This is because they can make impressive movements when they dive. The name “humpback”, which is the common name for this whale, refers to the typical curve shape the whale's back forms as it dives. Sometimes the humpback will dive with a fantastic movement known as a breach. During breaching the whale uses its powerful tail flukes to lift nearly two-thirds of its body out of the water in a giant leap. A breach might also include a sideways twist with fins stretched out like wings, as the whale reaches the height of the breach. A humpback whale breathes air at the surface of the water through two blowholes which are located near the top of the head. It blows a double stream of water that can rise up to 4 metres above the water. The humpback has a small dorsal fin located towards the tail flukes about two-thirds of the way down its back. Other distinguishing features include large pectoral fins, which may be up to a third of the body length, and unique black and white spots on the underside of the tail flukes. These markings are like finger prints: no two are the same. Humpback whales live in large groups. They communicate with each other through complex “songs”. Quick Facts Size: 14m-18m in length; 30-50 tons in weight Living Open ocean and shallow coastline waters Environment From warm tropical waters, where they breed, to cold polar waters, where they eat Diet:[来源:学*科*网] Shellfish, plants and fish of small size Hunting: Sometimes in groups, in which several whales form a circle under the water, blowing bubbles that form a “net” around a school of fish. The fish are then forced up to the surface in a concentrated mass. Current state: Endangered: it is estimated that there are about 5000-7500 humpback whales worldwide 21.According to Quick Facts, a humpback whale _____. A. cannot survive in waters near the shore B. doesn't live in the same waters all the time C. lives mainly on underwater plants D. prefers to work alone when hunting food 22.To make a breach, a humpback whale must _____. A. use its tail flukes to leap out of the water B. twist its body sideways to jump high C. blow two streams of water D. communicate with a group of humpbacks 23.From the passage we can learn that a humpback whale _____. A. has its unique markings on its tail flukes B. has black and white fingerprints[] C. gets its name from the way it hunts D. is a great performer due to its songs B One winter, my cousin and I were playing toy blocks in the yard. My mom was out for shopping to get groceries and my dad was asleep upstairs in his room. Suddenly, it started to snow. First it was just a little. But then it started to pour heavily. Then, we put the finishing touches to our blocks and headed back inside. Right when I opened the sliding glass door, my cousin fell down on the slippery wooden stairs. I let go of the door, my worst mistake, you see. The door locks automatically but I had put a rock, right next to the door so it wouldn’t close. But while I was running to my cousin’s aid I’d accidentally kicked the rock. Now, my cousin and I were locked outside. And unfortunately it started to get really windy. It was really freezing with the snow. First we started to call my dad, but he was sleeping soundly. I mean, slept through a tornado soundly. It was of no use. Then I tried to climb over the fence but it didn’t work because the fence was iced by snow and wind, and the fence is six feet high. So, I climbed up to my tree house and brainstormed some ideas on ways to get in. At one point, I was seriously considering jumping out of the tree house and using the trampoline (蹦床) to jump over the fence. So, we got to work. First, I took out the trampoline. Then I started to jump. First try — I almost cracked my head. Second try — this time I convinced my cousin to do it but at the last second, he chickened out. Third try — I jumped and missed but at the last second, my hand caught the fence, and with a lot of pushing I finally climbed over the fence and luckily, I fell on a big snowdrift. Then I got inside and unlocked the door for my cousin to get in. Finally, my mom came back. Then we shared this story with my mom and dad. 24.When the author wanted to jump in, the main problem was that________. A.the fence was icy B.the fence was slippery and high C.the trampoline couldn’t bear the weight D.the trampoline was too small 25.The attitude of the author’s cousin towards jumping on the trampoline seems________. A.passive B.positive C.indifferent D.objective 26.The words “chickened out” (Paragraph 5) most probably mean “________”. A.fell down B.cried out C.jumped up D.backed out 27.Which would be the best title of the text? A.Climbing over the Fence in the Snow B.An Adventure in the Yard C.Friendship Produces Pleasure D.We Are Independent C Forest Schools originated in Sweden in the 1950s and spread to other countries, particularly Denmark where they have become an important part of the Danish early years program. In a typical Danish Forest School, young children from 3 years are taken into the forest for 4 hours each day of the week. They take no toys with them, but instead use only what the forest provides (and their imaginations) to develop their games. There is a primitive hut in the forest, which is used in extreme weather. Activities are childled and fun, such as finding small animals or stomping in puddles. Because of high adult to child ratios, children can safely try out activities which are often considered too dangerous, such as climbing trees or lighting fires, and by dressing the children in good protective clothing, they are able to play freely. By setting children small manageable tasks at which they are unlikely to fail, and giving genuine praise, children’s independence and confidence grow. A Swedish scientific study found that children in the Forest School are more balanced and socially capable, have fewer sick days, are more able to concentrate and have better coordination than the city nursery children. The primary reason appeared to be the greater opportunities to play in nature, so that children play for longer at a time, tending not to disturb each other as much as children in the city nursery. The study observed that where children were interrupted, they became irritable, their stress level rose, and their ability to concentrate fell. The study also showed that the Forest School children had 25% fewer sick days than the city children. One reason for this is that the air is nearly always better outside than indoors. Outside a child is not so exposed to virus and bacteria and not so likely to be infected by other children. Another reason may be that, since stress has been shown to have a negative effect on the immune system, high stress levels may be weakening the city children. The Forest School children, on the other hand are in a pleasant, natural, fun and less stressful environment. 28.What kind of activities do the Forest School children have? A.Activities usually played by braver kids. B.Activities which are designed for adults. C.Gradeimproving activities. D.Activities with fun and a certain level of danger. 29.The Forest School children are more able to concentrate because ________. A.they have more interesting things to do B.they are accompanied by adults C.they are not disturbed so often D.they are playing in small groups 30.What does the last paragraph intend to tell us? A.Why the Forest School children are healthier. B.The Forest School children have a healthy diet. C.What affects the city children. D.Why the Forest School children have less stress. 31.Which of the following best describes the Forest School children? A.Free and wild. B.Confident and happy. C.Polite and calm. D.Strong and adventurous. D For thousands of years comets have been a mystery to man. They travel across the sky very fast and have a bright “tail” of burning gas. The comet Tempel 1 has an orbit far outside the orbit of the furthest planet in our solar system, Pluto. It has been there for 4.6 billion years, 133 million kilometers from Earth. Once a little American spacecraft crashed into Tempel 1. The spacecraft had a camera and it took a photograph of the comet every minute before it finally crashed into its surface. The space mission to Tempel 1 cost $335 million and was called Deep Impact. The spacecraft was traveling at 37,000 kilometers per hour when it hit the comet and the crash completely destroyed the spacecraft. But before it hit the comet, the spacecraft took some amazing photographs. The last one was a closeup picture which the spacecraft took just 3 seconds before it crashed into the comet. “Right now we have lost one spacecraft,” said a delighted NASA engineer. Deep Impact was like an American Independence Day fireworks display. It took many years to plan and ended in an enormous explosion. The spacecraft which crashed into the comet was made of copper and was the size of a washing machine. It was dropped from a mothership into the path of the comet and the mothership then photographed the cloud of ice, dust and organic chemicals that rose from the surface of the comet after the crash. The crash completely destroyed the spacecraft but nothing really happened to the comet: experts believe that the crash slowed the comet down by no more than 1/10,000 of a millimeter a second. The aim of the mission was to study for the first time the interior of a comet. The mothership was 480 km from the explosion and observed the crash and the explosion with instruments for 800 seconds. Seven satellites, including the Hubble space telescope, watched the moment of drama, and over the next day and night about 50 telescopes on Earth were watching the distant comet. 32.How many hours did it take for the spacecraft from the earth to touch the comet Tempel 1? A.About 2,500. B.About 3,500. C.About 4,500. D.About 5,500. 33.Which of the following shows the possible orbits and positions of the comet Tempel 1? S=Solar P=Pluto T=Tempel 1 A. B. C. D. 34.Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word in Paragraph 5? A.Position. B.Relation. C.Inside. D.Distance. 35.The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to________. A.inform people the discovery of a new comet B.show the power of America in space C.introduce the knowledge of comets D.introduce an experiment 第二节 (共5小题 ;每小题 1分 ,满分5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项(选项中有两项为多余选项),并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 People who seem to have all the luck are not usually blessed by a shocking amount of good fortune. They simply have a healthy attitude, which enables them to take advantage of their situations. Those who are closed-minded and negative simply don't allow as many good things into their lives, or if good things appear, they don't even recognize them. Having a positive way of organizing your thoughts allows you to create your own luck in everyday life 36 Focus on what you want Whatever you focus on, you tend to get more of. Many people spend time thinking about what they don't want—and that same horrible stuff keeps showing up in their lives 37 Be flexible Closed-minded people don't often come up with solutions, because they see only one way of achieving something. And if that doesn't work out, they just give up. If you open your mind to alternative options and possibilities, you'll find that things start working out where you thought they wouldn't. It seems like luck. 38 Be determined Many celebrities, tycoons(大亨) and business owners are called lucky, with everyone assuming that they got a break(机会) to be where they are now 39 .If you work hard and do the right things, it will be acknowledged, and you will be rewarded with more luck in everyday life. 40 Instead of focusing on what's lacking, look at how lucky you already are. You no doubt have some wonderful friends, family, a roof over your head and food on the table. By acknowledging these things regularly, you can instantly feel more lucky. A.Be grateful for what you have B.Here are the tips for creating your own luck C.Be grateful for the good that came from your past D.But often success is down to determination rather than luck E.Trying something new is a great way of getting more opportunities F.But it's your open-mindedness and flexibility that allow luck to happen G.Instead, paying attention to what you want will make you have more access to luck 第三节 完形填空(共20小题,每小题1分,满分20分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 Flood damage cleanup is an unforgettable experience for me. Take bus No.16, get off at the sixth stop, and you will see the hotel. Text 2 M: Is that a spider? W: Yes, it is. Please don’t let it get near me. I hate spiders. M: Don’t expect me to do anything. I am deathly afraid of all bugs except ladybugs(瓢虫) and fireflies(萤火虫). Text 3 M: If I were you, I’d live in the city instead of going to work by train every day. W: But the country is so beautiful in spring and fall. Text 4 W: What are you planning to do this Saturday? M: I told Peter I’d help him work on his motorcycle. Text 5 M: Natasha! What are you up to? W: Hey, Will. I’m going to return these clothes. I bought my normal size, but they were way too small! I guess I’ve put on a few pounds. M: How about I come with you and we get a coffee afterwards? W: I’d like to, but I’m in a hurry. Text 6 M: Can you type, Jane? W: Yes, I can. M: How many words per minute? W: About 100. M: Hmm. And can you speak any foreign languages? M: Well, in that case, reading and writing in the morning, followed by pronunciation… then listening and speaking in the afternoon. W: I don’t think my pronunciation is that bad, do you? M: No, no, you speak very clearly. W: OK, but I do need more vocabulary. M: If you study vocabulary in the morning, you have to study grammar in the afternoon. What about listening? W: Oh, yes. I certainly need to practice my listening. M: Then your best choice would be to take listening and vocabulary in the afternoon, and writing, reading, and grammar in the morning. W: Do I have to take grammar? M: Well, if you want to improve your writing… Text 9 W: I want to get a new iPhone. M: A new one? You just bought that one two months ago, and you want to get a new one already? W: Yeah, this one has some problems. Look at the screen when I take a picture. I’m going to go to the Apple store and see if they will just let me trade this one in for a new one. I probably won’t have to pay for it since it’s a problem with how the phone was made. M: Do you want to go over there now? I need to get a new case for my iPad. W: I only want to go if we can get lunch first. I’m starving. M: Sure, that sounds fine. W: Oh! And there’s an Adidas store there, too. Would you mind going with me to pick out some new shoes? M: I have to meet a friend at three, so we’ll have to see. Text 10 In 1985, a French television company sent its reporters to the Paris Metro. They took cameras with them to film what happened at the stations in certain situations. They wanted to see what the passengers would do if they saw someone attacked on the platform or in the trains. They acted out scenes in which one person was attacked by other people. The scenes looked real, but they were all done with the help of professional actors. Very few people tried to help, and most passengers pretended not to notice. In one example, a foreigner was attacked by three men. The attack happened on a train that was quite full, and although one man tried to get the passengers to help, they all refused. This behavior is not unusual, as many other studies in countries around the world have shown, but the question is why this happens… Is this a problem in big cities, or would the same thing happen anywhere? Does the number of attackers matter? What about the time of day? To discuss these issues, we have in the studio Professor Vincent Wilson, who is an expert on the subject… 附录2:参考答案 (五) 1—5 BCBCC 6—10 BCCBA 11—15 CCBCC 16—20 BABCA查看更多
