This passage is probably taken from a(an)_____________ A. poster B. instruction C. textbook D. report B We always can see firelighters holding a hose ( 软 管 ) outside of a burning building, but the Golden Eagles Hotshots don’t fight fires quite that way. When they go into action, you may even see a fire truck. The Hotshots are firefighters who battle fires in wilderness areas. But don’t think you’ll only find them in their home state California. Wherever there is a national wildfire emergency, the Golden Eagles Hotshots could be there. But these firefighters don’t work the same way as firefighters in a big city. They work in areas where there are large numbers of trees, bushes, and grass. They climb up and down steep hills to clear brush and burnable debris(残骸). They sometimes use water, but they often fight fire with fire! They do that by lighting what are called “backfires” which are small, controlled fires that burn up fuel in the path of larger wildfires. That way, when the wildfire gets there, it has nothing to burn and nowhere to go, because all the burnable fuel has already gone up in smoke. The Hotshots also clear away fuel using old fashioned hard work. For example, they use a saw to cut away trees and heavy brush that could catch fire. Of course there are times when the Golden Eagles Hotshots do have trucks to supply water to the fires. But the water is limited, and these guys have to rely on hard work more than anything. Physical fitness is very important. They have to be in great physical shape to handle steep hills and difficult terrain ( 地 形 ) while carrying a 60-pound pack. The Golden Eagles Hotshots definitely work hard for their pay. But thanks to their efforts, many lives have been saved, many houses have not been burned, and countless trees are still standing. 24. the firefighters mentioned in the passage . A. do most of their work in California B. avoid climbing steep hills in their work C. do their work equipped with only advanced tools D. carry out their work mostly in forests and mountains 25. What can we learn about the Golden Eagles Hotshots? A.They are firefighters working in big cities. B. Their work requires physical strength. C. They are voluntary firefighters working for free. D. They usually hold a hose to put out the fires. 26. According to the passage, Why do the firefighters light “backfires” A . To prevent the fire from spreading. B. To signal for help C. To remove barrier D. To protect the trees and bushes 27 . What is the author’s attitude towards the Golden Eagles Hotshots? A. Doubtful. B. Sympathetic. C. Critical. D. Appreciative. C People have different ways of dealing with a common cold. Some take over-the-counter(非处方的)medicines such as aspirin while others try popular home remedies(治疗)like herbal tea or chicken soup. Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold: nothing really cures it. So why do people sometimes believe that their remedies work? According to James Taylor, professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away ontheir own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak, so it’s easy to believe it’s medicine rather than time that deserves the credit, USA Today reported. It still seems hard to believe that we can deal with more serious diseases yet are powerless against something so common as a cold. Recently, scientists came closer to figuring out why. To understand it, you first need to know how antiviral(抗病毒的)drugs work. They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw(拼图), which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3-D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enough. The two cold viruses that scientists had long known about were rhinovirus(鼻病毒)A and B. But they didn’t find out about the existence of a third virus, rhinovirusC, until 2006. All three of them contribute to the common cold, but drugs that workwell against rhinovirus A and B have little effect when used against C. “This explains most of the previous failures of drug trials against rhinovirus,”study leader Professor Ann Palmenberg at University of Wisconsin-Madison, US,told Science Daily. Now, more than 10 years after the discovery of rhinovirus C, scientists have finally built a highly-detailed 3-D model of the virus, showing that the surface of the virus is, as expected, different from that of other cold viruses. With the model in hand, hopefully a real cure for a common cold is on its way.Soon, we may no longer have to waste our money on medicines that don’t really work. 28. What does the author think of popular remedies for a common cold? A. They are quite effective. B. They are slightly helpful. C. They actually have no effect. D. They still need to be improved. 29. How do antiviral drugs work? A. By breaking up cold viruses directly. B. By changing the surface structures of the cold viruses. C. By preventing colds from developing into serious diseases. D. By absorbing different kinds of cold viruses at the same time. 30. What can we infer from the passage? A. The surface of cold viruses looks quite similar. B. Scientists have already found a cure for the common cold. C. Scientists were not aware of the existence of rhinovirus C until recently. D. Knowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure. 31. What is the best title for this passage? A. Drugs against cold viruses B. Helpful home remedies C. No current cure for common cold D. Research on cold viruses D Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well. Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as ‘bracketing’. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside, stepping into his or her shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth. Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don’t want to hear. It wasn’t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic(有疗效的). In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy(心理疗法), before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient’s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever. 32. What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2? A. What to listen to. B. How to listen well. C. Benefits of listening. D. Problems in listening. 33. According to the author, in communication people tend to ________. A. listen purposefully B. listen actively C. set aside their prejudices D. open up their inner mind 34. According to the author, the patients improved mainly because _______. A. they were taken good care of. B. they knew the roots of problems. C. they had partners to talk to. D. they knew they were truly listened to. 35. What type of writing the article likely to be? A. Science fiction B. A news report. C. Popular science D. A medical report. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to keep yourself safe from new virus?
