It is a gift that we offer because we must; to give it as the reward of virtue would be to set a price upon it, and those who do that have no friendship to give. If you choose your friends on the grounds that you are virtuous and want virtuous company, you are no nearer to true friendship than if you choose them for commercial reasons. Besides, who are you that you should be setting a price upon your friendship? It is enough for any man that he has the power of making friends, and he must leave it to that power to determine who his friends shall be. For, though you may choose the virtuous to be your friends, they may not choose you. It comes, like sleep, when you are not thinking about it; and you should be grateful, without any misgiving, when it comes. So no man who knows what friendship is will give up a friend because he turns out to be disreputable (声名狼藉的). His only reason for giving up a friend is that he has stopped caring for him; and, when that happens, he should blame himself for this poverty (缺乏) of affection, not the friend for having proved unworthy. We have our judgments and our punishments as part of the political mechanism that is forced upon us so that we may continue to live; but friendship is not friendship at all unless it teaches us that these are not part of our real life. It is only in the warmth of friendship that we see how cold a thing it is to judge and how stupid to take a pleasure in judging; for we recognize this warmth as a positive good, a richness in our natures, while the coldness that sets us judging is a poverty. There are men who cannot be friends except when they are under an illusion (幻觉) that their friends are perfect, and when the illusion passes there is an end of their friendship. But true friendship has no illusions, for it reaches to that part of a man’s nature that is beyond his imperfections, and in doing so it takes all of them for granted. A man is your friend, not because of his superiorities (优越), but because there is something open from your nature to his, a way that is closed between you and most men. —A. Clutton-Brock 58. What is the author’s attitude towards choosing friends on the grounds of their virtues? A. Concerned. B. Uncertain. C. Disapproving. D. Supportive. 59. According to the author, you may give up your friend only when he _____. A. becomes disreputable B. shows no care for you C. blames you for not caring about him D. does something bad and hurts your feelings 60. What can we infer from Paragraph 3? A. The political mechanism plays an important role in our life. B. Friendship teaches us to have a positive attitude towards life. C. Friendship can turn us to be kind-hearted people. D. We should not make a judgment about others. 61. According to the last paragraph, a man becomes your friend mainly because _____. A. he gives you the illusion of perfection B. he accepts your imperfections C. he holds an open attitude towards you D. he and you understand each other C To start a conversation about the secret to happiness, ABC News’ health editor Dr. Richard Besser hosted a Twitter chat Tuesday. Experts from the National Institutes of Health, Mayo Clinic, Harvard University and TEDMED, as well as clinicians and people from across the country, joined the one-hour discussion. There are countless ways to measure happiness. With research on the topic increasing, researchers have carried out surveys to study people’s sense of well-being. Angela Haupt, health and wellness editor for U.S. News and World Report, said, “Happiness indicators include life satisfaction, health and community engagement.” @toddkashdan added that, “despite problems with self-reports, there is no better way to measure happiness than focusing on personal thoughts and feelings.” While scientists try to find out what caused happiness, others often believe that true joy doesn’t exist. Dr Friedman, a psychiatrist at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Hospital, said that “happiness is hard to measure, but easy to recognize.” Still, common themes about satisfaction come up in these conversations. Finding meaning in daily work was important. Indeed, researchers have found that having creative and purposeful work to do is a key factor in happiness. But people were quick to state the importance of balancing work and family obligations. Chat participants(参与者) agreed that money does not surely bring happiness. And studies agree once people’s basic needs like food and housing are met, higher incomes do little to improve your happiness. At last, people found value in their connections with others. Research shows that having support through friends, family, and social networks can bring happiness. Many agree with @drmommy, who said “I measure my happiness by the loving people that are around me.” So, can we increase our happiness? Expressing gratitude(感激) is a possible way of feeling happiness. Researchers have found that people who regularly write down things for which they are grateful in “gratitude journals” have increased satisfaction in life, higher energy levels, and improved health. In one study, people who read a letter of appreciation to someone in their lives prove happier almost one month later. Performing acts of kindness can raise your moods Data show that our relationships matter, too. People who are interested in meaningful conversations with friends or family are reported to be happier than those who don’t. Close interpersonal ties and strong social support are important for happiness. 62. Dr Friedman may agree that ________. A. happiness can be measured by health B. happiness can never be measured C. it’s easy to see whether one is happy D. it’s hard to seek for happiness 63. It can be learnt that @drmommy measures his happiness by ________. A. health B. purposeful work C. meaningful work D. friends’ support 64. We can learn from the passage that money can affect your happiness if you are relatively______. A. poor B. sensitive C. unhealthy D. hopeless 65. What’s the main purpose of the passage? A. To introduce us the results of a chat B. To give us some advice on improving happiness C. To correct the misunderstanding of happiness D. To remind us to find the secret to happiness D Good day, everybody … Just two weeks ago I shared some of my thoughts about the green economy in an event organised by Sciences Po and Ecolo Ethik in Paris. Inevitably my main messages will be repeated, but I hope they will be still fresh for such a young and fresh audience. You are future policy makers, leaders and active members of our society. I believe that you have a very important role to play in shaping this world, your own future. On 7th June last year a scientific article in the journal Nature stated the following: “Today conditions are very different because global-scale forces including, but not limited to, climate change, have emerged as a direct result of human activities. Human population growth and per-capita consumption rate underlie all of the other present drivers for global change”. The world’s population is increasing by about 140.000 people per day. In just 30 years - one generation - 2 billion people more will share the planet, which is more than the total amount of the population on the planet at the beginning of the 20th Century. On top of that, in just over 15 years from now, there will be an additional 3 billion middle class consumers, which corresponds to twice the total population at the beginning of the previous century. Of course, this is great for those 3 billion whose living standards will rise, and for the businesses that will succeed in providing for those demands, but this will put great stress on many resources. We will need three times more resources -140 billion tons annually- by 2050. The demand for food, feed and fiber is projected to increase by 70%. To put it simply: the world has changed. We are more interconnected and interdependent than ever. Many challenges, like climate change, disappearing biodiversity, scarce resources (like water, land or oceans), potential pandemics, poverty, global security … can only be addressed if we join our forces. Looking to the future, the “business as usual” scenario simply will not work. Transition from our current resource intensive growth model to a resource efficient growth model is absolutely necessary. It is actually inevitable for all our economies. For the first time, we humans, are affecting the balance of our planet. For the past two centuries we have relied on an economic growth model based on cheap and abundant resources. This great acceleration has been a fantastic achievement of the generations of humans that have so successfully overcome so many obstacles to bring such unimagined health and prosperity. But we cannot go on growing in the resource-intensive way we did in the past; certainly not on a global scale. Today the richest 20% of the world consume about 60 times more than the poorest 20%. Just imagine the stress on the world’s resources if the rest of the world would live the same way as we do. 66. Which of the following statements about the speech is true according to the passage? A. It plays an important role in shaping young people’s future. B. It is repeated in the event organized by Sciences Po and Ecolo Ethik. C. It’ll hopefully make a difference to our green economy. D. It is the second time it has been given about the green economy. 67. Which of the following is the direct contributor to global change? A. human population growth B. scarce resources C. human activities D. financial and economic crisis 68. The writer uses many figures in the passages four and five in order to ______. Now generally this is something we can all agree on, and it only makes sense that the way we think will affect the way we act and finally the outcome of our lives. While it might sound like magic to say that our beliefs can shape our reality, it actually makes much sense when we think about it. The point is that all of our actions are dictated (命令) by our thoughts and all the outcomes we face are as a result of our actions. By dealing with our beliefs we essentially change what we’re putting out into the world and this of course will change what comes back to us. This phenomenon is called the self-fulfilling prophecy (预言), which shows how simply believing something can make it come true. For example, let’s say that you really believe you’re successful. Then, you’ll speak much more confidently in business meetings and presentations. Suddenly people will sit up and take notice of you because you look and act like you’re successful, and this will make them believe you’re more competent (有能力的). Then, just like that, you’ll find people start to trust you more and that they want to promote you. Likewise if someone is sure that they’re going to have a bad day, then that too can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. You’ve probably been on nights out with people like that — people who don’t really want to be there. These people sap (逐渐削弱) all the joy out of everything. They won’t smile so no one talks to them; they won’t dance so they can’t forget their worries and they focus on all the negative things that happen. In such a situation they’ve created that unpleasant evening as a result of their thought processes. Being aware of self-fulfilling prophecies however is all it takes to start using them effectively, and by changing your beliefs to more positive ones, you can start to make real positive changes in your life. For instance, try to repeat some positive statements over and over until they become habitual. Saying things like “I’m highly talented” regularly will get you to the point where you think that without consciously trying to, and at that point you might start to believe it. On the other hand, you should think about the language you use when you’re talking to others. For example, if you say “don’t fall over” to a child, you are drawing attention to the fact that he might fall over and this then causes him to trip. Instead say “be careful” and you’ll have more positive results. The self-fulfilling prophecy Introduction It is a must to realize the (81) _____ between our thoughts and our actions, which can help to get our goals achieved. According to the Cyberbullying Research Center, almost half of all young people have been bullied online. Cyberbullying is a form in which people harm other people online deliberately. And unlike the traditional bully, the electronic bully can remain anonymous, so we often don’t know who they are. Cyberbullying includes things like spreading lies and rumors online, sending or forwarding unpleasant message via instant messaging, text or on social networks. It’s becoming very common among teenagers these days. They are campaigns against cyberbullying and some places have adopted laws to prevent it. Kate is a victim of cyberbully. The descriptions presented above are typical examples. Quite a few factors give rise to the hot issue. To begin with, many media online expose children to negative information, especially concerning violence, which will be rooted in children’s heart and mislead them to bullying. Besides, inadequate parental education should also be responsible for their children’s ignorance of laws and indifference to others’ feelings. They will end up appealing to more simple but rude ways to serve their purpose. As a consequence, not only does it endanger children’s physical condition but also causes many mental problems. From my point of view, there is no simple solution to cyberbullying. Most important of all is proper guidance and monitoring as well as moral education from both schools and parents. That finding comes from the Sustainable Development Solutions Network survey in March 26, 2016. The World Happiness Report found that Americans showed “significant decreases” in happiness from 2005-2007 and again from 2013-2015. The U.S. ranked as the 13th happiest country in the 2016 survey. The report showed that 45 nations showed a decline in happiness during the past 10 years. Burundi was at the lowest spot in the rankings of more than 150 nations. The happiest country in the world was Denmark, according to the report. The top 10 countries also included Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Canada, Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden. Mexico was ranked 21st and Britain was 23rd. France was in the 32nd position, and Japan was ranked 53rd. Greece had the largest drop in the survey. Researchers blamed the drop on the debt crisis in the country. In 2014, the PewResearchCenter carried out a life satisfaction survey. In that survey, a top conclusion was that richer countries were happier than poor countries. The Pew research said Asians and Africans are the most optimistic people about their futures. Money was a big factor driving happiness, but it was not the most important according to the Pew organization. The majority of those asked thought good health, quality education for their children and safety from crime were more important than wealth.查看更多
