And while many took dollars, many others pinned their own cash to the board. “People of all ages, races, and socio-economic(社会经济的)backgrounds gave and took, ”said Tyler Bridges of The Toolbox, which created the project. “We even had a bride in her wedding dress come up to the board and take a few dollars.” Most of the bills on the board were singles, but a few people left fives, tens and even twenties. The video clip(片段)shows one man who had found a $ 20 bill pinning it to the board. “What I can say for the folks that gave the most, is that they were full of smiles,” Bridges said. “There’s a certain feeling that giving can do for you and that was apparent in those that gave the most." Most people who took dollars took only a few, but Bridges said a very small number took as much as they could. While the clip might look like part of a new ad campaign, Bridges said the only goal was to show generosity and sympathy. He added that he hopes people in other cities might try similar projects and post their own videos on the Internet. “After all, everyone has bad days and good days," he said. “Some days you need a helping hand and some days you can be the one giving the helping hand.” 25. To earn himself a good reputation. D. To promote kindness and sympathy. C Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur(创业者), who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids' teeth, instead of destroying them. It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, "Why can't I make a healthy candy that's good for my teeth so that my parents can't say no to it?" With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain. With her dad's permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria. Moore then used her savings to get her business of the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore's product-Cancandy. As CanCandy's success grows, so does Moore's credibility as a young entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she's also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile. Meanwhile, with her parents' help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn't driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilicCandy's profits to Big Smiles. With her talent and determination, it appears that the sky could be the limit for Alice Moore. 28. How did Moore react to her dad's warning? A. She argued with him. B. She tried to find a way out. C. She paid no attention. D. She chose to consult dentists. 29. What is special about CanCandy? A. It is beneficial to dental health. B. It is free of sweeteners. C. It is sweeter than other candies. D. It is produced to a dentists' recipe. 30. What does Moore expect from her business? A. To earn more money. B. To help others find smiles. C. To make herself stand out. D. To beat other candy companies. 31. What can we learn from Alice Moore's story? A. Fame is a great thirst of the young. B.A youth is to be regarded with respect. C. Positive thinking and action result in success. D. Success means getting personal desires satisfied D Whenever I talk about personality in relation to choosing a career, some people complain like this: Those tests are so stupid. When I was in sixth grade, I took one of them and it said that I should be a farmer. While I don’t think I would be a very good farmer, the results are probably a lot more accurate (精确的) than I’d like to admit. At the time, it seemed unreasonable — I hated the outdoors and physical activities. Now, I think it might have had some points that fit my personality: I like planning (good for planning how to grow crops), working by myself (for those long days on an agricultural machine), and sometimes working on a team (for harvest time). Watch out for any personality test that claims (声称) to be able to tell you what your dream job is by the type of animal you’d like to be, or from your favorite breakfast food as a child. While there are many personality assessments (评估) that are accurate, I’d like to say that they are a second step. The best choice is self-assessments. Before finding ways to know your work preferences, it’s important to make a clear difference between liking a topic and liking the work. I once met a third-year marine (海洋的) biology student at a large state school in Ohio. He was placed into the Whale Watch program, where he found out that he became violently seasick on any kind of boat — a big disadvantage for a student who thought he wanted to study whales in the wild. The best match is a career in which the major tasks of the work are the tasks you most enjoy doing and the topic is one of interest. If that career doesn’t exist, my advice would be to take the job where there is a skill match. In this way, you will succeed at the basic tasks of your job and perhaps become interested in it. 32. What is some people’s opinion on choosing a career through personality tests? A. It’s possible to lead to career failure. B. It’s helpful only in a limited way. C. It’s unreasonable. D. It’s worth a try. 33. What does the author think of the personality test she took when she was young? A. She admits it forecasts her present job accurately. B. She thinks it shows some part of her personality. C. She finds it helpless for her. D. She has little interest in it. 34. What is the best way to know your dream job? A. Taking personality tests on your favorite things. B. Doing accurate personality assessments. C. Trying your dream job in practice. D. Finding it out by yourself. 35. Why was the marine biology student unsuitable for his job? A. He disliked the job. B. He felt sick traveling on a boat. C. He was afraid of marine animals. D. He knew little about his preferences. 第二节: 七选五 What does it really mean to be successful? 36 . It is about being able to live a happy life. When your intention is to serve your purpose, make a change in the world and express your talents, you will feel true success and satisfaction. 3. 39 Success is all around you right now. I got this at the school library instead of the bookstore. M: Let me take a look at yours. Oh, I see. This is last year’s edition. It’s fine. The teacher said the content is exactly the same. Text 2 M: Madam, I just need to see the original receipt in order to give you a refund. If you can’t find it, then I can give you store credit(代金券). W: I thought I had it in my bag. Oh, it’s here in my pocket! Thank goodness! Text 3 W: Thank you, Officer Williams, for showing us that video on drivers’ safety. You explained things more clearly than what I said in the introduction. M: Thank you, Mrs.Holloway. Now, our fire chief Mr.Atkins would like to say a few words before we get to the demonstration. Text 4 W: What is this music? Is it something from the Middle East? M: Actually, it’s Chinese music. My friend from China gave me this CD. Even though there aren’t any words, I still love it. W: Absolutely. Sometimes the best music doesn’t have any singing. I wish American radio stations played more music like this. Text 5 W: Did you finish the report? M: Yes, finally! I’ll be able to give it to Dr.Smith and go home early for a change. I’m looking forward to cooking a big supper. W: Well, I think you’d better take another look at your spelling. Text 6 W: Hi, Barry. How is everything going? Have you finished cleaning the office here? M: No, it’s taking longer than expected. I’m cleaning the carpet. It is too dirty. W: Well, could you do me a favor? I need some help moving a big table in the meeting room. M: Sure. This is a good time for me to take a break from the carpet, anyway. W: That’s very nice of you. Text 7 W: Hi, I’d like one ticket for the jazz concert at 7 o’clock. M: I’m sorry, but there are no more tickets for tonight’s concert. But we do have some seats for the same performance this weekend. Are you interested in that show? W: Oh, that’s a pity. I won’t be here then. I’m just here in Paris for a friend’s birthday celebration. And I’ll fly back to New York tomorrow. Do you have any other suggestions for things to do? M: Well, why don’t you go to the museum instead? It’s nearby and they have a wonderful art collection of Chinese paintings. I just saw it myself last weekend. W: That sounds like a good idea. Text 8 M: Do you have the latest information on the hotel? W: Yes, I think so. M: Right. Tell me something about it. W: OK. The hotel is in Sitges, a small town which is 37 kilometers away from Barcelona. And there is a bus stop right outside the hotel. M: That’s good. The hotel we booked last year was near a busy road, and it was 2 kilometers from the beach. I hope this hotel isn’t like that. W: No, it’s only about 100 meters away from the beach. M: OK. What about the entertainment? W: There’s tennis, table tennis, volleyball and mini golf. Oh, they also organize football matches. It used to have KTV and keep-fit classes, but now they’re closed. M: Oh, what a pity. What about the overall price? W: Well, it’s the high season(旺季) so the price is really high for the moment, $800. M: Wouldn’t it be better to cut it down to $699? We can try to bargain with the hotel manager. W: OK. Let’s do it. Text 9 W: Ted, I heard that it took you seven years to finish college. Why did it take you so long? M: That was because I changed my majors several times. When I went to Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland ten years ago, I wanted to become a dog trainer. But my university did not offer any such degree programs. So I chose engineering. W: Did you love engineering? M: Not really. My parents suggested I choose it. I was just twenty years old then and I still followed my parents’ advice. So I chose it. But a few months later, I realized it really wasn’t what I wanted. So I changed my major to biology. W: Why didn’t you finish this major? M: I decided I did not want to spend my life working in a laboratory. In my second year, I changed my major to another field of interest:fine art. W: Did you finish it? M: No. After two years of studying fine art, I felt that I preferred art as something I did for pleasure, not for work. W: So what did you choose in the end? M: Computer game design. Text 10 M: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I’m Mike Smith. I feel honored to be invited to the conference. I don’t know whether you’ve heard about the Slow Food Movement before. Now, I’ll talk about it. The Slow Food Movement is really a reaction to fast food and our fast modern lifestyles. People eat too many hamburgers, too many pizzas, and too much fast food in general. The movement itself was started by an Italian called Carlo Petrini. He organized it because a McDonald’s had opened near the Spanish Steps in Rome. He felt it was sort of symbolic of the destruction of many valuable traditional things and he tried to promote healthier ways of eating and living. Some people may think Slow Food just means healthier food. Not exactly. I think it’s more about our lifestyles than anything else. We’re always in such a hurry. We don’t have enough time to take care of ourselves, or enjoy our lives. Fast food companies advertise that their food is healthy as well. It may be right in a way, but for me, and for a lot of Slow Fooders, the problem is that wherever you sit down for a meal, whether it’s in Tokyo or Milan, what you’re given is too similar. It makes eating and life in general, boring. Traditional food isn’t going to be lost completely, but we do want as many people as possible to enjoy it. 查看更多
