However. there would have been even more if it had not been for a certain hero, who gave his life for others. His name was Anthonius Gunawan Agung, a flight controller in the city of Palu. On that day, September 28th, he was working at the control tower at the Palu Mutiara airport, when an earthquake and tsunami hit the island. Other airport employees hurriedly left the control tower, but Anthonius knew that one plane, with 147 passengers, still needed to be cleared for takeoff. He waited to make sure the plane was safe in the air before trying to save his own life. His last words were "Batik 6321 clear for take-off"'. After that last communication, he felt the Tower leaning toward the ground, falling. In a few more seconds, the tower would fall down. Anthonius had to jump out of the window from the fourth floor. He broke his legs and had multiple serious injuries. With the airport largely disabled, hours passed before a helicopter could arrive to take him to a major hospital. But it was too late. He passed away during the trip. The pilot of the plane, Ricosetta Mafella of Batik Airways, had no idea what was happening on the ground until he was in the air and saw the huge wall of water crashing; down on the island he had just left. Mafella explained, as told here. "I'm in a WhatsApp group with other air traffic controllers and one of them told me that they had asked Agung to get away from the tower. But he said ‘Wait, wait, Batik Air is still here.’ " Mafella described Agung as his "guardian angel". 24. What was Agung doing when the earthquake struck the island? A. Calling for help. B. Asking to leave the tower. C. Remaining at his post. D. Withdrawing from the tower. 25. How did Agung save the passengers on board? A. By telling the pilot to keep calm. B. What is the author's main purpose in writing paragraph 3? A. To show why the helicopter was late. B. To tell us how Agung lost his life. C. To explain why he jumped from the tower. D. To describe how powerful the earthquake was. 27. What can we infer from Mafella's words? A. Agung was devoted to his duty. B. Agung had a stubborn personality. C. Mafella was guilty of Agung's sacrifice. D. Agung was informed of the danger too late. C Pictures of the bird called the red siskin appear on Venezuela's money, on products and in school books. The "Little Cardinal", as the bird is known, is loved by Venezuelans. But the little bird is disappearing from the wild. It has become the sufferer of reducing forests and hunters who want to sell their bright and red feathers. That threat has brought together an international team. They hope to save the bird. The plan is to have farmers plant organic coffee plants, which are covered with branches that make good nesting places for the birds. Once found in the millions, as few as 300 red siskins remain in Venezuela. "They don't have many years left, unless we do something right now," said Miguel Arvelo. Farmers who meet the project's rules will win the right to sell their beans with "Bird Friendly" labels. They will be able to set prices for such "high quality" products that can be five times higher than legal prices set by the government. The male siskin is valued for its red feathers and black head. People cross them with the yellow pet birds to create babies with colorful feathers. The protection of Venezuelan law does not prevent hunters from catching or selling these birds on an illegal international market. "Poor Venezuelan families often catch and sell the birds. The money they receive can feed their children for months, " said Jhonathan Miranda, a biologist. At the same time, a red siskin breeding center is being built at a private zoo in Venezuela. There, 200 birds are expected to be born next year. Scientists keep the places where the birds live a secret to protect them from hunters. They permitted some reporters to photograph a small number of birds at one of those secret places. Twelve or more of the small and red birds flew into sight just as the sun appeared. "It's the first time I've seen so many together," said Miranda. "It gives us hope. " 28. What does the underlined word "They" in paragraph 3 refer to? A. The farmers. B. The red siskins. C. The nesting places. D. The organic coffee plants. 29. How can farmers benefit from the project? A. They can use labels of famous companies. B. They receive dollars as a reward. C. They can sell bean products at a higher price. D. They will produce beans of high quality. 30. What can we infer from the fifth paragraph? A. Children get money by feeding the red siskins. B. The red siskins are usually sold as pet birds. C. Few Venezuelans depend on the red siskins to live. D. Venezuelans catch the red siskins illegally. 31. What is Miranda's attitude toward the future of the red siskins? A. Optimistic. B. Ambiguous. C. Doubtful. D. Tolerant. Delays, cancelations and overcrowding are enough to put off a lot of traveling by train, but the price of a ticket can often be the final straw. Even so it's often the easiest or the only way to get from a certain place to another. 36 . Booking in advance is a good choice. Buying at the ticket office just before you travel is usually the most expensive option. 37 . The cheapest tickets are usually available 12 weeks before you travel and can be purchased online or at the station. Sometimes there's limited availability so the closer you get to travel, the smaller your saving. But even if you're booking the day before and-sometimes-a few hours ahead, it's worth seeing if you can still pick up a slightly cheaper ticket. 38 . Rush-hour trains will cost more. 39 . If you have to travel during these peak hours, it's worth seeing if splitting your ticket will save you cash, particularly on long journeys. This involves buying a ticket for the part of your journey at rush hours, then buying a separate ticket for another part which is out of those hours. Do it right and you won't even have to change trains. If you're not in a rush, you can take the slow train. There are trains which stop at more stations or go via longer route to your destination. 40 . You might even be able to save money by departing from or arriving in a different nearby station. A. You can also choose to travel off-peak B. These are often cheaper than the fast train C. Instead, you should be getting an advance ticket D. so if you can book in advance you'll save some money E. so if you can avoid them you'll find your journey costs less F.
