When he was 19, he built a model airplane with a real working engine that won first prize at the South Dakota State Fair. ‎ That was an especially sweet moment. Dave’s big brother George Merry, who’d helped him build his first plane and taught him everything about tools, had died four years before. ‎ Maintaining the connection to his tools was a way for Dave to keep his brother’s memory alive. ‎ And the tools built new memories too. They helped Dave, now 80, repair his home in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he and his wife, Annette Merry, lived for 46 years and raised three children. The tools were placed in his carefully organized workshop. “I had a whole set-up, and it was beautiful,” says Dave. ‎ But then Annette suffered a disease that left her relying on a walker to get around and the Merrys decided to move into assisted living. Dave’s workshop was obviously a minor consideration given Annette’s condition, but the family knew that giving it up, on top of everything else, would hurt. ‎ It was one of the Merrys’ friends who came up with a possible solution. He’d heard about some people who were setting up a tool library. Might Dave be interested in donating his? ‎ ‎“I said yes,” Dave says. ‎ The people creating the St. Paul Tool Library were thrilled. They had expected it would take a year to collect enough tools. Instead it took one day: the day Dave donated his. ‎ Members of the library pay an annual fee (from $20 to $120) for unlimited tool use and a varying number of visits to the workshop. And they get an extra benefit: Dave Merry. Dave comes as often as he can to offer his knowledge to aspiring(有抱负的) woodworks and space-challenged DIYers. “It means a lot to me to be able to go and use my tools,” he says. “But it means just as much to help somebody else use the tools properly.” 2l. How does Dave sound when talking about his tools? ‎ ‎ A. Patient B. Painful ‎ ‎ C. Regretful D. Proud ‎ 22. Why did the Merrys move into assisted living? ‎ A. Annette was out of work. B. Their house was destroyed. ‎ ‎ C. Annette couldn’t walk by herself. D. Their workshop couldn’t turn a profit. ‎ 23. What can be inferred about the St. Paul Tool Library? A. It was founded by Dave. ‎ B. It offers visitors DIY courses. ‎ C. It allows Dave to connect to his tools. ‎ D. It allows people to use the tools for free. ‎ ‎ ‎ B ‎ Tim Ma’s parents came to the United States from Taiwan in the 1970s. They opened a restaurant. It was not a success. They found success in America, however, in computers and engineering. Because of their own experiences, Ma’s parents hoped he would study to become an engineer or doctor. They wanted financial security for their child. ‎ ‎ Growing up, Ma considered many professions — writer, fireman, and even president. But he had a sense early on... “I didn’t want to be an engineer.” However, Ma did well in math and science classes in high school and he ended up choosing to study electrical engineering in college. ‎ ‎ Several engineering jobs later, though, Ma had a change of heart. He wanted to leave the engineering world behind and enter the restaurant business. It was in his blood. After all, his parents had owned a Chinese restaurant in Arkansas. His uncle also owned one in New York. ‎ ‎ His parents, Ma says, could not understand why he would want to leave such a good job to open a restaurant. They had worked long hours but their own restaurant still failed. They kept asking, “Why?” ‎ ‎ But Ma remained certain. He was going to do things differently than his parents. He was able to learn from their one major mistake as restaurant owners — they knew very little about the art of cooking. So, at age 30, Ma left engineering and returned to school — cooking school. Ma soon learned that he enjoyed cooking. In 2009, Ma opened his first restaurant in Virginia. It is called Maple Avenue. At Maple Avenue, Ma cooked, cleaned the ovens, fixed equipment and paid bills. He worked long hours, seven days a week. His long hours paid off. Ma opened his fourth restaurant last year, Kyirisan in Washington, D.C. ‎ ‎ Kyirisan’s success is due to the creative menu and food, Ma says. But mostly it just comes from completely hard work. “I think in this country you can create your own success, just by working hard. Not because you’re smarter than anybody, not because you’re more creative than anybody, just by working hard. And I think that’s why a lot of people end up coming to ‎ America.” ‎ 24. Why did Ma’s parents want him to become an engineer or doctor? A. They were tired of running a restaurant. ‎ B. They wanted him to try a career different from theirs. ‎ C. They thought it financially secure to be an engineer or doctor. ‎ D. Their family had found success in engineering for generations. ‎ 25. Why do a lot of people come to America? ‎ A. They can learn a lot. B. They can run their business creatively. ‎ ‎ C. They can choose jobs at will. D. They can succeed through hard work. ‎ 26. What can be the best title for the text? ‎ A. A suitable job B. A successful business ‎ ‎ C. Follow your heart D. Create your own business ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ C ‎ Emily couldn’t wait for her birthday party. She was turning 12. The cake would be chocolate. The music was going to be from Hamilton. All her best friends were coming. ‎ ‎ But there was one thing that Emily refused to invite to her party: helium(氦)balloons. The first floating balloons were filled with a gas called hydrogen(氢). But hydrogen can catch on fire and nobody wants their balloons to burst into flames in the middle of a party. So people started filling balloons with helium, a safer gas. ‎ ‎ But helium is actually a rare natural gas. And it has many important uses — more important than making birthday party balloons float. Helium powers medical equipment. It is also used in research and experiments. It even helps send rockets into space. To many experts and Emily, it’s wrong to waste an important resource on something silly like balloons. And there’s another problem with helium balloons — people let go of them and watch them float into the clouds. But those balloons come back down to earth. When they do, they can be dangerous to animals. Animals can mistake the balloons for meals. Dead whales and sea turtles have been found with pieces of balloon in their stomachs. ‎ ‎ Not everyone agrees that helium balloons should be banned. Only 5 to 7 percent of all helium is used in balloons. And there may be an easier way to protect animals: Keep your balloons inside, and don’t let them fly away. Emily still chose to go helium-free on her birthday. Her friends were disappointed until Emily explained the reasons for her balloon ban. Then they got to eat chocolate cake and celebrate with her happily. ‎ 27. Why did Emily refuse to use helium balloons on her birthday? A. They were not safe. ‎ B. They were expensive. ‎ C. Her friends didn’t like them. ‎ D. She didn’t want to waste resources. ‎ 28. How may helium balloons influence animals according to the text? A. They are eaten as food. ‎ B. They frighten animals away. ‎ C. Their lines may trap animals. ‎ D. Their waste takes up animals’ habitat. ‎ 29. How did Emily’s friends react to her choice finally? A. They spoke highly of it. ‎ B. They didn’t care about it. ‎ C. They were disappointed by it. ‎ D. They showed understanding of it. ‎ 30. What is the best title for the text? A. How to celebrate a birthday? ‎ B. How to use helium balloons? ‎ C. Should we ban helium balloons? ‎ D. Should we protect animals? ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 ‎ Simple Ways to Build Trust ‎ The most valuable thing you can have is trust. When there is no trust, it becomes hard to get anything done. 31 Then think of another one with very little trust. ‎ Which one do you prefer? ‎ We can all be better off with more trust in our lives. And I’m going to show you a few things you can do to build trust. ‎ Be honest. Honesty is the basis of any relationship. Be true to your word and keep your promises. Share honest information, even if it’s to your disadvantage. ‎ Ask open-ended questions. 32 Open-ended questions give your friends chances to tell you about themselves. Ask more questions based on the answers that you get. ‎ Don’t be perfect. There is always something fishy(可疑的) about someone who seems to have everything going for them. 33 This sends a message that you’re not hiding anything and that you want to build trust. ‎ Say what you mean. 34 When you build up a reputation of saying what you mean, people don’t have to second-guess what you’re trying to say. This helps you win trust. ‎ Don’t blame others. 35 Be brave to take responsibility and then decide what you’re going to do next. Don’t waste the present thinking about the past which can’t be changed. A person that doesn’t blame gets the trust of others quickly. A. If you think it’s a bad idea, say so. ‎ B. However, there are ways to solve the problems. Life is too short to waste. How a person approaches the family members and what he says can make a big difference. ‎ If the family members are arguing, waiting until everyone calms down can help deal with the argument. A person shouldn’t discuss the family problem when he is still feeling upset or emotional. If he waits even a single night, the intensity(强度) of the emotion is likely to calm down somewhat, even if he is still unhappy. So it is advised that he should wait rather than react emotionally. If he takes a step back and gives himself some time to think before dealing with the problem, he will deal with it wisely. ‎ There are lots of people who want to send off a text or an email and wish they could take things back. Actually, the tone(语气) can be easily misunderstood by electronic communication. The man who sends off a text message or email might not think he sounds angry to the person ‎ receiving it. Instead of sending off a text, pick up the telephone, or better yet, arrange in-person communication. Electronic communication means people lose the true meaning of body language, which can convey feelings and reduce the sting(刺痛) of a painful conversation. ‎ As the saying goes, “Blood is thicker than water.” People can choose their friends, but not their family. You might be able to cut family members out, but it could cause you more pain down ‎ the road. Understanding that family members have faults, but they can still love their families, is the first step towards dealing with problems. Accept your own faults, too. ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________________ ‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________________ ‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________________ ‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________________ ‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________________ ‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________________ ‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________________ ‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________________ ‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ ‎ 浙东北联盟(ZDB)2019-2020学年第一学期期中考试 ‎ 高二英语答案 ‎ 第一部分:听力(共 20 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分) ‎ ‎1—5 CBCAB 6—10 ABCBA 11—15 CCACB 第二部分:阅读理解 ‎ 第一节:(共 10 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 25 分) ‎ ‎21—23 DCC 24—26 CDC 27—30 DADC ‎ 第二节:(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) ‎ ‎31—35 EFDAB ‎ 第三部分:语言运用 ‎ 第一节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,共30分) ‎ ‎16—20 ABCBB ‎ ‎36—40 CBADA 41—45 BCACD 46—50 CDDAB 第二节:(共10题;每小题1.5分,满分15分) ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎51—55 DCABB ‎ ‎56. happiest 57. closely 58. which 59. using ‎ ‎ 60. be found ‎ ‎61. honesty 62. but 63. faced 64. to ‎ ‎ 65. has gone ‎ 第四部分:写作第一节:应用文写作(满分15分) ‎ Dear Sir / Madam, ‎ I’m a student from Class 5. When shall I return the bike? ‎ M: It has to be returned before dark as there isn’t any light on it. It usually gets dark by 6:30 at this time of year so you have to get it back by 6:00 pm. People usually give it back at 5:30 or so. ‎ ‎(Text 7) ‎ W: Excuse me, I think I’m the next. ‎ M: Yes, madam. How can I help you? ‎ W: It’s the sweater. I bought it two weeks ago. It was guaranteed not to shrink, but look at it. It has shrunk already and the size is smaller than I bought. Obviously, it is not worth its high price. ‎ M: That’s very strange. We have been selling this particular make for years and we haven’t had any complaints in all that time. Did you wash it in hot water? ‎ W: No, I followed the instructions exactly. ‎ M: In that case, you can choose any other products of the same price. ‎ W: Well, I’d rather have my money back. ‎ M: I see. It’s not our normal practice, but I suppose we can arrange that. ‎ ‎(Text 8) ‎ M: Hi, Elena, you look tired. ‎ W: Hi, Adam, I am just worn out. I worked around the clock to have my papers set yesterday. You know, I often have a problem with meeting deadlines. ‎ M: Do you want to feel less stressed? ‎ W: Of course, but how? Watch movies or go shopping? ‎ M: They may work but believe it or not, there is one thing that can help you do all of this. W: What is it? ‎ M: It’s regular physical activity. You can make your personal fitness plan. ‎ W: I don’t really have time. ‎ M: No time? People always say that, but you know, you can try shorter periods of activity throughout the day such as walking 3 times a day for 10 minutes each time or running for 30 minutes a time every other day. ‎ W: It sounds great. I will give it a try. ‎ ‎(Text 9) ‎ M: Let’s look at your problem: you always fail the job interviews. ‎ W: It seems so, sir. I always find those questions hard to answer. For example, they always ask me what I think is important in a job. ‎ M: Well, you should mention specific rewards other than salary or welfare, for example, challenge and the feeling of accomplishment. ‎ W: That sounds good. And they often ask why I decide to join their small and young company. ‎ M: Apparently, to have more opportunities with an expanding company. ‎ W: Great, I think the toughest question is what my strengths and weaknesses are. ‎ M: You can give a response like this: “I work well with others.” W: Terrific. ‎ M: For your weakness, you can say that you tend to push yourself too hard. The trick is to describe a weakness so that it can also be considered as an advantage. ‎ W: I see. Sometimes they also ask me what I dislike about my previous job. ‎ M: You can talk about the things you don’t like, but avoid making even slightest reference to any of your former employers. And never forget to prepare at least one question about the company. ‎ W: I’ll remember that. I understand employers like a candidate who is interested in the organization. ‎ ‎(Text 10) ‎ As an international student coming from South Africa, I’m honored to give these opening remarks and welcome you all to Sydney University.
