behavior you are expecting. Make sure it is a rational expectation. For example, expecting a three-year-old to sit quietly through a long church service may not be reasonable, or demanding that a six-year-old should do extra home work after a long day of school and extracurricular activities may be stretching the child’s concentration and attention too far. Since some behavior disorders result from shocking and upsetting life experiences or brain injury, treatments should include helping the child to resolve(解决)and heal emotionally from the experience. The behavior could be corrected through emotional healing. In other words, when a human being is emotionally healthy, that is, can be aware of his intelligence and enthusiasm for life and his loving connectedness to other human beings, he automatically “behaves” rationally. Therefore, what counts is to have the same determination as the boy did. (30’) Life without a dream proves to be a frozen field. However, the dream turns out to be on empty slogan unless you devote the constant efforts to fulfilling it. Nobody can achieve anything without persistence. Accordingly, one of the secrets to success is holding fast to your dream whatever it happens. I have a dream that one day I can make a commitment to the education in the remote places where children are thirsty for knowledge. I hope that my devotion will make a difference to their lives. To realize the dream not only should I equip myself with abundant knowledge but also inspire more people to join me in helping those poor children. After all, many hands make light work. (151’) 听力原文: Text 1 M: Mary, why won’t you watch the 56th Annual Grammy Awards on TV? W: Oh, I’m studying for a Spanish test. Test 2 M: Can I help you, madam? W: Yes, thank you. I seem to have lost my room key. M: Take it easy. You can go to the front desk to get the spare one. Text 3 M: How about meeting at twenty to six? W: Well, could we make it twenty past six? M: That’s a bit late for me. I have to meet my son. I could manage ten past six. W: It’s settled. See you then. Text 4 M: Jane, who are you going on holiday with this summer? W: My aunt. She is coming home from America. M: Where are you going? W: I’ve already booked two first class tickets to Korea. But my aunt wanted to go to Japan. Text 5 M: Jessica, you needn’t come to work tomorrow. W: This news comes as a shock. Would you tell me the reason? M: I know you have been working very hard, but your work does not reach the standard required. Text 6 M: Could you recall how you lost your cell phone? W: After visiting a park, I did some shopping in a supermarket. Then I went back to my hotel. Perhaps I left it in the taxi to my hotel. I’m not sure. M: OK. Don’t worry. Can you remember the number of the taxi? W: Yes. It’s likely that the taxi is marked with T-3345. M: We’ll get in touch with the taxi company as soon as possible. If you have other clues, please call us. Text 7 W: There’s a new musical at the Orpheum theatre this weekend. Would you like to go? M: I don’t really care for musicals. Are there any Shakespeare plays on? W: There’s just A Midsummer Night’s Dream on at the Poseidon. But, we just saw that last year. M: What’s playing at the Caldonion theatre? W: An Italian opera named The Magic Flute. M: We could go to see that. I do like operas. Maybe we should invite Joan to go with us. I remember once that she said she loves operas. W: That’s a good idea. We haven’t seen her for a while. That would be fun. M: I’ll give her a call tonight after dinner. And you call for tickets. OK? W: Great! Text 8 M: Hi, Wendy. I’m going to Isabel’s. Are you coming? W: No. The things there are too expensive for me. I can’t afford them. M: Don’t worry. Isabel’s is having a clearance sale, and today is the last day. W: Really? That’s wonderful. Can you wait a second? I need to change. M: All right, but hurry up. W: Should we ask Cindy to come along? She saw an evening dress made of silk there last month which she liked very much. M: She has already bought that evening dress. W: When? M: Yesterday. She wore that dress last night, and showed off to everybody at Mr. Miles’ party. W: Oh! That isn’t like her. M: Hurry up, will you? We’ll have to go to a gas station first. We’d better be there before lunch. W: All right, all right. I’m ready now. Let’s go. Text 9 W: To start with, tell me about your education, please. M: All right. I shall graduate from Columbia University of Foreign Studies next year. I major in international trade. W: Are you single or married? M: I’m still single. I’d rather secure my career before settling down in a family. W: That’s the kind of man we are looking for. Our promotion work needs much travel. So, do you mind many business trips? There will be six to ten times traveling abroad a month. M: Six to ten? Oh, that is indeed… W: OK. So I would say this work is indeed demanding. M: Er… I think it will be a challenge for me, but I am glad to take it. W: It has been pleasant talking with you. We’ll notify you of our final decision within one week. M: Thank you, Mrs. Hudson, for your interview with me. I hope to see you again. W: Goodbye. Text 10 M: Hi, everyone! Welcome to my blog. Here is the message I promised you. Last weekend we were taken around London in a bus. It was fantastic. I saw Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, the lions in Trafalgar Square, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. I liked the Tower of London best because it is a thousand years old. They say there are lots of ghosts walking around but I didn’t see any! We also went to see all the famous people made of wax(蜡) at Madame Tussauds(杜莎夫人蜡像馆).That was good fun. Jean Louis took a photograph of me standing next to Queen Elizabeth the Second. Tomorrow we’re going to Stratford on Avon where Shakespeare was born. And we’re going to see one of his plays. It’s called Hamlet. There are three theaters in Stratford and we are going to see it in the Royal Shakespeare Theater. Our teacher told us the houses in Stratford are about five hundred years old and the countryside is beautiful, so I’ll take lots of photos to show you.查看更多
