At the end I said, “ Son, remember: Be slow and steady (镇定的), and that will win the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?” Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?” I was shocked, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!” “He must have wished that,” Sonny said, “Otherwise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.” “He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted. “He won the race by perseverance (毅力), by pushing on steadily.” Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.” I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless. 21. The writer argued (辩论)with his son because ______________. A. he liked tortoises while his son liked hares B. they disagreed about whether the tortoise was foolish C. he tried to teach his son a moral (品德) lesson but the son had totally different opinion D. he liked the story of the hare and the tortoise while his son didn’t. 22. A. are cleverer than Sonny’s generation B. have the same ideas about life as Sonny’s generation C. are more hopeful than Sonny’s generation D. have different ideas about life from Sonny’s generation 23. According to the passage, who do you think learnt a lesson? A. The tortoise B. Sonny C. The hare D. Sonny’s father B Finding summer jobs for teenagers has not always been easy, but now you no longer have to worry about what your kid can do to earn their own money. Recently I found some different sites online that offer information about what kids can do. Below is some of that information, along with questions to think about to help you come up with your own ideas. Ideas for summer work: ●Parks and Recreation Programs. ●Babysitting (当临时保姆) during the day of school. ●Working part-time at a day care(日托) for the summer. ●Car washing. ●Working at local vegetable stands. The easiest way for you to find ways for your child to make money is to think about others’ inconveniences (不方便). Think of things you need done, or would like to have done, and what you would consider paying for these things to get done. Once you have some ideas, you can sit down with your child and talk to them about what they would be interested in doing. Then once you have an idea of what they want to do you can help them come up with fair prices. Preferably you would want to only have your child working with people you know and trust, or at least you could have your child pick a partner. That way with each of them carrying cell phones, even those without service can call 911, they will be much safer. You can find out more information and many more ideas for kids to use to make money during their summer holidays by visiting http://www.kidswantmoney.com. 24. The passage is mainly written for _____. A. teenagers B. teachers C. parents D. website designers 25. Which of the following is NOT considered when teenagers look for summer jobs? A. Who they’d better work for. B. How much should be paid. C. Whether the jobs are safe. D. Where the workplace is. 26. What can we learn about http://www.kidswant-money.com? A. The author set up the website. B. It gives information about educating children. C. People need to pay to visit the website. D. It offers ideas for children to make money. C Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C. to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed. Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left-side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs. No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for right-handedness, he / she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with. Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to. 27. After studying works of art made at different times in history, the scientists found _______. A. the art began from 1,500 B.C. B. the works of art ended in the 1950s C. most people shown in the works of art are right-handed D. most people shown in the works of art are left-handed 28. What is the hand for most people used to do? A. It’s used to find or hold things. B. It’s used to work with things. C. It’s used to make a person’s eyes work together. D. It’s the centre for thinking and doing problems. 29. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true? A. No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed. B. Left-handedness is cleverer than right-handedness. C. Today children are not made to use their right hands only. D. Scientists think there must be some reason why people become left-handed. 30. Maybe I’ll ask Linda to give me some money. (Text 2) W: I’m afraid I can’t come to the party tomorrow night. I have to work on a report for school. M: Well, why don’t you at least try to stop by for a little while? W: OK, then. (Text 3) W: I saw a good band at last Saturday’s rock festival. The singer was great! M: The band with the piano player? W: I didn’t see anything with a piano. The singer was called Queen Cat. She could really dance, too. M: Oh, I know what you mean — the band had three guitars. (Text 4) W: Which do you prefer, magazines or books? M: Um, I prefer reading magazines. Because I like a quick read. W: Yeah, you can pick them up and put them down just after a short reading. And they’re cheaper than books. And sometimes they have interesting ads. (Text 5) M: Can we have a double room, please? W: Certainly. With a bath or a shower? M: We prefer the room which has a shower. (Text 6) M: How was your chemistry exam? W: I thought I was going to get a C in chemistry, but I got a B. My parents will be OK with that. M: You are lucky. I have to make a phone call. W: No. I’m sorry, sir. It’s not allowed. M: It’s only for a short time. W: It’s against the rules. No instruments can be left in reception for security reasons. M: Is there anywhere I can leave them? W: You can leave it at the bag office on the left. M: Where’s that? W: It’s next to the dining room. M: OK. Thanks. (Text 8) W: And just to finish our news — Chris Peterson is going to tell us about the new Crossways sports and fitness center. M: Thanks. It’s almost finished and the sports center will be open to the public on June 16th — that’s for sports and swimming. The fitness center isn’t quite finished, and won’t be open until 21st August, instead of 10th July as planned. W: And will you give us some information now about what we can do in the sports center? M: Sure. The center provides volleyball, basketball and table tennis indoors. And there are also outdoor sports like football and tennis. There’s also a new swimming pool. W: OK, thank you for your report, Chris. (Text 9) M: Hey, Judy, what are you reading? W: Well, a passage about wildlife protection organizations. M: Really? I’ve read something about the World Wildlife Fund, you know, whose official sign is a picture of a panda. W: Yeah. It has been working to protect the world’s endangered species since it was founded in 1961. You know there are organizations who focus on certain animals. M: Really? That’s interesting. W: Here it says the Audubon Society focuses on the protection of birds and the Oceanic Society has been working to protect sea wildlife, such as whales, dolphins and other kinds of fish since its foundation in 1969. M: Oh, I know the Audubon Society is named after an American wildlife painter. W: Yes, that’s right. There’s also this one, the Wilderness Society, who works to make sure that the forests, rivers and mountains of the United States remain untouched so that everyone can enjoy their clean air and water. The Wilderness Society tries to educate the public about that from its head office in Washington, D.C. to its eight branch offices across the United States. (Text 10) W: Hello, everyone. My name is Caroline Benson. I never expected to spend some of my first year at university filming The Finnegans. I’d only ever acted at school, but I’d loved the book since I was eleven. My grandmother used to say I was just like Polly Finnegan and I always imagined myself playing her. And I believe I could play the part well. I’d taken a year off to go traveling before university. While I was in Chile, my mother e-mailed me to say there were plans to turn the book into a film. I knew I had to go for the part. She was surprised at first, but sent my photo to the director and persuaded him to meet me. I flew back and got the part. The outdoor filming took a long time, so I got permission from the university to be away for three weeks. Once I was back at university, I got up at 6:00 a.m. to write the essays I’d missed. I didn’t tell my university friends, but they found out and thought it was great. It was a wonderful experience — I’m so lucky. 查看更多
