This interested Alfred Wegener, a young geographer working in Greenland in 1910. He thought the error too great to be explained. Wegener himself took measurements and found that since 1869 the island had moved another five-eighths of a mile. After checking the position of other Arctic landmasses, he concluded that all of them were drifting (漂移) westward at different speeds. From this finding, Wegener developed his floating continent theory. He imagined an original super-continent making up the infant(未成年的) earth, finally the mass broke up into several pieces — the present continents. The continents do seem to fit together like pieces of a puzzle, and what’s more , some of the mountain ranges (山脉) of different continents lime up rather well, as if the landmasses were at one time connected. However, believable as Wegener’s argument appeared, many geographers refused to accept it. Exactly how the continents were formed is still a leading mystery (谜) in geography, though today many geographers are returning to the continental drift theory. 24. Sabine Island was first discovered and mapped by _____. A. Alfred Wegener B. a British geographer C. geographers of Greenland D. the map makers of 1869 25. The 1869 map showed that _____. A. Sabine Island was one part of Greenland C. the Arctic landmasses were slowly drifting westward D. all the continents were drifting slowly away from one another 27. From the passage we can conclude that ______. A. Wegener had a true scientific attitude B. Wegener liked to make things for granted C. how the continents were formed is found out D. the continental drift theory needs further testing C Snowbirds are people who leave their homes when the temperature drops and head to warmer climates. They are mostly retirees and business owners who can afford to take the winter off. While the snow flies in the Northern states, they are enjoying golf, sailing and barbecues in mild temperatures in the South. Then, after winter passes, they return to their homes in the North. Most snowbirds are away from Canada and the Northern states between the middle of October and the end of November. They pack up and head to Florida, Alabama, Texas, California, and all of the other Southern states. Some may even go as far as Australia or Italy to escape the cold winter weather. There are special communities for snowbirds in many areas. Snowbirds are also offered special discounts in some restaurants, hotels and area attractions. Several states even have special snowbird resorts(度假胜地) . There are several online communities and local resources to help snowbirds get set in their seasonal homes. Some snowbirds own homes both in the South and in the North. Both homes have everything they will need for their stay, minimizing the amount of packing necessary when moving from one to the other. Other snowbirds will rent apartments for the duration of their stay outside of their home state. Recreational(娱乐的、休闲的) vehicles, or RVs, are a huge part of the snowbird lifestyle. RVs allow snowbirds to move from place to place on a whim(奇想), bringing everything they need with them. They spend nights in RV parks, large parking lots or anywhere else they choose to stay. RVs have beds, bathrooms, and most other modern conveniences available in a regular home. Although the spaces are small, there is more than enough room for a couple to live in. 28. Which of the following can be regarded as a snowbird? A. One who retires and has a lot of free time. B. One who likes to play in snow in winter. C. One who travels around the world the whole year. D. A. avoid the heavy traffic B. carry everything they have at home C. have a comfortable life wherever they are D. save more money than renting an apartment 31. We can conclude from the passage that ____. A. one has to be quite wealthy to be a snowbird B. Canada is a favorite destination for snowbirds C. snowbirds don’t like the weather in the North D. a snowbird has to own homes both in the South and in the North D The next time your face turns red after tripping(绊倒) over your own feet in public, don’t try to hide it — a new study finds that showing your embarrassment actually makes other people view you as more reliable. Researchers at the University of California have carried out the study and found that embarrassment is a good thing — in fact, embarrassment is one emotional signature of a person to whom you can entrust valuable resources. Not only are the findings useful for people seeking cooperative and reliable team members and business partners, but they also make for helpful dating advice. “Moderate levels of embarrassment are signs of virtue. Our data suggests embarrassment is a good thing, not something you should fight, ” said Matthew Feinberg, who led the study. While the most typical gesture of embarrassment is a downward gaze to one side while partially covering the face, a person who feels shame, as distinguished from embarrassment, will typically cover the whole face, Feinbery said. The results were got from a series of experiments. In the first experiment, 60 college students were videotaped describing embarrassing moments, such as making incorrect assumptions(假想) based on appearances. The college students also participated in the “Dictator Game” which is used in economics research to measure altruism(利他主义). For example, each was given 10 raffle tickets(奖券) and asked to keep a share of the tickets and give the remainder to a partner. The findings, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, showed that those who showed greater levels of embarrassment tended to give away more of their raffle tickets, indicating greater generosity. 32. According to the passage, a person _____is thought to be reliable. A. who feels shame B. who shows his embarrassment C. who hides his embarrassment D. who gives away more raffle tickets 33. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that _____. A. it’s useless to fight our embarrassment B. embarrassed people are not good at doing business C. people who show embarrassment can be good business partners D. people should try to overcome their embarrassment 34. The “Dictator Game” is used to ______. A. test whether a student is generous or not B. measure the students’ economic status C. determine the different levels of embarrassment D. record how each student reacts during embarrassing moments 35. We learn from Paragraph 6 that those who showed greater levels of embarrassment _____. A. were less reliable B. kept more of the raffle tickets C. didn’t care for raffle tickets D. proved to be more generous 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Although problems are a part of our lives, it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever. On the way, we bought books and toys with the money donated by our classmates and our teachers. Upon our arrival, we handed out all the gifts to the children, then we patiently taught them to sing songs and played games with them. Before leaving, we received pictures drawn by them as souvenirs of the visit. When we were about to leave, the children waved their hands and thanked us for our kindness. Seeing the children’s bright smiles, all of us considered the visit to be well worthwhile. We have made an effort to bring sunshine to the children’s lives, and were really happy to be able to help them.查看更多
