When looking at scenes, Westerners tend to focus more on central objects than on their surroundings. East Asian cultures, however, emphasize inter-dependence. When Easterners look at a scene, they tend to focus on surroundings as well as the object.‎ Using an experiment involving two tasks, Dr Hedden asked subjects to look at a line simply to estimate its length, a task that is played to American strengths. In another, they estimated the line’s length relative to the size of a square, an easier task for the Asians.‎ The level of brain activity, by tracking blood flow, was then measured by Brain Scanners. The experiment found that although there was no difference in performance, and the tasks were very easy, the levels of activity in the subjects’ brains were different. For the Americans, areas linked to attention lit up more, when they worked on the task they tended to find more difficult—estimating the line’s size relative to the square. For the Asians, the attention areas lit up more during the harder task also—estimating the line’s length without comparing it to the square. The findings are a reflection of more than ten years of previous experimental research into East-West differences.‎ In one study, for instance, researchers offered people a choice among five pens; four red and one green, Easterners were more likely to choose a red pen while Westerners were more likely to choose the green one.‎ Culture is not affecting how you see the world, but how you choose to understand and internalize(使内化)it.‎ But such habits can be changed. Some psychological studies suggest that when an Easterner goes to the West or vice versa, habits of thought and perception also begin to change. Such research gives us clues on how our brain works and is hopeful for us to develop programs to improve our memory, memory techniques and enhance and accelerate our learning skills.‎ ‎56.According to the passage, Chinese people are most likely to ________.‎ ‎ A.more emphasize independent thinking ‎ B.always focus more on their surroundings ‎ C.focus on the context as well as the object ‎ D.think of Westerners as highly independent units ‎57.We know from the passage that people’s brains will be more active when ________.‎ ‎ A.the task is much easier B.the blood flow is tracked ‎ C.people begin to choose colors D.the task is more difficult ‎58.What does Dr Hedden’s experiment in Paragraph 4-5 indicate?‎ ‎ A.Culture has a great impact on the way people talk and behave.‎ ‎ B.Easterners and Westerners perceive the world differently.‎ ‎ C.People’s perception of the world can be changed.‎ ‎ D.Americans are better at calculating than the Asians.‎ B ‎ Slowly but surely, we’re moving closer and closer to ‎5G world. From smart-home security to self-driving cars, all the Internet-connected devices in your life will be able to talk to each other at lightning-fast speeds with reduced delay, Objectively speaking (客观的说), the fastest ‎4G download speeds in the U. S. top out at an average of 19.42 Mbps. But by comparison(对比) ‎5G promises gigabit (千兆) speeds.‎ ‎ “‎5G is one of those signs, along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age,” said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. “The self-driving vehicle is a great emblem of this data age, and that is to say, it is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have large amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors(传感器) are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It’s pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lane. It could be weather information, but also connected infrastructure (基础设施) construction. There’s lots of data behind that task, which is why we need high speed.‎ ‎ Augmented reality(AR) glasses and virtual headset haven’t yet broken the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting(打赌) that these will finally replace our smart phones. With ‎5G, that could actually happen. This is notable(值得注意的)because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist — or perhaps even replace — smart phones.‎ ‎ Ericsson stated at February’s Mobile World Congress how smart glasses could become faster and lighter with a ‎5G connection, because instead of being weighed down with components, the glasses could rely on hardware for processing power.‎ ‎ But don’t get too excited. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the meantime including ‎ various trials to make sure the radios play nicely with hardware and infrastructure construction so ‎5G isn’t concentrated only in big cities.‎ ‎59.What does the author want to stress in Paragraph 1? ‎ ‎ A. The lighting-fast speed of ‎5G.‎ ‎ B. The expectation of ‎5G world.‎ ‎ C. The difference between ‎4G and ‎5G.‎ ‎ D. The internet-connected devices in our life.‎ ‎60. What does the underlined word “emblem” in Paragraph 2 mean?‎ ‎ A. Exhibition B. Success C. Symbol D. Explanation ‎61. We can infer from the text that _________ .‎ ‎ A. ‎5G world won’t come without AR glasses.‎ ‎ B. ‎5G helps to create the artificial intelligence vehicle.‎ ‎ C. Apple company is developing AR glasses worldwide.‎ ‎ D. Tech companies will face the fact that smart phones may be replaced.‎ ‎62. What will the author probably tell us next?‎ ‎ A. How to fully expand ‎5G coverage.‎ ‎ B. Smart glasses will become faster and lighter.‎ ‎ C. Why ‎5G isn’t concentrated in big cities.‎ ‎ D. The importance of infrastructure construction C Kayaking(皮划艇) is an activity enjoyed by many people of all ages. It requires little or no experience and nearly anyone of any skill level can participate. It’s most popular as a summertime sport, but it is also a great activity during the winter. Kayaking also seems relatively friendly to the environment; more so than speed boating or water skiing. Because a kayak doesn’t create large or frequent waves, require fuel, or let off polluted air, it is indeed a fairly safe activity for humans and wildlife alike.‎ Kayaking on freshwater lakes and streams creates little turbulence and therefore does not disturb fish or other aquatic life. Actually, the gentle paddling and movement of the kayak helps to bring seaweed to the surface, making for convenient snacking to the fish. However, there is a ‎ drawback to the all-you-can-buffet for your fishy friends. In addition to bringing food to the surface, kayaking also stirs up litter that’s been hiding beneath the waters. Some aquatic animals will mistake it for food. This could cause the animals to choke on the indigestible litter, leading to death. As hazardous as this sounds, it isn’t very likely for such an event to take place. Most litter in lakes and streams is found along the shoreline and settles in the sand and dirt, and isn’t likely to drift away to the main body of water. . And because kayaks do not have a motor, fish have no risk of getting caught underneath the boat.‎ One potential hazard that results from kayaking is human waste. This depends solely on where you plan to kayak, and if there are resources available (such as campsites) along the shoreline. When there are no facilities in sight, you’re paddling in the middle of a lake, and nature calls, then often you are given no choice but to expel your waste in the middle of the water. While human waste is considered biodegradable, it can be harmful when swallowed by fish. The only preventative measure is to avoid using the water as a restroom. Some public lakes and streams have taken steps to preserve the quality of the water by requiring permits for kayaking. This won’t ease a human waste problem, but does help regulate entry into the lake and prevent it from becoming overcrowded.‎ As an important factor to remember when kayaking is that you are a guest in someone else’s home. You may not be greeted by anyone or be able to kick up your feet and watch TV, but the water is home to many aquatic animals and wildlife. Just as you would not throw trash on the floor or destroy the home of another, you shouldn’t do it outdoors either. Keep all trash with you in your kayak and properly dispose of it after you return to shore. By doing your part, you will help doing your part, you will help keep kayaking a safe and enjoyable activity for yourself and the environment.‎ ‎63.Which of the following statements is true about Kayaking according to the passage?‎ ‎ A.Young people’s enjoyment of kayaking exceeds that of other people.‎ ‎ B.Water skiing has more negative effects on the environment than Kayaking.‎ ‎ C.Usually, kayaking is only practiced in the summer.‎ ‎ D.Whether you can kayak depends on resources available along the shoreline.‎ ‎64.What does “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?‎ ‎ A.Providing aquatic animals with an all-you-can-buffet.‎ ‎ B.Stirring up litter to the surface of the water.‎ ‎ C.That aquatic animals choke to death because of eating the litter.‎ ‎ D.That most litter in lakes and streams is found along the shoreline and settles.‎ ‎65.Which sentence can be put in the blank in paragraph 3?‎ A.Because of their adaptability, kayaks can be useful for other outdoor activities such as diving, fishing, and search and rescue during floods.‎ B.Unlike boats operated by motor and fuel, kayaks pose little or no harm to the fish swimming beneath.‎ C.Contrary to what people may assume, there are a number of unique styles of kayaking based on the type and speed of water involved.‎ D.Sea kayaking is a potentially hazardous pursuit, partly because of the nature of the environment in which we operate.‎ ‎66.Which is the best title of the passage?‎ ‎ A.The environmental impacts of kayaking—is it dangerous?‎ ‎ B.The most popular water sports—kayaking ‎ C.Advantages and disadvantages of kayaking ‎ D.How to keep kayaking a safe and enjoyable activity?‎ D Wisconsin has long been home to incredibly successful research and innovation thanks to our famous academic research institutions and some of the brightest scientific minds. From discovering how Vitamin D can best be absorbed, to unlocking the potential of stem cells, Wisconsin has pioneered remarkable breakthroughs in science that have improved health, saved lives and created jobs. These scientific breakthroughs have not only led to life-saving medical technologies but also have fostered (培育) a strong power in Wisconsin economy.‎ Across America, groundbreaking research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) alone adds millions of dollars to our economy every year. In fact, NIH funding generated an estimated $58 billion in economic output nationwide in 2014. NIH funding spurs economic growth by supporting jobs in research and by generating biomedical innovations that are turned into new products. NIH-supported innovations also influence improvements in health that can ‎ bolster the economy, improve productivity, and reduce illness and disability at home and across the globe. But, budget cuts and inadequate funding for NIH in the past decade have put both medical innovation and our next generation of researchers at risk.‎ Today, too many of our talented young scientists are deciding to do something else, or are leaving the country to pursue their research. Simply put, scientific and medical innovation depends on our ability to foster, support and invest in these new researchers.‎ That is why I have worked across party lines with Senator Susan Collins of Maine and introduced the Next Generation (NextGen) Researchers Act. Our act builds opportunities for new researchers, helps address the debt burden that young scientists face today, and invests in the future of research, science, and innovation. This commonsense proposal would create the “Next Generation Researchers Initiative” within the NIH Office of the Director to coordinate (协调) all current and new NIH policies. The legislation (立法) also directs the NIH to consider recommendations from a National Academy of Sciences (NAS) comprehensive study and report on fostering the next generation of researchers.‎ Finally, we must demonstrate a commitment to our future scientists who, like so many of their peers pursuing other fields, are struggling with crushing student loan debt. Our plan would also increase the amount of loans that can be forgiven through the NIH’s loan repayment programs to better account for the current debt load of new scientists. Higher education should be a path to prosperity, not suffocating debt, and this provision not only helps make higher education more affordable, but can help give new researchers a fair shot at pursuing their dreams.‎ The NextGen Researchers Act will help to empower our next generation of researchers from Maine to Wisconsin, and across our country, with the resources they need to continue to lead the world in groundbreaking biomedical research and development. I’m proud to have earned the support of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and many others, for my bipartisan work supporting Wisconsin’s leadership in science, research and innovation.‎ At a time when America’s young researchers are facing the worst funding in decades, our best and brightest minds deserve to know that our country stands with them and is committed to building a stronger future.‎ ‎67. Why does the author talk about Wisconsin in the first paragraph?‎ ‎ A.To explain why some brightest scientific minds are rewarded for making contributions.‎ ‎ B.To illustrate that Wisconsin takes a lead in scientific breakthroughs and deserves his support.‎ ‎ C.To indicate Wisconsin has made great breakthroughs without the support of NIH.‎ ‎ D.To distinguish Wisconsin’s achievements in science and innovation from the other states’.‎ ‎68. The following are all the ways of NIH promoting America’s economic growth EXCEPT .‎ ‎ A.supporting research jobs ‎ B.encouraging medical innovations ‎ C.improving health and productivity ‎ D.handling budget cuts ‎69. According to the passage, the introduction of the Next Gen Researchers Act is intended to .‎ ‎ A.sing high praise for the work coordinating all current and new NIH policies ‎ B.support and invest in young researchers involved in medical innovation ‎ C.forgive NIH’s current loan debt to make higher education more affordable ‎ D.consider suggestions from NAS’ comprehensive study and report ‎70. What could be the, title of the passage?‎ ‎ A.It’s Time to Strengthen Our Next Generation Researchers Act of NIH Office ‎ B.It’s Time to Strengthen Our Biomedical Research and Development ‎ C.It’s Time to Strengthen Our Commitment to the Next Generation of Researchers ‎ D.It’s Time to Strengthen Our Loan Repayment Programs of NIH 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Get Help When You Need It Sometimes even though you are paying attention in class, studying for tests, and doing your homework, certain classes seem too hard.‎ What upsets many people is that they work harder and harder as they fall further and further behind. _____71_____ If you need extra help, the most important thing to know is that there’s nothing embarrassing about it. No one is expected to understand everything, and people have very different learning styles.‎ ‎_____72_____ He or she may be able to work with you before or after school and explain things more clearly.‎ You might also be able to get some help from another student.
