‎ A Decisionmaking under Stress A new review based on a research shows that acute stress affects the way the brain considers the advantages and disadvantages, causing it to focus on pleasure and ignore the possible negative(负面的) consequences of a decision.‎ The research suggests that stress may change the way people make choices in predictable ways.‎ ‎“Stress affects how people learn,” says Professor Mara Mather.“People learn better about positive than negative outcomes under stress.”‎ For example, two recent studies looked at how people learned to connect images(影像)with either rewards or punishments. In one experiment, some of the participants were first stressed by having to give a speech and do difficult math problems in front of an audience; in the other, some were stressed by having to keep their hands in ice water. In both cases, the stressed participants remembered the rewarded material more accurately and the punished material less accurately than those who hadn't gone through the stress.‎ This phenomenon is likely not surprising to anyone who has tried to resist eating cookies or smoking a cigarette while under stress—at those moments, only the pleasure associated with such activities comes to mind. But the findings further suggest that stress may bring about a double effect. Not only are rewarding experiences remembered better, but negative consequences are also easily recalled.‎ The research also found that stress appears to affect decisionmaking differently in men and women. While both men and women tend to focus on rewards and less on consequences under stress, their responses to risk turn out to be different.‎ Men who had been stressed by the coldwater task tended to take more risks in the experiment while women responded in the opposite way. In stressful situations in which risktaking can pay off big, men may tend to do better; when caution weighs more, however, women will win.‎ This tendency to slow down and become more cautious when decisions are risky might also ‎ help explain why women are less likely to become addicted than men: they may more often avoid making the risky choices that eventually harden into addiction.‎ ‎1.We can learn from the passage that people under pressure tend to ________.‎ A.keep rewards better in their memory B.recall consequences more effortlessly C.make risky decisions more frequently D.learn a subject more effectively ‎2.According to the research, stress affects people most probably in their ________.‎ A.ways of making choices B.preference for pleasure C.tolerance of punishments D.responses to suggestions ‎3.The research has proved that in a stressful situation, ________.‎ A.women find it easier to fall into certain habits B.men have a greater tendency to slow down C.women focus more on outcomes D.men are more likely to take risks ‎3. D 细节理解题。根据文章第七段“Men who had been stressed by the coldwater task tended to take more risks in the experiment while women responded in the opposite way.”可知D为正确选项。学%‎ B Rae and Bruce Hostetler not only work very hard, they also relax just as well.Numerous vacations help the couple to maintain their health and emotional wellbeingand it’s no surprise to health care professionals.‎ ‎“Rest, relaxation, and stress reduction are very important for people’s wellbeing and health. This can be accomplished through daily activities, such as exercise and meditation, but vacation is an important part of this as well,” said primary care physician Natasha Withers ‎ from One Medical Group in New York.Withers lists a decreased risk of heart disease and improved reaction time as some of the benefits from taking some time off.“We also know that the mind is very powerful and can help with healing,so a rested, relaxed mind is able to help the body heal better,” said Withers.‎ Psychologists confirm the value of vacations for the mind.“The impact that taking a vacation has on one’s mental health is great,” said Francine Lederer,a clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who specializes in stress and relationship management.“Most people have better life perspective and are more motivated to achieve their goals after a vacation, even if it is a 24hour timeout.” The trips could be good for their health, good for their family and good for their businesses.‎ The online travel agency Expedia conducted a survey about vacation time in 2010,and according to their data the average American earned 18 vacation days—but only used 14 of them.France topped the list, with the average worker earning 37 vacation days and using all but two of them.Americans’ responses may not be surprising in a culture where long hours on the job often are valued, but that’s not always good for the individual, the family or the employer.‎ Psychologists have also found that people who don’t take enough time to relax may find it harder to relax in the future.“Without time and opportunity to do this, the nerve connections that produce feelings of calm and peacefulness become weaker, making it actually more difficult to shift into lessstressed states,” Mulhern said.‎ ‎4.How did the author introduce the topic of the text?‎ A.By making comparisons. It was a rainy Sunday and my father had recently died. I asked my mom if Dad had gone to heaven. "Yes, honey. Of course." she said.‎ ‎"Can we write him a letter?"‎ She paused, the longest pause of my short life, and answered, "Yes."‎ My heart jumped. "How? Does the mailman go there?" I asked.‎ ‎"No, but I have an idea." Mom drove to a party store and returned with a red balloon. I asked her what it was for.‎ ‎"Just wait, honey. You'll see." Mom told me to write my letter. Eagerly, I got my favorite pen, and poured out my six-year-old heart in the form of blue ink. I wrote about my day, what I learned at school, how Mom was doing, and even about what happened in a story I had read. For a few minutes it was as if Dad were still alive. I gave the letter to Mom. She read it over, and a smile crossed her face.‎ She made a hole in the corner of the letter where she looped the balloon string. We went outside and she gave me the balloon. It was still raining.‎ ‎"Okay, on the count of three, let go. One, two, three."‎ The balloon, carrying my letter, darted upward against the rain. We watched until it was swallowed by the mass of clouds.‎ Later I realized, like the balloon, that Dad had never let his sickness get him down. He was strong. No matter what he suffered, he'd persevere, hang on, and finally transcend this cold world and his sick body. He rose into sky and became something beautiful. I watched until the balloon disappeared into the gray and white and I prayed that his strength was hereditary.
