So some scholars say that the wallet is heading for extinction. It will die off with the generation who read printed newspaper. The kind of shopping where you hand over notes and count out change in return now happens only in small retail(零售) counters, like buying a bar of chocolate or a pint of milk from a corner shop. At the shops where you spend any real money, that money is increasingly abstract. At the most famous retail store Victoria Beckham on Dover Street, you don’t have to stand at any kind of cash register when you decide to pay. The staff are equipped with iPads to take your payment while you relax on a sofa. Wherever you go, you can get an excellent service, if you have the money. But across society, the abstraction of the idea of cash makes me uneasy. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned. But earning money isn’t quick or easy for most of us. Isn’t it a bit weird(怪异的) that spending it should happen in half a blink of an eye? But I’ll leave the economics to the experts. What bothers me about the death of the wallet is the change it reflects in our physical environment. The opposite of a wallet is a smartphone or an iPad. When we pay for anything, instead of digging through pieces of paper and peering into corners in a wallet, what we need to do is to move our fingers left and right. Show your wallet, if you still have one. It may not be here much longer. 21. According to the text, customers can pay their bills _________ in big modern stores. A. secretly B. separately C. electronically D. mentally 22. What makes the writer feel uncomfortable nowadays? A. Saving money is out of date. B. Spending money is so fast and easy. C. Earning money is getting more difficult. D. The pleasure of spending money is fading. 23. The writer implies that_________. A. he likes the nature of his wallet B. he is against technological progress C. he feels insecure about the changes of the modern D. he wants to return to the old traditions of the old society. B Some of the best thing in life don’t happen until you grow old enough to recognize them. I can say that about tea. I didn’t start to drink tea until I was 35. The first time I felt a genuine urge to drink tea was in 2003, when I stayed briefly in the United Kingdom. After a time of consuming local food, I started to really like strong black tea. I took packs of green tea with me as gifts but was disappointed to find my British friends preferred much stronger black tea from Sri Lanka. Later I learned that although people know China for its tea, it ranks only third among the world’s black tea exporters, after Sri Lanka and Kenya. After I came back to China and started to cover food stories, I met friends in the tea-drinking circle and learned more. Although the majority of the rest of the world drinks black tea, which the Chinese call “red tea”, China process and drinks mostly green tea. I feel lucky to be Chinese because of the great variety of tea available in the country. It is estimated that there are more than 2000 tea in China if you divide them geographically, including more than 600 locally famous tea. A more simple way to categorize it is by color and extent of fermentation(发酵). That comes down to six main categories—green, white, yellow, dark greenish(oolong), red and black tea. Tasting tea can be compared to our life. It can be plain and predictable but sometimes it is full of pleasant surprises. Occasionally it can even seem too good to be true. The best thing is , you know there’s always more to explore. 24. Which country ranks first among the world’s black tea exporters? A. China B. Sri Lanka C. Kenya D. United Kingdom 25. The writer of this passage works as a ___________. A. journalist B. manager C. scientist D. tea grower 26. All of the following statements about tea in China are true EXCEPT__________. A. varieties of tea is planted and produced each year in China B. tea in China can be divided into more than 2000 categories geographically C. tea in China can be categorized by color and extent of fermentation D. all tea in China can be divided into six categories with no exceptions 27. What column does this passage belong to in a newspaper? A. World B. Business C. Lifestyle D. Travel C How did the ancient Chinese keep food warm in winter? Facilities like electric rice cookers, microwaves, and electric kettles, make it easy for people to keep food warm and enjoy a comfortable winter. So how did Chinese people in ancient times keep food warm in winter without these? In fact, ancient Chinese people used their own methods of heat preservation as early as the Shang and Zhou dynasties. ● “Wen Ding”, ancient rice cooker One of the major functions of an electric rice cooker is to keep food warm. The “Wen Ding”, an ancient cooking container, served the same purpose, but instead of using electric energy, the ancient cooking container preserved heat by burning fuels like charcoal. The “Wen Ding” unearthed in Nanjing in 1989 is thought to be the oldest of its kind discovered in China, dating back to the Stone Age, The craftsmanship of making the “Wen Ding” was developed in the Bronze Age. The bronze Ding from Shang and Zhou dynasties took on different shapes and structures. ● “Ran LU”, ancient small hot pot The “Ran LU” is a small size cooking vessel (器皿)made of bronze, which can be divided into three parts. A charcoal stove forms the main structure, with a bottom tray to hold charcoal ashes, and a movable cup at the top. Some experts have concluded that the vessel’s structure suggests it may have been used as a small hot pot and that these vessels became popular in the Warring States Period(475—221 BC) ●Bronze You, ancient kettle The Bronze You was one of the most common wine containers during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The Bronze You can also be used to warm wine. For example, the Bronze You with beast mask design, unearthed in Jiangxi province, has an opening where charcoals could be placed. Just as people today can’t do without an electric kettle, the Bronze You allowed people to enjoy a hot drink. ●Bronze Yan, ancient steamer Although the “Wen Ding” was effective at keeping food warm, the ancient Chinese people later found that its burning produced pollution. As a result, the Bronze Yan was made with a two-tier structure and used to steam rice and other grains. After the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25-AD 220), further improvements to the Bronze Yan led to the modern-day steamer. 28. When did the “Ran LU” become popular? A. In the Zhou Dynasty B. In the Warring States Period C. In the Eastern Han dynasty D. In the Stone Age 29. The Bronze You, unearthed in Jiangxi province, has an opening to______. A. store wine B. pour water C. place charcoals D. hold charcoal ashes 30. What is the unique advantage of the Bronze Yan? A. It is warm B. It is convenient C. It is environment-friendly D. It is useful 31. Among the following products, which one may have the longest history? A. The “Wen Ding”. B. The “Ran LU”. C. The Bronze You D. The Bronze Yan D Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don't even notice that they're doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of. A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won't feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don't keep your legs crossed. Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness and temporary paralysis (麻痹) of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle—what we know as that “pins and needles” sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run. 32. What can we learn about crossing one's legs? A. It is a very bad social habit. B. It can do harm to people's health. C. It is usually practiced deliberately. D. It can make others feel uncomfortable. 33. According to the study, sitting with your legs crossed can______. A. affect your blood pressure B. resist gravity effectively C. lead to heart attacks easily D. improve the function of legs 34. In the third paragraph “pins and needles” probably means______. A. being highly flexible B. being a little tired C. serious muscle injuries D. slight sharp pains 35. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To compare common habits. B. To evaluate effects of an experiment. C. To give readers some advice. D. To introduce research methods. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 For many people, history classes are seen as no more than requirements for getting degrees in chemistry, biology, business, marketing, etc. 36 Below are a few reasons why it’s vital that today’s people continue to learn about the past. Understanding where people come from plays a key role in understanding who they are. 37 For this reason, it’s extremely important to learn history in order to understand why people are the way that they are. Through history classes, you can experience a shift (改革) in the way you think. 38 It’s important to develop minds to be able to consider problems from different angles. Finally, this shift can improve your ability to analyze and understand situations, to make educated decisions and to learn how to weigh the consequences related to each choice before you. 39 The idea that history repeats itself is rooted in truth. From wars to fashion to political trends, historians are often able to make predictions about the future based upon the past. By having a deep understanding of what happened in the past, today’s people can better prepare for brighter futures by making the right decisions—instead of repeating old mistakes. Many people may not believe that a degree in history can lead to a well-paying job. In fact, students who graduate with degrees in history can become lawyers, business owners, think tank members, educators, leaders in historical organizations writers and so on. 40 . A. Whichever you take, it can provide a comfortable life. B. Learning about history can change how you think. C. That means you look at things from a new point of view. D. Learning from the past prevents future mistakes. E. The key to enjoying the study of history is to find classes that interest you. F. But the truth is that studying history is a wonderful way to prepare for a successful future. G.
