There are 3 types of the flu:‎ ‎—Type A viruses can infect people birds, pigs, horses, seals, whales and other animals such as avian flu or bird flu.‎ ‎—Type B viruses infect people and result in smaller outbreaks. People infected with type B viruses are often hospitalized with higher death rates.‎ ‎—Type C viruses cause mild illness in humans without the onset of an epidemic.‎ Most people are familiar with the symptoms of the flu, but they can be mistaken for a severe cold. The flu infection is far more serious and can cause severe health complications (并发症). It is better to visit your doctor so other possibilities can be ruled out before receiving treatment.‎ The flu virus attacks the body’s cells and changes into different forms, which is why people who have received the flu shot (流感疫苗接种) may still get ill with the flu. The flu virus is spread through direct contact with infected persons when they have coughed or sneezed. It can also be spread by handling objects that an infected person has touched.‎ If you have the flu, get plenty of bed rest and drink lots of fluids. Most people recover from the flu in one to two weeks. Doctors often recommend flu vaccines(疫苗)for high-risk groups such as young children, the elderly with chronic(慢性的)diseases and weak immune systems(免疫系统), or professionals working with high-risk groups.‎ ‎24. Which of the following is TRUE about bird flu?‎ A. It can spread among humans and animals.‎ B. It doesn’t infect human beings in general.‎ C. It can cause higher death rates among humans.‎ D. Drinking as much water as possible. D. Seeing a doctor to make sure of the disease.‎ ‎26. Why are some people still down with the flu after receiving flu vaccines?‎ A. Because people are easy to catch cold. B. Because the flu is not easy to be treated.‎ C. Because the flu can spread among people.‎ D. Because the flu virus may have different forms.‎ ‎27. What should you do once you are down with the flu?‎ A. Take flu vaccines. B. Take enough bed rest.‎ C. Do more physical exercise. D. Improve immune systems.‎ C The word doping is probably from the Dutch word dop, the name of an alcoholic drinks made of grape skins used by Zulu soldiers in order to encourage their bravery in battle. The term became current around the turn of the 20th century, originally referring to illegal drugging of racehorses. In 1928 the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) became the first to ban the use of doping. A reliable test method was finally introduced in 1974.‎ The practice of enhancing athletes’ performance through foreign substance(物质)or other artificial means, however, is as old as competitive sport itself. The most famous doping case of the 1980s concerned Ben Johnson, the 100-meter champion who tested positive for stanozolol (司坦咗醇) at the Olympic Games in Seoul, 1988.‎ The main front in the anti-doping war has rapidly changed to blood doping since 1970s. Blood doping is the practice of adding red blood cells to the bloodstream in order to improve athletes’ performance. The blood is usually processed in order to create a concentration of red blood cells, and then freeze them until needed for transfusion(输血) back into the athlete shortly before the event. The extra red blood cells will deliver more oxygen and other essential elements to the athlete’s muscle tissues.‎ Just like any other problem, the only way to solve it is through education. Many high school sports programs now have people come in to talk to them about the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs. Young players must be fully clear on the rules and what substances are banned. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) has an easily ‎ accessible list of what substances are banned, how they are tested for and why they are banned on its website. This way, young players are clear on what they can put in their bodies. This is also a good way to educate players on the danger of the substances they may be tempted to use.‎ ‎28. What does the word “enhancing” in Paragraph 2 mean?‎ A. Improving. B. Directing. C. Upsetting. D. Showing.‎ ‎29. What can we know from the third paragraph?‎ A. Blood doping is putting one man’s blood into another man’s.‎ B. Blood doping is easy to be found and controlled by organizations.‎ C. More oxygen in the blood helps improve an athlete’s performance.‎ D. An athlete who takes blood doping needs blood transfusion every day.‎ ‎30. Who does the word “people” in Paragraph 4 refer to?‎ A. P. E. teachers at school. B. Athletes involved in doping.‎ C. Young people addicted to doping. D. Experts who do research in doping.‎ ‎31. Which statement best matches the last paragraph?‎ A. Good medicine tastes bitter. B. Prevention is better than cure.‎ C. A little learning is a dangerous thing.‎ D. Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.‎ D As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly complicated, there are growing concerns that robots could become a threat. This danger can be avoided, according to computer science professor Stuart Russell, if we figure out how to turn human values into a programmable code(代码).‎ Russell argues that as robots take on more complicated tasks, it’s necessary to translate our morals into AI language. For example, if a robot does housework, you wouldn’t want it to put the pet cat in the oven to make dinner for the hungry children. “You would want that robot preloaded with a good set of values,” said Russell.‎ Some robots are already programmed with basic human values. For example, mobile robots have been programmed to keep a comfortable distance from humans. Obviously there are ‎ cultural differences, but if you were talking to another person and they came up close in your personal space, you wouldn’t think that’s the kind of thing a properly brought-up person would do.‎ Robots could also learn values from drawing patterns from large sets of data on human behavior. They are dangerous only if programmers are careless.‎ The biggest concern with robots going against human values is that human beings fail to do enough testing and they’ve produced a system that will break some kind of taboo(禁忌).‎ One simple check would be to program a robot to check the correct course of action with a human when presented with an unusual situation. If the robot is unsure whether an animal is suitable for the microwave, it has the opportunity to stop, send out sounds, and ask for directions from a human. If we humans aren’t quite sure about a decision, we go and ask somebody else.‎ The most difficult step in programming values will be deciding exactly what we believe in moral, and how to create a set of ethical(道德的)rules. But if we come up with an answer, robots could be good for humanity.‎ ‎32. What does the author say about the threat of robots?‎ A. It is becoming more complicated. B. It affects all machines using high technology.‎ C. It can be avoided by introducing human values.‎ D. It makes translation work more difficult.‎ ‎33. How will robots learn human values?‎ A. By keeping a distance from humans. B. By learning about cultural differences.‎ C. By talking directly to human beings. D. By picking up patterns on human behavior.‎ ‎34. What is the solution to the concern with robots going against human values?‎ A. Programming the robot to check with humans.‎ B. Destroying the robot before a danger appears.‎ C. Sending out sounds when the robot goes wrong.‎ D. Going and asking somebody else for directions.‎ ‎35. What can be the best title for the passage?‎ A. The Threat of Robots B. How to Avoid the Danger of Robots C. The Biggest Concern with Robots D. With time going on, I am crazy about having a brother or a sister.‎ ‎ I think it will benefit me a lot. First, I won’t feel lonely any longer. I have a good companion and that will enrich my life, making it lively and interesting. Besides, he or she can help me overcome many difficulties in my life. I can seek advice from him or her. In every stage of life he or she can help me but ask for nothing in return. What specially counts is that having a brother or a sister can promote all-round development of us, benefiting us both physically and mentally. What is equally important is that having a brother or a sister can ease the burden in the future—looking after old parents when they are old or get ill. But for an only child, it is a tiring job.‎ ‎ I do support the idea that the government can find suitable ways to perfect the family planning policy , making a more harmonious society and making people live a better life.‎ ‎(Text 1) ‎ M: So how are your piano lessons going, Isabelle?‎ W: I’m thinking of changing to the violin. Everyone says that teacher at school is really good.‎ M: Yes, he is. Actually it was him that introduced me to the guitar so that’s become the new love of my life. ‎ ‎(Text 2) ‎ M: Could you make that call for me now, Sharon?‎ W: Oh, sorry, Mr King. I’ve just finished typing the letters. Will you take it in your office?‎ M: Uh-huh.‎ ‎(Text 3)‎ W: Can’t we go any faster? We’re supposed to be in the meeting in 20 minutes!‎ M: Sorry, traffic’s backed up in front of us. Look, so many buses are in front of us!‎ W: I knew we should have taken the subway!‎ ‎(Text 4)‎ M: Have you seen Mr Brown yet?‎ W: No, I haven’t. What’s he like?‎ M: Well, he has brown hair and wears glasses. It’s said that he’s a little strict, but quite nice to students.‎ ‎(Text 5) ‎ M: I’d like to have a jacket made, please.‎ W: So what style do you like?‎ M: Just this one. And I’d like a fold at the back of my jacket.‎ W: OK. Take off your coat please. I will take your measurement.‎ ‎(Text 6) ‎ M: Hi, Anna, it’s me.‎ W: Hi, Mel. Have you moved into your new house?‎ M: No, we’ve just packed. Actually, that’s what I was calling about. It turns out that ‎ Linda has to work on Saturday. I was wondering if you could come over and help.‎ W: I really would if I could. But the thing is, I’ve promised to babysit the boys while my sister has her hair done. I just can’t get out of it.‎ M: OK. I understand.‎ ‎(Text 7) ‎ W: Good morning, Mr Wooster. Bill Callahan rang this morning, and he wants to change his meeting with you from this afternoon to ‎8 a.m. tomorrow. Also, Ms Flaxon from the Bermuda Group faxed a file. She’d appreciate a reply by Thursday.‎ M: Morning, Ms Hobbs. Yes, go ahead and move the Callahan meeting to tomorrow, then ring Paul Frazier and ask if he has time for a meeting by telephone this afternoon, say about 3. ‎ W: Very good sir. Also, don’t forget you have a noon lunch today at the Rotary Club.‎ M: Thank you. That reminds me. Could you please phone Dryden’s Dry Cleaners and have them send my blue shirt by 11:30? I’d like to wear that to lunch.‎ W: OK. I’ll do that right away.‎ ‎(Text 8) ‎ M: Hi, Jane. Have you been shopping?‎ W: Yes. I’ve bought some clothes. But I think I’ve got too many different colours.‎ M: Well, that’s a nice white shirt. You can wear that with any colour.‎ W: Yes, I bought it in the same shop as this dress.‎ M: Let me see. What a lovely green! And have you bought a jacket to go with it?‎ W: Yes. It was difficult to find one but I finally got this dark brown one.‎ M: That’s very nice. Did you buy anything else?‎ W: Well, I always wear this red sweater and it’s so old now. So I bought this orange one. And I also bought a coat and some shoes. The coat is a bit expensive. Do you like it?‎ M: Oh yes. You look good in black. And those new black shoes look great with the coat.‎ W: Actually they’re dark blue, not black.‎ ‎(Text 9) ‎ W: Advance Reservations. Can I help you?‎ M: Yes, I’d like to book a single room with bath for September 22 to 25.‎ W: Just a moment, please. I’m sorry, sir. We are fully booked on those dates.‎ M: Oh, that’s too bad. Could you recommend to me another hotel that won’t be full up?‎ W: Yes, of course. Where would you rather like to be, in the city centre or in the suburbs?‎ M: I prefer a place close to the city centre.‎ W: In that case, I would suggest that you try the Imperial.‎ M: Do you know the rate per night for a single room with bath there?‎ W: Well, a single with bath at the moment would run you between $50 and $60.‎ M: I see. Do you mind telling me what the Imperial is like?‎ W: It is rated as a four-star hotel. Ours is better known than the Imperial but then the Imperial is less expensive than here too.‎ M: Uh-huh. One last thing, do you know their telephone number?‎ W: Yes, it is 61540928.‎ M: Thank you very much. I really appreciated your help. Goodbye.‎ W: Goodbye and thank you for calling us.‎ ‎(Text 10) ‎ M: Today, I’d like to say something about the generation gap. One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own lifestyles. In traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and approve of, and often to continue the family occupation. In our society, however, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents. In our upwardly mobile society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the ambitions that parents have for their children are another cause of the division between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other. Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the generation gap. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem ‎ to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature of American life for some time to come.‎
