B Just what is a tiger mother?Amy Chua is a law professor at America's Yale University and her recent book on the subject is making waves. She's been called “dangerous”,“outrageous”,even a “monster” for her descriptions of how she brought up her two daughters. Her book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother describes fighting with a daughter for hours at the piano to ensure the child gets a piece of music right. She rejected birthday cards made for her by her girls because she didn't think they had made enough effort. She compared one child negatively with the other, threatening to burn their toys. Her rules include:schoolwork always comes first; an A minus is a bad grade; children must be two years ahead of their classmates in math, and playing the violin or the piano is a must. Ms. Chua considers the Chinese hard work ethic(道德) as a way of creating happy, successful children—at least in her case. Although she's had a large amount of flak for her theories, one thing can't be ignored—the success of Chinese children in the education system. In Britain, shocking research shows that Chinese girls, for example, are outperforming all other foreign groups at GCSE—79 percent getting 5 A C Grades, compared with 58 percent of white British girls. So what is it about Chinese parenting that's leading to high achievers? And how do Amy Chua's theories play into that success? She told me that if her daughter came back from school with 96/100 in a test,Chua would ask her what happened to the other 4 points. It's about always knowing “you can do better”,she told me. Interestingly,in China, the birthplace of the tiger mother, people are moving away from traditional Chinese parenting. They are following more western parenting styles. 24. After reading Amy Chua's recent book, the public ______. A. feel very sorry for their own children B. consider her a very successful mother C. realize their methods of bringing up children are wrong D. don't think highly of her methods of bringing up her children 25. The underlined word in the third paragraph probably means_____. A. Attention B. Criticism C. Curiosity D. Contribution 26. It can be inferred from the text that ______. A. Amy Chua will change her methods B. Amy Chua considers her methods useful C. Amy Chua's children don't love their mother D. Amy Chua's children prefer western parenting styles C It's already challenging enough for environmentalists to keep beaches clear of washed up trash(垃圾) and plastic debris(残骸), but the most difficult problem lies in cleaning up all of the millions of tiny microplastics that are impossible to pick up and separate from the sand. Fortunately, a group of engineering students succeeded in developing a massive new vacuum cleaner that can collect microplastics without removing any of the sand from the beach. The 12 Canadian students from the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec built their Hoola One plastic vacuum cleaner as a class project. "We did some research and we realized there was no machine around the world to do this kind of job," Hoola One co-founder Sam Duval told Hawaii Public Radio. "So we told each other, 'We will invent it,' and we did it." As a means of testing their machine's efficiency, they recently used it on the sands of Hawaii's Kamilo Beach, which is also notorious for being one of the dirtiest beaches in the world. Though their first prototype(原型)experienced a number of technical issues, the students managed to fix the problems and tidy up the beach. Using a handheld tube, the machine sucks(吸入)up plastic and sand and dumps them all into a massive tank of water. Since rocks and sand are heavier than plastic, they sink to the bottom of the tank so they can be dumped back onto the beach. The plastic, on the other hand, floats to the top of the tank. According to Hawaii Public Radio, the team left the Hoola One vacuum on the island as a donation to the state department- They are now researching the ecological effects of the vacuum on the beach while they search for funding and sponsorships(赞助)to produce more Hoola One vacuums. 27. What is the hardest problem of keeping the beach clean? A. Picking up plastic debris. B. Removing trash on the sea. C. Separating plastics from the sand. D. Clearing up all the microplastics. 28. What do we know about the Hoola One plastic vacuum cleaner? A. It can collect plastics without removing sand from the beach. B. It has been used widely on the beaches around the world. C. The students tested its efficiency on Hawaii's Kamilo Beach. D. The students gave up the first prototype due to several failures. 29. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about? A. The working procedure of the vacuum cleaner. B. The invention process of the vacuum cleaner. C. The ecological impacts of the vacuum cleaner. D. The special materials of the vacuum cleaner. 30. What words can best describe the 12 Canadian students? A. Generous and stubborn. B. Confident and persistent. C. Devoted and wealthy. D. Admirable and humorous. 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(答题卡上若选E填涂AB; F填涂AC; G填涂AD) When everything goes wrong, always look at what you have, instead of what you have lost. Because it’s not what the world takes away from you that counts; it’s what you do with what you have left. 31 Pain is part of growing. Sometimes life closes doors because it’s time to move forward. 32 When times are tough, remind yourself that no pain comes without a purpose. Remember that there are two kinds of pain: pain that hurts and pain that changes you. When you roll with life, instead of resisting it, both kinds help you grow. 33 Every time you get hurt, you heal. After darkness there is always light – you are reminded of this every morning, but still you often forget, and instead choose to believe that the night will last forever. It won’t. Nothing lasts forever. Complaining changes nothing. 34 It’s always better to attempt to do something great and fail than to attempt to do nothing and succeed. It’s not over if you’ve lost; it’s over when you do nothing but complain about it. If you believe in something, keep trying. Don’t let the shadows of the past darken the doorstep of your future. The best thing you can do is to keep going. Don’t be afraid to get back up----to try again, to love again, to live again, and to dream again. Don’t let a hard lesson harden your heart. Life’s best lessons are often learned at the worst times and from the worst mistakes. There will be times when it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong is going wrong. 35 A. Everything in life is temporary. B. And even if you fall short, keep going. C. Your scars are symbols of your strength. D. Those who complain the most, accomplish the least. E.Here are a few tips to inspire you when you need it most. F.That’s a good thing because we often won’t move unless life forces us to . G.When you feel like quitting, remember that sometimes things can be right eventually. It was many years ago. Instead of choosing one of his own children, he decided to do something different. He called all the young people together one day. He said, "It's time for me to step down and to choose the next emperor. I’ve decided to choose one of you. "The kids were shocked! But the emperor continued, “I’m going to give each of you a special seed(种子). I want you to go home, plant the seed, water and come back here one year from today with what you’ve grown from this one seed. I will then judge the plants you bring, and the one I choose will be the next emperor!” One boy named Ling was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. Back home, he planted the seed in a pot and watered it carefully. Every day he would watch to see if it had grown。 After three weeks, some of the other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Ling kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, four weeks went by. Still nothing. He felt like a failure. Six months went by, everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Ling didn’t say anything to his friends. However, he just kept waiting for his seed to grow. A year finally went by and all the youths brought their plants to the emperor for inspection. Ling didn't want to go, but his mother encouraged him to go and to be honest about what happened. Ling knew his mother was right. He took his empty pot to the palace. When Ling arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by all the other youths. He put his empty pot on the floor and many of the other kids laughed at him. A few felt sorry for him and just said, “Hey, nice try.” 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2. 至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1: When the emperor arrived, he surveyed and greeted the young people. I strongly recommend some effective measures be taken. First, we should encourage students to ride a bicycle or walk to school by themselves. It is also a good idea to allow junior student to leave school 10 minutes earlier than others. Besides, cars should not be allowed to park near the school gate. I do hope my suggestions can be considered and the problem can disappear soon. Yours, Li Hua 第二节 概要写作(满分25分) 范文: When the emperor arrived, he surveyed and greeted the young people.Ling just tried to hide in the back. “My god, what great plants, trees and flowers you have grown!” said the emperor.Suddenly, the emperor spotted Ling at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered his guards to bring him to the front. Ling was terrified. "The emperor knows I’m a failure! Maybe he will have me killed!” When Ling got to the front, Emperor asked his name. “My name is Ling,” he replied. All the kids were laughing at him. The emperor asked everyone to quiet down. He then announced to the crowd, "Behold your new emperor! His name is Ling!” Ling couldn’t believe it. He couldn’t even grow his seed! Then the emperor said, “One year ago today, I actually gave you all boiled seeds which wouldn't grow. All of you, except Ling, have brought me plants because you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Ling was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it.” 听力录音稿 Text 1 M: I like drinking tea, but Max only has coffee and milk whenever we visit him. It’s Charles Darwin’s most famous work, and one of the most important contributions to science in human history. You’ll find it in the history section. I believe we still have one copy left. We’re definitely going to help, and her kids are excited to volunteer when they come home from college every vacation. M: Well, that’s great. Good luck with everything. Text 10 As an animal doctor, I meet many kinds of animals. You may think that an animal doctor mainly sees animals that are very sick or badly treated, but that is not always the case. People who bring their pets to see an animal doctor are usually animal lovers and care greatly for their pets. In fact, it is a pity we do not get to see more animals that are really in need of treatment. Of course, most animals that I often see are cats and dogs, with a few rabbits. I treat kangaroos and snakes at the local zoo sometimes. Perhaps my biggest and strangest challenge was treating a giraffe for neck problems. It is normally quite easy to fit something to an animal to stop it bending its neck. Obviously, for a giraffe this is a big problem. I tried various pieces of plastic and metal until I came up with a solution — a very long water pipe. My work also takes me to farms where I look after cows, sheep and so on. I think my job is very important and I like my job. 版权所有:()查看更多
