In an experiment led by Keith Chen at Yale, monkeys showed an understanding of pricing and planning the money, as well as a wish to stay away from losses when required to buy food with money. Makes sense this one looks like it’s checking its stocks (股票) on a smart phone. Think that’s impressive? ◆Camel eats breakfast with people The first time Joe ate with British farmers, he was uninvited. The four-year-old Bactrian camel stuck his head through their open kitchen window, and emptied a fruit bowl. Now the couple, who rent out reindeer, camels, goats, and other creatures for television shows, movies, and photo shoots, set a place at their table for the confident double-humped creature, where Joe eats grain food and his favorite: bananas on toast. ◆Marmots (土拨鼠) befriend a boy A group of marmots in the Austrian Alps has made friends with eight-year-old Matteo Walch by chance, whose family vacations there in summer. Typically, they beat their tails, chatter, and whistle to warn other marmots of danger, but with Matteo, they behave much differently, allowing the boy to feed, pet, and even touch noses with them. “Watching them makes me feel a connection with nature,” says Matteo. How sweet! 21.In what way do monkeys behave like humans according to the text? A. In character. B. In intelligence. C. In communication. D. In the way of lifestyle. 22.Why do the British couple raise the animals? A. To make money. B. To have dinners with them. C. To protect endangered animals. D. To train them to act as humans. 23.Why did Matteo Walch go to the Austrian Alps? A. To warn marmots of danger. B. To develop interest in nature. C. To make friends with marmots. D. To go on a holiday with his family. B In Africa, Christmas Day begins with groups of carolers (欢唱颂歌的人) walking to and from through the village, along the roadway, by the houses of the missionaries (传教士), singing the lovely carols known to the world around. Often people may be awakened by a group of carolers beginning to gather at the house of worship(敬神活动). They return home to make final preparations as to the clothes one must wear and also as to their offering for the Christmas service. The most important part of their Christmas worship service is the love offering. This is the gift in honor of Jesus. At about 8 or 9 o’clock everyone goes to the celebration of the birthday of Jesus. Everyone who attends the service goes forward to lay down their gift upon the raised platform near the Communion table. No one will attend the service without giving a gift. Christmas in South Africa is a summer holiday. There is no snow, but it has many flowers, many beautiful varieties of wild flowers being in their full pride. In Ghana, most churches show the coming of Christmas by decorating the church and homes beginning with the first week in Advent, four weeks before Christmas. This season happens to be the time of cocoa harvest, so it is a time of wealth. Everyone returns home from wherever they might be such as farms or mines. In Africa, it is the traditional dinner of turkey, roast beef, mince pies, or suckling pig, yellow rice with raisins, vegetables, and plum pudding, crackers. In the afternoon, families go out into the country and usually there are games or bathing in the warm sunshine, and then home in the cool of the evening. Boxing Day is also a proclaimed (正式宣布的) public holiday usually spent in the open air. It falls on December 26 and is a day of real relaxation. 24. The purpose of this text is to ________. A. persuade us to have a holiday in Africa B. describe some important holidays in Africa C. tell us how people celebrate Christmas in Africa D. introduce to us when Christmas came into being 25. What is the most important part of Christmas worship service? A. One must sing a carol on the platform. B. One must appear in fantastic clothes. C. Food is shared among carolers. D. Everyone carries a gift to the scene. 26. If you visit South Africa on Christmas Day, you’ll find _____________. A. the church and homes are being decorated B. there are flowers all over the country C. everyone returns home to harvest cocoa D. it is snowing heavily everywhere 27. The correct time order of the following festivals should be __________. A. Christmas→ Boxing Day→Advent B. Boxing Day→ Christmas→Advent C. Christmas→ Advent→Boxing Day D. Advent→Christmas→Boxing Day C When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer. Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note-“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”-and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear. All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery. There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service. Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊). Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk. 28. Mr Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer____. A. to show his magical power. B. to pay for the delivery C. to satisfy his curiosity. D. to please his mother. 29. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house? A. He wanted to have tea there. B. He was a respectable person. C. He was treated as a family member. D. He was fully trusted by the family. 30. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist? A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now. B. It has been driven out of the market. C. Its service is getting poor. D. It is forbidden by law. 31. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box? A. He missed the good old days. B. He wanted to tell interesting stories. C. He missed it for his milk bottles. D. He planted flowers in it. D “You’ll get square eyes!” my mother used to say as I sat for hour after hour glued to the TV. I ignored her, of course. Past-forward a few decades and now I’m the parent. My 5-year-old lives in a world where screens aren’t fixed pieces of furniture. You can’t even avoid them by going outside. Screens are not only in our pockets; they’re everywhere. The concerns have grown with the screens. In the past decade, we have heard that they will damage our mental health. Many of us feel more distracted by them, feeling guiltier and more tired as a result. The apps and websites we can access on our phones have also sparked widespread concern. Big tech companies are also good at making use of our need for social recognition hooking us on likes, retweets and follower counts. Social media has created a culture of mass narcissism (自恋), which has led many to worry about the emotional stresses on teenagers. A quick online search brings up dozens of papers linking screen use or social media with harmful effects on mental health, including depression and suicide. Such statements are alarming. They are also widely believed, thanks to popular books like iGen by Jean Twenge, which claims that digital technology has ruined a generation. Yet, Amy Orben at the University of Oxford, who studies the impact of digital technology and social media in particular on mental health, holds different views. She claims that the underlying data can be used to tell different stories. She also spotted shortcomings in several large studies that claimed to show correlations (相关性) between the use of devices with screens and depression in users. Twenge stands by her own finding, pointing in turn to what she considers flaws in Orben’s research methods. For David Max, at Royal College of Child Health in London, the effect of screen time and social media use on mental health remains speculative. “We cannot regard social media overall as good or bad,” says Davie. “We don’t know whether in individual cases social media is not responsible,” he says. The explosion of mobile phone use has revolutionized our lives. I can download movies, write articles, communicate with my family and broadcast to the world all at the push of a button. Rather than impose constraints (限制), we should take a look at our use of screens and ask how they fit with the activities and lifestyle. Every new technology with widespread impact has given rise to new fears. So the best bet may simply be to ask yourself what level of screen use makes you and those around you happy and try to stick to it. If you find yourself over addictive, don’t panic—and certainly don’t feel guilty. Nobody knows anything worth getting scared about. 32. According to the passage, people give likes, retweet or count followers to __________. A. share one’s lifestyles B. show respect for others C. seek social recognition D. relieve emotional stresses 33. The underlined word “speculative” probably means “__________”. A. doubtful B. specific C. important D. abstract 34. What can be learned from the passage? A. Teenagers are more affected by screen use both physically and mentally. B. Orben claims it is far too early to blame screen use for ruining a generation. C. Big tech companies help to produce many research papers on mental health. D. Twenge mainly introduces the overall benefits of digital technology in her books. 35. The passage is written to __________. A. encourage readers to reduce the time of screen use B. share different opinions on the effects of screen use C. explain why screen use may have negative effects on people D. relieve people’s concerns and worries about the use of screens 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to keep yourself safe from new virus? In your letter you asked me how to keep healthy. I would like to give you some advice. As you know, we teenagers grow very fast, so we need plenty of nutritious foods, such as fish, meat, and beans, especially fresh vegetables and fruits. You'd better not eat too much food rich in sugar or fat. Besides, you should take physical exercise regularly instead of studying in the classroom all the time. For example, you can play basketball with your friends or swim after school. What's more, having enough sleep is very important. So I advise that you should have at least eight hours of sleep every day and not stay up too late in the evening. Only in this way can you keep fit. Yours, David查看更多
