Maybe they were all tending to business, and they obviously didn't think school was any of their business.‎ The world is now flat. How's that fbr a sea change? As Thomas Friedman described it in his book The World Is Flat twenty-five years ago, the power structure of the world consisted of highs and lows. The countries with the power and knowledge were at the top of the mountains and the rest were down in the valleys. A handful of countries (the United States, Britain, Germany, and Japan) ruled the world's economy because they monopolize (垄断)the information and power.‎ Then came the Internet. Suddenly the countries down in the valleys were connected to the information network and the work flow. These included India, Eastern Europe, South Korea, Brazil, and China. Don't believe it? Walk into a supermarket and pick up any ten toys, checking each fbr where it was made, My last count: China, ten out of ten. The world's workforce became “flattened." No more disconnected valleys.‎ Since 2000, U.S. manufacturing has lost six million jobs, one-third of its workforce, most of them males. For the first time in history, women hold the majority of jobs in the U.S.‎ The only people who don't understand the sea change in business are the fathers and sons still clinging to the image of the male who doesn't need to play school—ust play ball. It's been thirty years since that idea had any wings, but too many males are still trying to make it fly. Once the only thing that mattered for men was what they could get out of the ground with their hands. Now it's what they can get out of their heads that counts. And without classroom success, today's male faces an impossible challenge from both intelligent women on the home front and foreigners willing to do the same job for ‎ less while sitting in an office in Bangalore or Singapore.‎ 56. Based on Friedman's description, why is the world becoming flat?‎ A. US which is the most powerful country controls the information.‎ B. Knowledge is shared globally with the development of the Internet.‎ C. Goods made in China and other countries are increasingly popular.‎ D. Where is this passage most likely from?‎ A. A news story. B. A book review.‎ C. An educational book. D. An economic report.‎ C There are two kinds of secrets: secrets of nature and secrets about people. Natural secrets exist all around us; to find them, one must study some undiscovered aspect of the physical world. Secrets about people are different: they are things that people don't know about themselves or things they hide because they don't want others to know. So when thinking about what kind of company to build, there are two distinct questions to ask: What secrets is nature not telling you? What secrets are people not telling you?‎ It's easy to assume that natural secrets are the most important: the people who look for them can sound authoritative (权威的).This is why physics PhDs are difficult to work with—because they know the most basic truths, they think they know all truths. But does understanding electronic theory automatically make you a great marriage counselor? Does a gravity theorist know more about your business than you do? At PayPal, I once interviewed a physics PhD for an engineering job. Halfway through my first question, he shouted, "Stop! I already know what you're going to ask!" But he was wrong. It was the easiest no-hire decision I've ever made. Secrets about people are relatively overlooked. Maybe that's because you don,t need a dozen years of higher education to ask the questions that uncover them: What are people not allowed to talk about? What is forbidden or taboo?‎ The best place to look for secrets is where no one else is looking. Most people think only in terms of what they've been taught; schooling itself aims to spread basic wisdom. So you might ask: are there any fields that matter but haven't been standardized? Physics, for example, is a real major at all major universities, and it's set in its ways. The opposite of physics might be astrology, but astrology doesn't matter. What about something like nutrition? Nutrition matters for everybody, but you can't major in it at Harvard. Most top scientists go into other fields. Most of the big studies were done 30 or 40 years ago, and most are seriously flawed (有缺陷的).The food pyramid that told us to eat low fat and large amounts of grains was probably produced by Big Food(美国著名食品公司)than real science; its chief impact has been to worsen our obesity(肥胖)problem. There9s plenty more to learn: we know more about the physics of far away stars than we know about human nutrition. It won't be easy, but it's not obviously impossible: exactly the kind of field that could produce secrets.‎ 59. What can we learn about secrets in Paragraph 1?‎ A. To establish a company, one should explore secrets of both nature and people,‎ B. Trying to discover people themselves will help them to find the natural secrets.‎ C. Secrets of nature are more important than secrets about people.‎ D. We have to find the secrets that nature and people have told us.‎ 60. The PhD's example suggests .‎ A. the physics PhD was not hired because he sounded authoritative B. higher education will ensure a better understanding of secrets C. it is necessary and important to appreciate secrets about people D. it is not easy for physics PhDs to find an engineering job 56. What can we infer from the last paragraph?‎ A. The best place to find secrets is where many great scientists are studying.‎ B. Eating low fat and large amounts of grains is certainly good for our health.‎ C. There may be some hidden secrets for us to find in the field of human nutrition.‎ D. Without physics, secrets in astrology and human nutrition would not have been found.‎ 57. What can be the best title for the passage?‎ A. Secrets of nature B. Secrets about people C. How to build a secret company D. How to find secrets D ① The year of 2017 marked the 100th birthday of the honoring Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei.‎ ② From museums to business headquarters, Pei had designed many notable buildings around the world throughout his long professional career. According to the organizers of ''Rethinking Pei: A Centenary Symposium (百年纪念座谈会)” held that year, Pei remained one of the most celebrated architects of the 20th and early 21st centuries.‎ ③ The Hong Kong Bank of China Tower is one of his most famous works in Asia. As the bank itself also celebrated its centenary in 2017, ifs worth examining the building's historical and architectural background to gain a deeper understanding of the architect who changed Hong Kong's skyline forever.‎ ④ The Bank of China Tower (BOC Tower) was completed in 1989, a year which the "New York Times" called ,•the year of I.M. Pei.” For it was in this same year that Pei also completed the glass pyramid of the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, the Creative Artist Agency Headquarters in Los Angeles, and other marvellous architectures all around the world.‎ ‎@Pei was commissioned (委托)in 1982 by the Beijing-based Bank of China to design itsheadquarters in Hong Kong, but construction did not start until 1985.‎ ‎©There were many reasons for the delay. One of the biggest was the huge challenges posed by the location. The land parcel had been the address of a Victorian building which served as a prison during Japanese occupation of Hong Kong between 1941 and 1945. This terrible heritage might be one of the reasons why it was dismantled in 1982.‎ ‎©For I.M. Pei, the challenge of the site was not its past, but its present: the relatively small land parcel was surrounded on three sides by elevated roadways serving high-speed heavy traffic, meaning there was no possible public pedestrian access. Then there was its awkward trapezoidal (梯形)shape and the fact that the site also had a deep north-south height difference.‎ ‎® Another challenge was the unavoidable comparison of the BOC Tower to the neighboring Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Headquarters(HSBC), which was also under construction. A spectacular building generously funded, its architect Norman Foster was simply told to create “the best bank building in the world.” At that time it was also the world's most expensive building, costing $668 million. The Bank of China Tower's budget was approximately one fifth of the budget allowed by HSBC.‎ ‎©The Hong Kong government had promised HSBC that no tall buildings would ever be built in front of its headquarters. Besides, in between the site of the Bank of China and the harbor, there were already a few buildings over 70 meters tall blocking views.‎ ‎©Recognizing that going tall was the only way to create a landmark at this site with his budget, Pei came up with an architectural tower design that was simple, expressive, innovative, and upon its completion, the tallest building outside of America and the fourth tallest in the world.‎ ‎©After the Bank of China officially moved into the tower in 1991, noted architect and critic Peter Blake visited the building and declared it to be "probably the most innovative skyscraper structure built anywhere to date."‎ ‎©Now 30 years after the building?s construction, the Bank of China Tower continues to offer valuable lessons of architectural and structural creativity under the most demanding conditions. Most importantly, the tower has become one of the most important cultural icons for the city of Hong Kong.‎ 56. Which of the following descriptions of I.M. Pei is NOT true?‎ A. I.M. Pei completed the glass pyramid of the Louvre Museum in Paris in 1989.‎ B. I.M. Pei changed Hong Kong's skyline because he constructed the BOC tower.‎ C. I.M. Pei was universally acknowledged as one of the most celebrated architect.‎ D. I.M. Pei began the construction of BOC Tower directly he got the commission.‎ 57. The Bank of China officially began to use it as its headquarter in Hong Kong in this year.‎ C. Both Ieoh Ming Pei and Hong Kong and Shangliai Bank celebrated their 100th birthday.‎ D. A Centenary Symposium celebrating the 100th birthday of 1. M. Pei was held that year.‎ 58. Why was it difficult fbr LM. Pei to design the BOC Tower?‎ A. The shape of the land parcel was a challenge to the architect.‎ B. The building of the Bank of China Tower was generously funded.‎ C. The heavy traffic surrounding the site stopped people from entering it.‎ D. The site had been a prison during Japanese occupation of Hong Kong.‎ 59. Pei achieve success B. the Bank of China Tower was a great masterpiece showing I.M. Pei's creativity C. compared with neighbouring HSBC, BOC Tower is much more extraordinary D. it was the design of the BOC Tower that made I.M. They wanted to see if age affected a person's ability to identify facial emotions, such as fear and anger.‎ The researchers from McLean Hospital in the US used a Web-based platform to collect happiness data. It showed the participants two headshots (头部特写)of random people. They were then asked to identify which subject was angrier, happier, or more fearful.‎ The research found that younger people were able to better identify angry and fearful facial cues than older people.‎ ‎"From studies and anecdotal evidence, we know that the everyday experiences of an adolescent are different from an older person, but we wanted to understand how these experiences might be linked with differences in basic emotion understanding, wrote Laura Germine, the study's senior author.‎ But what is it that makes young people more sensitive?‎ ‎"This is the exact age when young people are most sensitive to forms of negative social cues, such as bullying,” Lauren Rutter, the study's lead author, told Science Daily. "The normal development of anger sensitivity can contribute to some of the challenges that arise during this phase of development.,^‎ On the contrary, across the whole 10,000-person survey, researchers found no decline in the perception (感矢口)of happiness among older participants.‎ ‎“What's remarkable is that we see declines in many visual perceptual abilities as we get older, but here we did not see such declines in the perception of happiness,Germine told Neuro Science News.‎ She added that these findings fit well with other researches, showing that older adults tend to have more positive emotions and a positive outlook.‎ Following the paper's release, Rutter told Neuro Science News that gathering their primary research online allowed the team to research into a "much larger and more diverse sample set” than previous studies.‎ Title: Why the youth sense anger in faces Purpose of the research The idea is (71) ▲ whether age affects people's ability to identify facial emotions.‎ Process of the research The researchers (72) ▲ happiness data on a web-based platform.‎ Two (73) ▲ headshots were shown to the participants.‎ Participants were asked to identify the more (74) ▲ subject.‎ ‎(75)__A of the research Younger people are (76) ▲ at identifying negative social cues.‎ Adolescence is the exact age when anger sensitivity reaches its (77) A .‎ Perception of happiness isn't on the (78) ▲ with age.‎ Self-assessment of the research What the research proves (79) ▲ with other researches.‎ In comparison with previous studies, the sample set of the research is superior in its size and (80) A 第五部分 书面表达(满分25分)‎ ‎81.请阅读下面文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。‎ San Francisco, long one of the most tech-friendly and technologically first-class cities in the world, is now the first in the United States to prohibit its government from using ‎ facial recognition technology. However, this newly emerging technology has not been approved by everyone at every place.‎ Personally, I am in favor of using facial recognition technology. It can be widely applied in many aspects of social and economic life. For example, it brings convenience to our life. Customers can scan their faces to get their goods paid at the exit of some self-service supermarkets. It spares their trouble of bringing cash or credit cards. Moreover, it is safe to use facial recognition technology as family members con^rm their identity before unlocking the door to their home.‎ However, using this technology may give rise to the risk of the leaking of private information. As long as the technology is used legally and government supervision and monitoring are strengthened, it will bring more convenience to people's lives in the near future.‎ 录音原文:‎ Text 1‎ M: Are you going to dress up for the Halloween party tomorrow?‎ W: Yes, if I can finish making my costume today. I'll change when my other clothes come out of the washing machine.‎ Text 6‎ W: The food is ready! Come and eat before it gets cold!‎ M: Wow! This is an amazing meal! You must've spent a lot of time making these dishes. Let me see... Eggs with wild mushrooms, fresh bread, smoked duck, honey and cheese... When did you find the time to make all of these?‎ W: Most of them were already made three days ago, like the duck and the cheese. I picked the mushrooms two days ago. I prepared the bread yesterday and baked it this morning. I hope you like everything. Enjoy!‎ Text 7‎ M: We learned about catfish(鲶鱼)in science class today. They're very interesting!‎ W: Oh, really? What's interesting about them?‎ M: Well, they have hairs coming out of their face like cats! That's why they're called catfish. But they can be very big, about the size of a small dog.‎ W: Wow! What else did you learn?‎ M: They can be many colors, from blue to gray to white. They're mostly found in deep, freshwater rivers in the southern United States. They don't usually live in salt water. People love to eat them because they taste delicious. But they're hard to catch because they have sharp teeth that will bite you.‎ W: That is interesting!‎ Text 8‎ W: Have you given any thought to what you want for Christmas?‎ M: No. Mostly, I've been wondering what I'm going to get for my parents. Why?‎ W: I mean we've been married for a few years now. Isn't it easier to just get each other what we want?‎ M: I totally agree. When I'm a kid, it's cool to be a surprise. But now, I don't really care.‎ W: Me, neither. So, what do you want, anyway?‎ M: I need a watch.‎ W: But you just got a new Apple watch!‎ M: That is for when I exercise or wear casual clothes. I want something formal.‎ W: OK. I'll keep that in mind.‎ M: And you? What can I get for the most beautiful woman in the world?‎ W: Just take me to Europe.. .but make it a surprise!‎ Text 9‎ M: Hi, Miss Elsie! Is my suit ready yet?‎ W: Almost. I needed you to come today to try it on one more time. In fact, if only a few things need to be adjusted, you can probably take it home today.‎ M: That's great! The wedding is in two days, and I need to pick out a gift tomorrow.‎ W: Here, try this jacket on, and I will make some adjustments if it is not suitable. So, you never told me who's getting married!‎ M: It's my sister.‎ W: Wonderful! Congratulations to her!‎ M: Thank you. She's very happy. She and her husband will go to Italy the next day for a vacation. W: Oh, I love Italy! Where are they going?‎ M: They're flying to Rome. They'll spend a few days there, but most of their trip will actually be in Sicily. They'll spend a week in Palermo and another week in Catania.‎ W: I've been to Palermo. It's a lovely city. Well, I've ^xed the jacket. Does that feel comfortable, Mr. Roberson?‎ M: It's perfect.‎ W: You look smart! Now, we ironed the pants last time. I think you're all set to go!‎ M: Thank you!‎ Text 10‎ A new form of transportation has come to the Amazon jungle. It is a traditional boat from the area but with a modern addition: solar power. The boat is 16 meters long and can carry 20 people at a time. It has 32 solar boards that catch sunlight and store it as energy. The boat was designed to help connect remote Achuar communities that live along the Amazon River. It is an alternative to building roads through the forest, but the native people do not want to cut down the trees. It's also a cheaper choice to take a small airplane, which normally costs $15 between the villages. But regular flights are often cancelled because there are too few people who want to fly, or because of bad weather. Taking a private airplane can cost $200 a person, which is too expensive for most villagers. Besides being a much cheaper form of transportation, at $1 per ride, the solar boat is obviously better for the environment. It does not use the polluting fuel of airplanes. Also, there is no need to cut down more of the Amazon rainforest, which has some of the most diverse plant and animal species in the world.‎
