‎ A I waited in line for hours in Central Park for tickets to Shakespeare, so I could share my experience with you. I hope my experience will be helpful to you!‎ ‎1. Plan for the weather.‎ You’ll be sitting outside for several hours waiting for tickets. If it’s going to be a sunny day, bring sun cream and water. If you think it might rain, bring your umbrella or raincoat. If the day promises to be unseasonably cool, you’ll be happy you’ve brought a sweater or jacket along.‎ ‎2. Keep yourself entertained.‎ Bring an iPad, a good book, some magazines or even some work along with you to pass the time. You’ll be in line for about 3-4 hours, and you’ll be glad to have a crossword puzzle or other games to kill the time once the people-watching starts to get boring.‎ ‎3. Know the basics.‎ Free tickets are being given out for the same day’s performance and they are not changeable. That means if it rains, you’re out of luck. That also means that you have to wait for tickets in the morning and attend the evening’s performance the same night (Doors open around 8 p.m. for the 8:30 p.m. show.).‎ ‎4. Feeling fortunate? Enter the online ticket lottery(抽签获票).‎ If you don’t want to spend several hours waiting in line for tickets, you can try your luck on the Internet. Once you set up your account, you can enter the online ticket lottery between midnight and noon. You’ll get an email message around noon if you’ve gotten tickets, and you can pick up your tickets at the Delacorte Theater between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm.‎ ‎( )1. Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap(包装).‎ On September 11th, 1958, Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying. “I promised you a gift, and here it is.” What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. I told it over and over how much I loved it!‎ One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as “hopeless”, “pitiful”, and “dying”, which sounded ominous.‎ Christmas was coming.“Don’t expect any presents this year.”Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room.“If your baby brother lives, that'll be Christmas enough.” As he spoke, his eyes were filled with tears. I'd never seen him cry before.‎ The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say. “What? He's all right?” He hung up and shouted upstairs. “The hospital said we can bring Richard home!”‎ ‎“Thank God.” I heard Mum cry.‎ From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born.‎ The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed), and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot(煤灰),as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in its first year.‎ ‎( )8.What led the British government to build the London Underground?‎ A. Traffic jams and pollution. B. Population and pollution.‎ C. Overcrowding and traffic jams. D. The poverty and subway problems. ‎ ‎( )9.How did the London Underground solve the smoke problem?‎ A. It made the tunnels larger.‎ B. It put fans in the tunnels.‎ C. The underlined phrase “catch on” most probably means “______”.‎ A. be troublesome B. become popular and fashionable C. keep up with D. seize ‎( )11. Which of the following is TRUE?‎ A. To relocate the workers’ homes outside London, the government built the subway.‎ B. There were so many problems and delays that in 18th century the first subway opened.‎ C. The subway greatly eased the pressure of traffic.‎ D. There were not enough seats for the passengers the first day the subway opened.‎ D Why elephants rarely get cancer is a mystery that has confused scientists for decades. A study was led by researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah and Arizona State University, including researchers from the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation may have found the answer. According to the results, elephants have 38 additional modified copies of a gene (基因) that encodes p53, a well-defined tumor (肿瘤) suppressor, as compared to humans, who have only two. Further, elephants may have a more powerful mechanism for killing damaged cells that are at risk for becoming cancerous. In isolated elephant cells, this activity is doubled compared to healthy human cells, and five times that of cells from patients with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, who have only one working copy of p53 and more than a 90 percent lifetime cancer risk in children and adults. The results suggest extra p53 could explain elephants’ increased resistance to cancer. ‎ ‎“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer. It’s up to us to learn how different animals overcome the problem so we can adapt those strategies to prevent cancer in people,” says co-senior author Joshua Schiffman, M.D., pediatric oncologist (肿瘤学家) at Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah School of Medicine, and Primary Children’s Hospital. ‎ According to Schiffman, elephants have long been considered a walking problem. Because they have 100 times as many cells as people, they should be 100 times more likely to have a cell slip into a cancerous state and cause the disease over their long life span of 50 to 70 years. And yet it’s believed that elephants get cancer less often, a theory confirmed in this study. Analysis of a large database of elephant deaths estimates a cancer death rate of less than 5 percent compared to 11 to 25 percent in people. ‎ ‎( )12. Why do humans often get cancer compared to elephants according to the passage? ‎ A. Elephants are bigger than humans. B. Elephants have more p53 than humans. ‎ C. Elephants are not as clever as humans. D. Elephants eat more than humans. ‎ ‎( )13. Which of the following is right according to the passage? ‎ A. Some damaged cells may be dangerous.‎ B. Some damaged cells are not dangerous. ‎ C. Some damaged cells can’t be cancerous.‎ D. Some damaged cells in elephants’ bodies are more dangerous than those in humans’ bodies. ‎ ‎( )14. What can we know from the last paragraph? ‎ A. Elephants have more cells than people. B. Elephants can get cancer easily. ‎ C. Elephants seldom die from cancer. D. Elephants often die from cancer. ‎ ‎( )15. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? ‎ A. Elephants help us B. Learn from Nature C. How to deal with cancer D.
