The Season brings along with it strong winds and snow-an environment that’s never comfortable to be in. This unpleasant and even frightening aspect of winter can often be seen in literature. In Shakespeare’s King Lear(1606), the king has given away his kingdom and been rejected by his two ungrateful daughters. He is out in the winter cold, suffering things that are usually reserved for the poorest and most unfortunate human beings. The winter is bad enough for Lear, but being abandoned by his family is worse. A song from another Shakespeare play, As You Like It(1599),is fitting for this poor old man’s situation: “Blow, blow, thou winter wind, /Thou art not so unkind /As man’s ingratitude(忘恩负义)”. Here, winter is used to bring out the ugliness of inhumanity(不人道). There aren’t many things that are worse than winter, according to Shakespeare. Once winter became less of a threat to human beings ,literary works featuring it became more positive. Since Charles Dickens, the representation of the season in literature has often featured happy Christmas celebrations. The cold of the winter weather provides a contrast to the fun going on indoors. Dickens’ A Christmas Carol(1843)was the start of this, but Christmas is still a common, cheery element(元素) in stories that feature winter scenes today. Consider the joy felt by Harry Potter and his friends in J. K. Rowling’ s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone(1997)as they sit down for their festive meal : “Harry had never in all his life had “such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas; tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce”. It is almost as much a pleasure to read about the meal as it might have been to eat it. Although winter stil1 isn’t the most cheerful season in novels and poems, it’s safe to say that writers have certainly “warmed up” since Shakespeare’s days. 25. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing this article? A. To recommend some winter stories in literature. B. Tc explain what winter is like in literary works. C. To describe certain customs that are related to winter. D. Tc tell us why winter is described as unpleasant in literature. 26. What can we learn from Shakespeare’s works? A. Shakespeare didn’t like winter for its bad weather. B. King Lear dies of cold one night during winter. C. Winter is a time to think about our family members. D. Winter is compared with the ugly side of humanity. 27. The author mentions Charles Dickens in the article because . A. a lot of his works are relevant to winter B. he is the most popular author of winter’ stories C. he started a new way of representing winter D. his works make people feel cheerful in winter 28. The example of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is used mainly to show . A. traditional Christmas food makes the winter cheery B. Christmas is still a symbol of joy in modern stories C. it’s a pleasure to read Christmas-related books in winter D. winter has become the happiest season in literary works C It’s funny how ordinary decisions turn out to be life-changing ones. This is exactly what happened in Darshan Chandan’s case. An email he shot off to a restaurant, after being deeply disappointed with the service he got there, just changed the course of Darshan’s life. When the restaurant manager apologized for the poor service and offered to give him free food, Darshan refused the offer and asked them to feed poor children instead. The restaurant went ahead with his suggestion, and after feeding the children, sent pictures to Darshan. “This is the moment that changed me forever. The smile on the faces of those children left me touched. And that is when I decided to do something about it, ”he says. Thus, the BhookMitao campaign was born. On June 7, 2016, Darshan and his friends went and fed a couple of children in a slum(贫民窟) in Vadodara, Gujarat. With the volunteer network growing, nowadays, Darshan makes different groups of his volunteers take up a particular spot in the city. For instance, in Vadodara, there are 10 spots, where the children are fed. On Mondays, Darshan and his friends decide what the menu for the coming Sunday is going to be. They get the raw materials from those who want to donate(捐赠) and cook the meals in their own kitchens. “When people contact us saying they want to donate we tell them we only accept raw materials,” Darshan says. The program usually begins at 11 o’clock in the morning. They screen movies on education or make the children do some craft work and so on before lunch is served. The movement which started in Vadodara spread to four more cities—Gandhidam, Adipur, Nadiad, and Kosamba. And two months ago, it spread to Mumbai as well. The movement has received recognition from Lions Club, Rotary Club, etc. and Darshan was given the Awal Gujarati Award by Radio City. 29. What was the direct cause of the BhookMitao movement? A. The pictures with kids being fed. B. The email sent to the restaurant. C. The restaurant manager’s apology. D. The restaurant’s service for poor children. 30. With the development of the volunteer network, Darshan has . B. divided it into groups to feed kids A. received a lot of cash donations D. built many kitchens for the movement C. employed a large number of staff 31. Besides providing kids with free food, Darshan and his friends also . A. make some kids return to school B. lead the kids to do some fun activities C. allow the kids to join in the cooking D. encourage more people to care for kids 32. In how many cities is the BhookMitao movement available? A. Four. B. Five. C. Six. D. Seven. D Who are these people rushing by you in the street? More than 215 million people now call America “home”, but most of them can trace their families back to other parts of the world. If you look at the names on shop windows, you will see that Americans come from many different lands. The idea that these people, who once were strangers to the United States, have lost the customs and cultures of their original countries and have become “American”is really not true. In fact, what exists in America is more often a kind of “side-by-side” living in which groups of people from other countries often have kept many of their customs and habits. They join the general American society only in certain areas of their lives--such as in schools, business, and sports—but they keep many of their own native customs and manners socially and at home. This living “side-by-side” has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it may cause disagreements to develop between groups whose ways of life are very different from one another. However, there are also great advantages that come from the variety of cultures brought by settlers from other lands. There is great freedom of choice among ideas and dress, food, and social customs in America. Everyone can find some part of his or her familiar world in the United States, in churches, music, food, national groups, or newspapers. 33. According to the passage, people in the USA . A. share American customs and culture B. live in a kind of “side-by-side” society C. keep their own customs and habits firmly D. make no choice to accept American customs 34. Which of the following statements is true? A. They always stick to their own customs and habits. B. “Side-by-side”living style is not suitable. C. They face the society they are not familiar with. D. The advantages coming from the variety of cultures make life in America colorful. 35. Which is the best title for this passage? A. Advantages and Disadvantages. B. Different Customs and Habits. C. Home for the People. D. “Side-by-side”Living Style in America. 第二节(共5小题; 每小题2 分, 满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项 The last thing you want is a bad grade on a paper that took a lot of hard work and time. 36 . This picture illustrates that many students are highly dependent on their phones, 63 (overlook)the importance of personal studies. However, as far as I am concerned, the phones play 64 important but not indispensable role in students’ education. There is no denying the fact 65 mobile phones have brought much convenience, but we are not 66 (suppose)to rely on them too much in the process of study. In the first place, we should have a good command of knowledge on our own to cope with 67 (vary)situations without phones at hand. In the second place, it is our personal knowledge that 68 (promote)the development of phones. Without the basic education at school, the phones can’t appear in our life. There is also something that you can do to change this situation. First, try to invite some of your classmates to take part in some activities together after school. This will help you understand each other better than communicating with others. Then, help your classmates when they are in trouble and ask them to help you when you have difficulty. I believe you will make many new friends and you will have a happy school life there. Yours truly, Li Hua 查看更多
