2020届人教版高考英语选修6练习:Unit5Thepowerofnature
选修6 Unit 5 The power of nature Ⅰ.阅读理解 A A hurricane approaches when the wind goes in the counterclockwise (逆时针) direction at sea level accompanied by a non-stop thunderstorm. But when the wind starts blowing at more than 74 miles per hour, then the occurring situation is regarded as a hurricane. When the speed of the wind crosses 110 miles per hour, the hurricane can cause severe damage to life and property. Several weather data reports are observed and analysed to track tropical storms. But when storms are building up, satellite images are used to determine its location, strength, and progress over the following five days. Generally, a hurricane warning is announced 48 hours before it makes landfall. Approximately 3 to 4 days before hurricane landfall, the surface of the sea will see a considerable wave of 3 to 6 feet. The waves will strike the shore about every 9 seconds. The tide gets really rough before 24 hours, owing to the speed of the wind which can reach around about 34 miles per hour. Seventy-two hours before landfall, the atmospheric pressure is stable. The pressure begins to fall, 36 hours before landfall. When the hurricane is 12 hours away, the strong force wind carries along loose debris(残骸) with it. As the hurricane approaches, and is just 6 hours away, the wind speed crosses 90 miles per hour. Seventy-two hours before landfall, the sky is dotted with cumulus (积云). The cirrus clouds are visible in the sky, only 36 hours before landfall. People living in low-lying areas are now asked to leave their places. Eighteen hours before landfall, it begins to pour. The rains are heavy and continuous till the hurricane stops. The dark clouds which are all set to bring heavy downpour can be seen 12 hours before landfall. 1. According to the passage, an approaching hurricane . A.leads to extraordinary losses if the wind blows at 74 miles per hour B.should be observed and announced five days before it makes landfall C.can be confirmed by just analysing weather data reports of tropical storms D.starts if the sea wind keeps blowing in a certain direction with a thunderstorm 2. The third paragraph is mainly about the hurricane warning signs of the . A.sea B.wind C.cloud D.rain 3. What can be observed 72 hours before landfall? A.The rain starts to pour. B.The tide becomes really tough. C.Cumulus appears in the sky. D.The wind blows at 34 miles per hour. 4. We can infer that people in low-lying areas should move from their places when . A.the atmospheric pressure begins to fall B.waves strike the shore every 9 seconds C.the dark clouds bring heavy downpour D.loose debris flies out with strong winds B The Island Rule is one of the best explanations scientists could give to the observable phenomenon that animals and humans have evolved(进化) depending on the resources available in their habitats(栖息地). Through time, scientists have noticed through fossil(化石) records that some large animals from mainland habitats have dwarf(矮小的) versions in bland habitats. A report from BBC described the existence of what scientists call “hobbit island” of a small island somewhere in Indonesia. It was given such a name because fossil records of tiny, human-like creatures have been found in the region. “Hobbits” are only as tall as one metre and are small versions of early human species with tinier brains. Though scientists cannot perfectly trace the origin of the “Homo Floresiensis”, they believe that they are human relatives, but it is the “island life” that has caused them to evolve as they have. Scientists have noticed through fossil records and existing organisms(有机体) today that it seems that large animals grow small in smaller islands while small animals grow large in larger islands. In theory, animal and human bodies have adjusted to the available food and fresh water in their habitats. Since there is no opportunity for them to leave their island, they might as well adapt. New York explained that islands usually have fewer predators(捕食者) than mainland ecosystems. However, it is the lack of resources that causes the death of many animals. As a means of natural adaptation, the bodies of these animals have evolved smaller than their ancestors, making their bodies require fewer resources. A report from WebEcoist listed down a few examples of animals that have shrunk significantly compared with their ancestors. Some of these include Bali tigers as small as leopards(豹). 5. How did the name “hobbit island” come from? A.Scientists discovered dwarf people living on the island. B.One metre tall human being made a living on these islands. C.Scientists found human species with tinier brains on an island. D.Evidences showing tiny, human-like creatures on the island were found. 6. What do you know about “Hobbits”? A.They used to only live somewhere in Indonesia. B.They were the earliest ancestors of human beings. C.They look smaller compared with normal humans. D.They gradually grew larger on larger islands. 7. According to New York, . A.animals on islands lack enough food to live on B.many animals died off for no apparent reason C.too many predators will do damage to the ecosystem D.predators make island animals turn smaller 8. What can be inferred from the text? A.More predators can help animals grow stronger and larger. B.Bali tigers turn small because of their adaptation to the environment. C.More food resources should be provided to islands. D.Animals on the mainland are fiercer than those on islands.
